5 Getting star ted Putting batteries in the remote control Before using the remote control, put tw o supplied batter ies first. • When using the remote control, aim the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the front panel. 1 Press and slide the battery cover on the bac k of the remote contr ol.

17 Setting the speakers and subwoofer information quickly—Quick Setup Entering the use of the subwoofer , the number of the speakers , and your room siz e, the center and surround speakers’ delay time is automatically calculated. • When you change your speakers, register the information about the speakers again.

23 Setting the subwoofer audio position When a stereo source is pla yed back, the subwoof er sound is reinf orced compared to the sound from a multi-channel source. Once you ha ve set the subwoof er audio position, the subwoof er output lev el is decreased by the selected v alue when a stereo source is play ed back.
24 RX-ES1SL T uner operations The buttons on the remote control are mainly used f or tuner operations. T o use buttons on the remote control, press FM/AM before operation. When operating this receiver using the remote contr ol, alwa ys set the mode selector to AUDIO/TV/VCR/DBS.

27 Creating realistic sound fields DTS ** DTS is another digital signal compression method, developed by Digital Theater Systems, Inc., and enab les multi-channel encoding and decoding. DTS Digital Surround is another discrete 5.1 channel digital audio format available on CD, LD, and DVD software.
28 About relations between speaker layout and Surround/DSP modes A vailable Surround/DSP modes will v ar y depending on how man y speakers are used with this receiv er . Make sure that y ou have set the speakers information correctl y (see pages 16 to 19).
29 Creating realistic sound fields 3 Press TEST to check the speakers output balance. “ TEST L ” starts flashing on the display , and a test tone comes out of the speakers as f ollows: 4 Adjust the f ollowing speaker output levels (from –10 dB to +10 dB).
30 Using DSP modes Once you hav e adjusted the DSP modes, the adjustment is memorized for each source. • Y ou cannot use the DSP modes if no surround speakers are connected. • Y ou cannot adjust the effect le vel for “ ALL CH ST . ” When operating this receiver using the remote control, alwa ys set the mode selector to A UDIO/TV/VCR/DBS.
31 4 Adjust the surround speaker output le vels (from –10 dB to +10 dB). • Make adjustments so that the sound le vel of the selected speaker is set at the same level as that of the front speakers. T o adjust the left surround speaker level, press SURR L +/ – .
32 RX-ES1SL Using the D VD MUL TI pla ybac k mode This receiv er provides the D VD MUL TI playback mode f or reproducing the analog discrete output mode (5.1 channel reproduction) of the D VD play er. In addition, the D VD MUL TI playbac k mode can be used for reproducing a D VD Audio sound.
