INSTRUCTIONS FOR INST ALLA TION, OPERA TION, AND MAINTENANCE OF LEAD-ACID BA TTERIES IN MOTIVE POWER SER VICE Section 28.00 I nstructions for Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Lead-Acid Batt.
3. Be especially careful when working on battery terminal connections. Do not connect any two or more t erminals together unless the connection is a proper a nd correct electrical one. d . When lifting the battery , observe the following precautions: 1.
what you know about a battery’s volts, amps, and ampere-hours, you’re ready to easily change those numbers into the final key concept, watts. W att, W. : Using battery voltage or amperage alone doesn’t tell you e nough about the battery . Multiplying those two values together does.
4. Give the battery an equalizing charge but keep resetting t he charger to the equalize position until the specific gravities remain constant for a period of three hours. At no time should b attery temperature be allowed to exceed 1 10°F (43°C). 5 .
I n sub-freezing temperatures, water should be added j ust before charging is completed to insure prompt mixing with the electrolyte. Otherwise it may freeze on the surface before mixing. No permanent harm results from low temperature operation as long as freezing is avoided.
14. CHARGING CHARACTERISTICS a. Only EnerSys approved charging methods should be u sed. T o maximize life, charging should not result in excessive gassing during the initial stages of charge. In addition, the charging method should keep end-of-charge t emperature below 1 10˚F .
16. DETERMINA TION OF CAP ACITY a. A battery's capacity will, of course, decrease toward the e nd of its life. Assuming no specific cause of trouble, this will be a gradual decrease and ample warning of limiting capacity will be evidenced by the slowing of the truck or other vehicle toward the end of the day's work.
e. Another convenient way to ensure proper fill levels is the use of a single point watering (SPW) system. The EnerSys Battery Irrigation System or EZ Fill System are effecient methods of watering a battery . These reliable quality systems allow the operator to fill to the proper level each and every time.
i . EnerSys Pro-Meter #94870. This shirt pocket sized meter is versatile for 13 ranges in AC, DC and OHM readings. I t has an audible continuity signal and is accurate to 0.75%. Ideal for the person who wants to do basic battery o r charger troubleshooting.
