3 ENGLISH Note: F or security r easons, a number ed ID car d is pr ovided with this unit, and the same ID number is imprinted on the unit ’ s chassis. K eep the car d in a safe place, as it will help the authorities to identify your unit if stolen. OTHER MAIN FUNCTIONS .
4 ENGLISH BASIC OPERA TIONS 1 T urn on the power . 2 Select the source. T o operate the tuner , see pages 5 – 16. T o operate the cassette deck, see pages 17 – 20. T o operate the CD changer , see pages 34 – 36. T o operate the external component, see page 37.
5 ENGLISH RADIO BASIC OPERA TIONS Listening to the radio 1 Select the band (FM1, FM2, FM3 or AM). Y ou can select any one of FM1, FM2, and FM3 to listen to an FM station.
6 ENGLISH 1 Select the FM band number (FM1, FM2 or FM3) you want to store FM stations into. 2 Press and hold both buttons for more than 2 seconds. Local FM stations with the strongest signals are searched and stored automatically in the band number y ou hav e selected (FM1, FM2 or FM3).
7 ENGLISH 1 Select the FM1 band. 2 T une into a station of 88.3 MHz. See page 5 to tune into a station. 3 Press and hold the number b utton (in this e xample, 1) f or more than 2 seconds . 4 Repeat the abov e procedure to store other stations into other preset numbers .
8 ENGLISH T uning into a pr eset station Y ou can easily tune into a preset station. Remember that you m ust store stations first. If you ha v e not stored them yet, see pages 6 and 7. 1 Select the band (FM1, FM2, FM3 or AM) you w ant. 2 Select the number (1 – 6) f or the preset station you w ant.
9 ENGLISH What y ou can do with RDS EON RDS OPERA TIONS RDS (Radio Data System) allows FM stations to send an additional signal along with their regular programme signals . F or example , the stations send their station names, as well as inf or mation about what type of programme the y broadcast, such as spor ts or music, etc.
10 ENGLISH Mode 1 The AF indicator lights up but the REG indicator does not. Network-T racking is activ ated with Regionalization set to “ off . ” Switches to another station within the same network when the receiving signals from the current station become weak.
11 ENGLISH Using Standby Reception Standby Reception allo ws the unit to switch tempor arily to your f av or ite progr amme (PTY : Programme T ype) and T r affic Announcement (T A) from the current source (another FM station, tape, CD and other connected components).
12 ENGLISH Selecting Y our Favorite Pr ogramme for PTY Standby Reception Y ou can select your f av orite programme f or PTY Standby Reception to store in memory . When shipped from the f actor y , “ NEWS ” is stored as the programme type f or PTY Standby Reception.
13 ENGLISH T o store your favorite programme types 1 Press and hold SEL (select) f or more than 2 seconds to call up the Pref erred Setting Mode (PSM: see page 26). 2 Select “ PTY SRCH (search) ” if not shown on the displa y . 3 Select one of twenty-nine PTY codes .
14 ENGLISH T o search your favorite programme type 1 Press and hold PTY (progr amme type) f or more than 1 second while listening to an FM station. The last selected PTY code and preset number appear . 2 Select one of PTY codes stored in preset number b uttons (1 to 6).
15 ENGLISH Other con v enient RDS functions and adjustments Automatic selection of the station when using the number buttons Usually when you press the n umber button, the preset station is tuned in. Howe v er , when the preset station is an RDS station, something diff erent will happen.
16 ENGLISH Changing the display mode while listening to an FM station Y ou can change the initial indication on the displa y to either station name (PS NAME) or to station frequency (FREQ), while listening to an FM RDS station. • See also “ Changing the general settings (PSM) ” on page 26.
17 ENGLISH 1 Open the control panel. 2 1. Inser t a cassette into the cassette compar tment. The unit tur ns on and tape pla y star ts automatically . 2. Close the control panel by hand. • When one side of the tape reaches its end during play , the other side of the tape automatically star ts playing.
