7 Getting Star ted This section explains how to connect audio/video components and speakers to the receiver , and how to connect the power supply . Before Installation General • Be sure your hands are dry . • T urn the power of f on all components.
8 AM (MW/LW) Antenna Connections Connecting the Speakers For full enjoyment of the THX modes (see page 45), it is recommended to use THX-certif ied speakers. Y ou can connect the following speakers: • T wo pairs of front speakers to produce normal stereo sound.
9 Note: Ideal speaker la yout requires that all speak ers be placed at the same distance from the listener . Howe ver , since in some places it may be difficult to fulfil this requirement, this unit can adjust the delay time so that the sounds through all the speak ers reach the listener with the same timing.
10 Enhance your audio system Y ou can use this receiver as the pre-amplif ier (control amplifier) when you connect power amplif iers to the PREOUT jacks on the rear panel, using cables with RCA pin plugs (not supplied). • Connect the white plug to the audio left jack, and the red plug to the audio right jack.

16 Digital Connections This receiv er is equipped with six DIGIT AL IN terminals — three digital coaxial terminals and three digital optical terminals — and one DIGIT AL OUT (optical) terminal on the rear . • Another digital optical input terminal is located on the front panel (see page 12).
17 Putting Batteries in the Remote Control Before using the remote control, insert the two supplied batteries first. 1. On the back of the remote control, r emove the battery cov er . 2. Insert the batteries. • Make sure to match the polarity: (+) to (+) and ( – ) to ( – ).
18 Basic Operations This section explains only the operations commonly used when you play any sound source. • Before performing basic operations, it is recommended to finish the basic settings on pages 29 to 38. IMPORT ANT : • When using the unit: Press DOOR DOWN to use the buttons inside the front door .
19 T ur ning the Power On and Off (Standby) On the unit: T o turn on the power , press (ST ANDBY/ON). The ST ANDBY lamp goes of f, and the front door moves do wn (so that the source selecting buttons a ppear). The currently selected speakers 1 and/or 2 indicator(s) also light(s) up on the display .
20 Speaker and signal indicators on the display By checking the following indicators, you can easily conf irm which speakers you are acti vating and which signals are coming into this receiv er from the source.
21 Adjusting the V olume On the unit: T o increase the v olume, turn MASTER V OLUME clockwise. T o decr ease the volume, turn it counterclockwise. • When you turn MASTER VOLUME rapidly , the volume le vel also chang es r apidly . • When you turn MASTER V OLUME slowly , the volume le vel also changes slo wly .
22 2. Press INPUT MODE (or AN ALOG/DIGIT AL INPUT) to change the input mode. • Each time you press the button, the input mode c hanges as follo ws: DIGIT AL A UTO : Select this for the digital input mode. The recei ver automatically detects the incoming signals.
23 Muting the Sound Fr om the remote control ONL Y : Press MUTING to m ute the sound thr ough all speakers and headphones connected. “ MUTING ” appears on the display and the volume turns off (the VOLUME level indicator goes of f). T o restor e the sound, press MUTING again so that “ MUTING OFF ” appears on the display for a while.
24 Recording a Sour ce For analog-to-analog r ecording Y ou can record any analog source through the receiv er to — • the cassette deck (or MD recorder) connected to the T APE/ MD OUT jacks, • the VCRs connected to the VCR 1 OUT and VCR 2 OUT jacks, and • the CD recorder connected to the CDR OUT jacks — at the same time.
25 Receiving Radio Br oadcasts Y ou can browse through all the stations or use the preset function to go immediately to a par ticular station. T uning in to Stations Manually On the unit ONL Y : 1. Press FM/AM. The last recei ved station of the last selected band is tuned in.

27 Fr om the remote control ONL Y : 1. Press PTY SEARCH while listening to an FM station. “ PTY SELECT ” flashes on the display . 2. Press PTY 9 or PTY ( until the PTY code you want appears on the display , while “ PTY SELECT ” is flashing.
28 Switching to a Program of Y our Choice Automatically Another con venient RDS service is called “ Enhanced Other Networks. ” This allo ws the receiver to switch temporarily to a broadcast progra.
29 Basic Settings Some of the following settings are required after connecting and positioning your speakers, while others will make operations easier . Note: When perf or ming the basic settings viewing the indications on the main unit’ s display , the indications are slightly different from what are shown on the on-screen displa y .
30 Operation through On-Scr een Display Menus T o do the basic settings for this receiv er, you can utilize the on- screen display menus in order to finish impor tant settings easily while viewing these menus.

