2 Introduction 7 Important cautions Installation of the system • Select a plac e which is le vel, dr y and neither too hot nor too cold; between 5°C and 35°C. • Leav e suff icient distance be tween the system and t he TV . • Do not use the system in a place su bject to vibration.
3 About discs This system has been designed to play back the following d iscs: D VD V IDEO, V ideo CD (VCD), Super V ideo CD (SVCD), Audio CD (CD), CD-R and CD-R W . • This system accommodates the P A L system, and also can play discs recorded with NTSC system.
About discs 4 For all playable files • The system can only recognize and play f iles with one of the following e xtensions, which can be in any combination of upper and lo wer case; MP3: “.MP3”, “.mp3” JPEG: “.JPG”, “.JP EG”, “.jpg”, “.

Index of parts and controls 6 Remote control Putting batteries in the remote control If the range or effecti ven ess of the remote control decre ases, replace both batteries. CAUTION • Do not expose batteries to heat or flame. Operating the system from the remote control Aim the remote contro l directly to the front panel of the center unit.
7 Connections 7 AM (MW) loop antenna Setting up su pplied AM (MW) lo op antenna Connecting AM ( MW) loop antenna • T urn the loop antenna un til you ha ve the best reception during AM (MW) broadcast program reception. NOTE • Make sure the antenna conductors do not touch any other terminals, connecting cords and power cords.
Connections 8 7 Assembling the front speakers for TH-S33 Before assembling — Prepare a Phillips screwdri ver (not supplied). • T ake care not to drop any component part while assembling; otherwise, it may ca use damage to the floor or injury .
9 7 Connecting speakers for T H-S33 • When you connect speakers other than the supplied ones, use speakers of the same speaker impedance (SPEAKER IMPED ANCE) indicated on the rear of the center unit. • DO NO T connect more than one speaker to one speaker terminal.

Connections • Place the satellite speakers on a flat and level surface. • The front and center speakers are magnetically shielded to avoid color distortions on TVs. However, if not installed properly, they may cause color distortions. So, pay at tention to the following when installing the speakers.
Operating the TV 7 To operate a JVC’s TV Y ou can use the remote control to op erate not only this unit b ut also JVC’ s TV . • Refer also to the manuals supplied for the TV . • T o operate the TV , aim the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the TV .
13 Basic operations On the remote control: Press STANDBY/ON . On the center unit: Press . When DVD is selected as the source (see page 14), the following messages will appear on the TV screen. NOTE • The STANDBY lamp goes off w hen the power is turned on, and the lamp lights when the power is turned off.
Basic operations 14 On the remote contro l: Press one of the source selecting buttons (DVD/CD 3 , FM/AM or TV SOUND). D VD/CD 3 : T o play back a disc (DVD VIDEO, VCD etc.). (See page 16.) FM/AM : T o tune in an FM or AM (MW) station. (See page 34.) Each time you press the butto n, the band alternates between FM and AM (MW).
Basic operations 15 The system turns off automatica ll y when the specified period of time has passed. Press SLEEP, with SHIFT pressed. Each time you repeat th e procedure, the s hut-off time changes. Example: To check the remaining time Press SLEEP , wit h SHIFT pressed once.
16 Playback • The mark shows the types of discs the operation is available for . 1 Press 0 on the center unit. • The system turns on and the disc tray comes out. 2 Place a disc. 3 Press DVD/CD 3 (play button). For MP3 The file control display (see page 24) appears on the TV screen.