18 ENGLISH T o stop play and eject the cassette Press 0 . T ape play stops, the control panel opens , then the cassette automatically ejects from the cassette compar tment. If you change the source to FM, AM, CD changer or other connected component, the tape pla y also stops (without ejecting the cassette this time).
19 ENGLISH Finding the beginning of a tune Multi Music Scan allows you to automatically start playback from the beginning of a specified tune. Y ou can specify up to 9 tunes ahead of or bef ore the current tune. Specify how man y tunes ahead of or bef ore the current tune the tune y ou want is located.
20 ENGLISH Other con venient tape functions Skipping the blank por tions on the tape Y ou can skip blank portions between the tunes. (Blank Skip) When this function is on, the unit skips blank portions of 15 seconds or more, f ast-forwards to the ne xt tune, then star ts pla ying it.
ENGLISH 21 Adjusting the sound Y ou can adjust the sound characteristics to your pref erence. SOUND ADJUSTMENTS 1 2 CD CD -CH FM/AM 1 Select the item y ou want to adjust. Indication T o do: Range BAS Adjust the bass –06 (min.) — +06 (max.) (Bass) TRE Adjust the treble –06 (min.
22 ENGLISH SCM OFF BEA T SOFT POP Using the Sound Contr ol Memory Y ou can select and store a preset sound adjustment suitable to each pla yback source . ( Advanced SCM ) Selecting and storing the sound modes Once you select a sound mode , it is stored in memor y , and will be recalled e v er y time you select the same source.
ENGLISH 23 Recalling the sound modes Select the source while the “ Link ” indicator is lit on the displa y . The “ Link ” indicator starts flashing, and the sound mode stored in memory for the selected source is recalled. Notes: • Y ou can adjust each sound mode to your pr efer ence, and stor e it in memory .
24 ENGLISH 1 Call up the sound mode y ou want to adjust. See page 22 f or details. 2 Select “ BAS (Bass), ” “ TRE (T reble) ” or “ LOUD (Loudness). ” 3 Adjust the bass or treble level or turn the loudness function ON/OFF . See page 21 f or details.
25 ENGLISH OTHER MAIN FUNCTIONS Setting the clock Y ou can also set the clock system either to 24 hours or 12 hours . 1 Press and hold SEL (select) f o r m ore than 2 seconds so that one of the PSM items appears on the displa y . 2 Set the hour . 1 Select “CLOCK H (Hour)” if not shown on the displa y .
26 ENGLISH Y ou can change the items listed on the ne xt page by using the PSM (Pref erred Setting Mode) control. Basic Procedure Changing the general settings (PSM) 1 Press and hold SEL (select) f or more than 2 seconds so that one of the PSM items appears on the displa y .

28 ENGLISH Canceling Advanced SCM Y ou can cancel the Advanced SCM (Sound Control Memory), and unlink the sound modes and the pla yback sources. When shipped from the f actor y , a different sound mode can be stored in memory for each source so that you can change the sound modes simply b y changing the sources.
29 ENGLISH Selecting the dimmer mode (ONL Y FOR KS-FX850R) When you turn on the car head lights, the displa y automatically dims (A uto Dimmer). When shipped from the f actor y , A uto Dimmer mode is activated. • A UT O: Activ ates Auto Dimmer . • ON: Always dims the displa y .
30 ENGLISH T ur ning on/of f the key-touch tone (ONL Y FOR KS-FX850R) Y ou can deactivate the k ey-touch tone if y ou do not want to mak e it beep when you press a button. When shipped from the f actory , the ke y-touch tone is activated. • ON: Activates the k ey-touch tone.
31 ENGLISH How to detach the control panel Bef ore detaching the control panel, be sure to turn off the power . 1 Unlock the control panel. 2 Pull the control panel out of the unit.
32 ENGLISH 1. Remove the battery holder . 1) Push out in the direction indicated by the arrow using a ball point pen or a similar tool. 2) Remove the battery holder . 2. Place the battery . Slide the battery into the holder with the + side facing upwards so that the battery is fixed in the holder .