32 1 Setting the Speakers—SPEAKER SETTING T o obtain the best possible surround sound of the Surround/ THX/DSP modes in, you hav e to register the information a bout the speaker arrangement after all connections are completed. 7 SUBWOOFER Register whether you ha ve connected a subwoofer .
33 7 TEST TONE Y ou can emit the test tone to adjust the speaker output lev el. CA UTION: The test tone is automatically fixed to 0 dB, but this level will be louder than you would expect. Select one of the follo wing. • The test tone will be heard for about three seconds after you select “ AU T O ” or “ MANUAL.
34 4 Setting the Bass Sounds — SUBWOOFER On this submenu, you can adjust subwoofer and bass sounds precisely according to your preference. 7 SUBWFR OUT Y ou can select the type of the signal which can be transmitted through the subwoofer .
35 5 Setting the THX Audio — THX AUDIO SETUP These settings are required to obtain the optimum effect from the THX modes. Note: When “ SUBW OOFER ” is set to “ NO ” on the SPEAKER SETTING su.
36 7 DUAL MONO Select the playback sounds (channel). MAIN : Select to play back the main channel (Ch1).* 1 Signal indicator “ L ” lights up while playing back this channel. SUB : Select to play back the sub-channel (Ch2).* 1 Signal indicator “ R ” lights up while playing back this channel.

38 t Memorizing the V olume Level for Each Source — ONE TOUCH OPE This unit memorizes many settings separately for each source (see page 24). In addition, you can store the volume le vel for each source together with the other memorized settings.
39 Sound Adjustments Sound adjustment operations are easily done on the Adjustment menu. Some of the adjustments can also be done directly using the buttons on the remote control.

44 • When Dolby Pr o Logic II Music is activated: Select and adjust the follo wing items: CENTER EQ: In mo vie theaters, the screen works as the high- frequency cut f ilter of the center channel since the center speakers are located behind the screen and the center channel sounds hav e to pass through the screen.
45 Using the Sur r ound and THX Modes This unit activates a variety of Surround and THX modes automatically . The stor ed basic settings and adjustments performed on the Setup and Adjustment Menus (see pages 29 to 44) are applied.
46 Dolby Digital EX Dolby Digital EX (DOLBY D EX) is a ne w digital surround encoding format that adds the third surround channels, called “ surround back. ” Compared to the con ventional Dolby Digital 5.1CH, the ne wly added surround back channel can reproduce more detailed mov ements behind you while viewing the video softw are.

49 Activating the Surr ound and THX Modes Perform the basic settings and adjustments using the Setup and Adjustment Menus first (see pages 29 to 44 ). Activa ting the Surround mode and the THX mode f or a source automatically recalls the memorized settings and adjustments.

54 Using the Analog Multi-channel Playback Mode This receiver provides the DVD MUL TI and EXT 7.1CH playback modes for reproducing the analog discrete output mode of the DVD player or another component such as a digital decoder . Before using these playback modes, refer also to the manual supplied for those components.
55 COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The COMPU LINK remote control system allows you to operate JVC audio components through this receiver . T o use this remote control system, you need to connect JVC audio components through the COMPU LINK (SYNCHR O) jacks (see belo w) in addition to the connections using cables with RCA pin plugs (see page 11).
56 TEXT COMPU LINK Remote Contr ol System The TEXT COMPU LINK remote control system has been developed to deal with the disc information recorded in the CD T ext * and MDs. Using this information in the discs, you can operate the CD player or MD recorder with the TEXT COMPU LINK remote control system through the receiver .
57 OPERA TIONS T o use this remote control system, you need to connect the TV to the MONITOR OUT jack (see page 14), and set the TV ’ s input mode to the proper position to which the recei ver is connected. Make sur e you ha ve connected the CD player or MD recorder equipped with the TEXT COMPU LINK r emote control system.