Playback 18 When a DivX file is played. • You can change the time inform ation mode (except for MP3/JPEG/ DivX). (See page 22.) • You can also check the playback in formation on the TV screen. (S ee page 21.) Screen saver A TV screen may burn out if a sta tic picture is displayed for a long time.
Playback 19 7 During playback or while stopped. Press TITLE/GROUP. “_ _” or “_” is shown in the title/group display area in the display window . Example: During DVD VIDEO playback 2 While the display windo w shows “_ _” or “_”, use number bu ttons (0-10, +10) to enter the desir ed title or group number.
20 Advanced operations • The mark shows the types of discs the operation is available for . 7 Auto Surround (AUTO SURR) This function automatically sele cts the appropriate surround mode according to the input signals. Fo r example, a multich annel source is automatically reproduc ed in multichannel audio.
Advanced operations 21 7 All Channel Stereo All Channel S tereo (ALL ST) mode can reprodu ce a lar ger stereo sound fi eld using all the connect ed (and acti v ated) speakers.

Advanced operations 23 Y ou can start playing a title, chapter or track you specify . Y ou can also play a disc from specif ied time. Locating a desired sc ene from the DVD menu D VD VIDEOs generally hav e their o wn menus which show disc contents and you can di splay them on the TV screen.
Advanced operations 24 Locating a desired po sition by specifying the time Y ou can locate a desi red position by specif ying the time from the beginning the disc (while stopped) or the current title/track (during playback).
25 7 For MP3: During playback or while stopped For JPEG/DivX: While stopped Press Cursor 3 / 2 / Y / 5 to select the desired group/track/file. • For MP3, playback starts from the selected track. • For JPEG, proceed to perfo rm the follow ing operation.
26 7 During playback of a disc containing subtitles in several languages When using the SUBTITLE button: 1 Press SUBTITLE. Example (DVD VIDEO): “ENGLISH” is selected out of 3 subtitle languages recorded. 2 Press Cursor Y / 5 to select the desired subtitle.
27 Frame-by-frame playback During playback 8 repeatedly. Each time you press th e button, the still picture advances b y one frame. To return to normal playback Press D VD/CD 3 . Playing back in slow-motion 7 During playback 1 Press 8 at the point where you want to start playback in slow-motion from.
Advanced operations 28 4 ENTER. Example: 5 Press Cursor Y / 5 to change the setting. 6 Press ENTER. The current VFP settings appe ar again. 7 Repeat steps 3 to 6 to adjust other parameters. 8 Press VFP. NOTE • Although the setting display di sappears in the middle o f the procedure, the setting at that time will be stored.

When using the on-screen bar: 1 ON SCREEN twice. 2 Press Cursor / 2 to highlight . Press ENTER. 4 Press Cursor Y / 5 repeatedly to select “A-B”. 5 Press ENTER at t he beginning of the part you want to repeat (point A). 6 Press ENTER at the end of the part you want to repeat (point B).

Setting DVD preferences 32 : P icture menu (PICTURE) 7 MONITOR TYPE Y ou can select the monitor type to match your TV when yo u play D VDs recorded in the picture’ s height/width ratio of 16:9. • 16:9 (Wide television con versio n) Select this when th e aspect ratio of your TV is 16:9 (wide TV).
Setting DVD preferences 33 7 Delay menu (DEL A Y) Example: In this case, set the delay ti me of each speaker as follows; • Delay time of front speak ers: 0 ms • Delay time of cente r speaker: 1 ms.
34 T uner operations 1 Press FM/AM repeatedly to select the band. Example: When the system is tuned in to 810 kHz. 2 Press TUNING 9 / ( repeatedly until you find the frequency you want.
Tuner operations 35 When the stereo FM program currently tuned in is noisy , you can change the FM reception mode to impro ve the reception. 7 While listening to an FM station Press FM MODE. The FM reception mode appears on the display windo w . Each time you press the button, th e FM reception mode changes.
T uner operations 36 Searching for a program by PTY codes One of the adva ntages of the RDS service is that you can locate a particular kind of program from the preset channels (see page 34) by specifying the PTY codes.

38 References 7 Handling Discs • Remov e the disc from its case by holding it at the edge while pressing the center hole lightly . • Do not touch the shiny surface o f the disc or bend the disc. • Put the disc back in its case after use to prev ent warping.