33 ENGLISH Using the r emote controller 1 Functions the same as the button on the main unit. 2 • Functions as the BAND button while listening to the r adio (or the D AB tuner). Each time you press the b utton, the band changes. • Functions as the DISC + button while listening to the CD changer .
34 ENGLISH Select the CD automatic changer . Playbac k star ts from the first trac k of the first disc. All tracks of all discs are pla y ed back. CD CHANGER OPERA TIONS W e recommend that you use one of the CH-X series with your unit. If you ha ve another CD automatic changer , consult your JVC IN-CAR ENTER T AINMENT dealer for connections.
35 ENGLISH T o fast-forward or reverse the track Press and hold ¢ , while pla ying a CD , to f ast-f orward the trac k. Press and hold 4 , while pla ying a CD , to re verse the tr ack. T o go to the next tracks or the previous tracks Press ¢ briefly, while playing a CD , to go ahead to the beginning of the next tr ack.
36 ENGLISH Selecting CD playback modes T o play back tracks at random (Random Play) Each time you press MO RND (Monaural/Random/Dolby) while pla ying a CD , CD random play mode changes as f ollows: Mode RND Indicator Plays at random RND1 Lights All trac ks of the current disc, then the trac ks of the ne xt disc, and so on.
37 ENGLISH EXTERNAL COMPONENT OPERA TIONS Y ou can connect the e xter nal component to the CD changer jack on the rear using the Line Input Adaptor KS-U57 (not supplied). Preparations: • F or connecting the Line Input Adaptor KS-U57 and the e xternal component, r efer to the Installation/ Connection Manual (separate volume).
38 ENGLISH DAB TUNER OPERA TIONS W e recommend that you use D AB (Digital A udio Broadcasting) tuner KT -DB1500 with your unit. If you ha ve another D AB tuner , consult your JVC IN-CAR ENTERT AINMENT dealer . • Refer also to the Instructions supplied with y our D AB tuner .
39 ENGLISH 3 Star t searching an ensemble . When an ensemble is receiv ed, searching stops. 4 Select an ser vice y ou want to listen to . T o stop searc hing before an ensemble is received, press the same b utton you ha ve pressed f or searching.
40 ENGLISH Storing DAB services in memory Y ou can preset up to 6 D AB ser vices in each D AB band (D AB1, D AB2 and D AB3) man ually . 1 Select the D AB tuner . Each time you press and hold the b utton, the D AB tuner and the FM/AM tuner are alternately selected.
41 ENGLISH Band/preset number and “ MEMO ” flash alternately for a while. 5 Press and hold the number b utton (in this e xample, 1) f or more than 2 seconds.
42 ENGLISH T uning into a pr eset D AB ser vice Y ou can easily tune into a preset D AB ser vice. Remember that you m ust store ser vices first. If y ou hav e not stored them yet, see pages 40 and 41. 1 Select the D AB tuner . Each time you press and hold the b utton, the D AB tuner and the FM/AM tuner are alternately selected.
43 ENGLISH What y ou can do mor e with D AB T racing the same program automatically (Alternative Reception) Y ou can keep listening to the same prog ram • While receiving a DAB service: When driving in an area where a ser vice cannot be received, this unit automatically tunes in another ensemble or FM RDS station broadcasting the same prog ram.
44 ENGLISH MAINTENANCE T o extend the lifetime of the unit This unit requires v er y little attention, but y ou will be able to e xtend the lif e of the unit if you f ollow the instructions below . T o clean the heads • Clean the heads after every 10 hours of use using a wet-type head cleaning tape (available at an audio store).
45 ENGLISH TROUBLESHOOTING What appears to be trouble is not always serious. Check the following points before calling a ser vice center . Symptoms • A cassette tape cannot be inserted. • Cassette tapes become hot. • T ape sound is at v er y low level and sound quality is degraded.
