11 1 Intr oduction Dear User , First of all we wish to thank you f or your confidence in our products. W e hope y ou will enjo y y our new P owerchair . This manual contains important hints and information on: • Safety , • Operation, • Care and maintenance.
12 The initial set up of this wheelchair must be performed by a qualified technician. Procedures other than those described in this manual must be performed by a qualified technician. NO TE: Not all of the components within this manual will necessarily be available with your Spectra Blitz TM power wheelchair .

14 1.2 T ype Classification and Area of Use The Spectra Blitz TM is available with only one maximum speed option. • The 6kmph (4mph) model is a Class 2 / B vehicle. WARNING: • Under no circumstances must the top speed of the Class 2 / B Spectra Blitz TM be increased, to do so will infringe Road T r affic Act Regulations.
15 2 . 1 Repair or Service Information Setup of the Electronic Control Unit is to be perf or med ONL Y by individuals cer tified b y In v acare. The final tuning adjustments of the controller ma y aff ect other activities of the wheelchair . Damage to the equipment could occur under these circumstances.
16 • Always stop before climbing an obstacle. Approach slowly until castors contact the obstacle. Apply power and driv e o ver the obstacle in a controlled manner . • DO NO T use parts, accessories, or adapters other than those authorized by In v acare.
17 RAIN TEST • INV ACARE has tested it’ s power wheelchairs in accordance with ISO 7176 P ar t 9 “Rain T est”. This provides the end user or his/her attendant sufficient time to remo v e his/her pow er wheel- chair from a rain storm and retain wheelchair operation.
18 2.3 Safety Inf ormation on Electr omagnetic Interf erence This electric vehicle was successfully tested in accordance with international standards as to its compliance with Electromagnetic Interf erence (EMI) regulations.
19 2 .4 Safety Precautions/Safe Operation IMPORT ANT W ARNING • The da y-to-da y activities and the more adv anced P owerchair techniques depend, on y our ph ysical capabilities and y our own specific circumstances.
20 SAFETY INDOORS • When using your powerchair indoors always consider the following potential hazards: • Beware of the fact that many of the premises where you are likely to use your powerchair may not hav e been designed with this consideration in mind.
21 SAFETY/HANDLING OF WHEELCHAIRS • Use this inf ormation only as a “basic” guide. The techniques that are discussed on the f ollowing pages hav e been used successfully b y man y . • Individual wheelchair users often de v elop skills to deal with daily living activities that ma y diff er from those described in this manual.
22 SURF ACES AFFECTED BY HEA T • The wheelchair is made from metal and plastic materials and, as with all products made with such materials, it can absorb heat from the sun when used outdoors or exposed to sunlight through windows etc.
23 3 Some Useful Tips Bef ore y ou v enture off on your first journey , ensure that ev er ything is adjusted to y our specific needs, read this manual to f amiliar ise y ourself with the product and its functions. DO NO T attempt to drive without an attendant on hand until you are fully proficient in using and manoeuvring your pow erchair .

26 NEGO TIA TING GRADIENTS/SLOPES • Never attempt to climb or descend an incline where the surface is rough, wet or slippery (gravel, loose chippings, grass, rain, black ice, snow etc.
27 YOU, YOUR PO WERCHAIR AND OTHERS • Powerchairs are strictly f orbidden on motorw a ys and their use is strongly discouraged on high- ways with fast moving traffic. • On the P a v ement, in P edestr ian Zones or in Supermar k ets it is ob vious that you m ust show as much consideration and common sense to others as you expect from them.

32 4 .2 T roub leshooting - Electrical Symptom Batteries draw excessive current when charging. Batter y indicator flashes the charge le v el is low - immediately after recharge. Batter y indicator flashes the charge le v el is low , too soon after being recharged.

34 4.3 Checking Battery Charge Level The f ollo wing “Do’ s” and “Don’ts” are provided f or your con v enience and safety . Don’ts Don’t perf or m an y installation or maintenance without first reading this manual. Don’t make it a habit to discharge batteries to the lowest le v el.

36 5 Legrest Maintenance WARNING: • After ANY adjustments, repair , or ser vice and BEFORE use, mak e sure that all scre ws, nuts and bolts are tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. • It is impor tant f or regular inspection to be carried out on the Ar mrests f or signs of visib le damage.
37 5 .2 Legrest height adjustment 1. Remove any accessory from the legrest(s). 2. Remov e the legrest from the wheelchair . Refer to INST ALLING/REMO VING LEGRESTS in this section of the manual. NO TE: Lay the footrest on a flat surface to simplify this proce- dure.
38 5 .3 Adjusting Angle Adjustable Flip-up Footplates 1. Locate the angle adjusting screw at the bottom of the legrest. 2. Loosen the screw with a hex wrench and adjust the foot plate to the desired angle and position. 3. Tighten the angle adjusting screw .
39 5 . 4 Adjusting / Replacing Foot Plate Heel Strap (if fitted) Adjusting 1. Undo the hook and loop fastening strip and separate the two sides. 2. Adjust to the desired position and fasten hook and loop strips back together . NOTE: When adjusting the heel strap be sure to check that your heel does not contact with the wheelchairs front castors.
40 6. Armrests W ARNING • After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all attaching hard- ware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. • It is impor tant f or regular inspection to be carried out on the Ar mrests f or signs of visib le damage.
41 Removing W ARNING • Ensure joystick unit is switched off and unplugged from wheelchair before removing armrest. • Alternatively , remov e jo ystic k mounting arm from the ar mrest f ollo wing instructions in section 12.3 JO YSTICK MOUNTING HARD W ARE before attempting to remo v e armrest.
42 6 . 2 Adjusting the Armrests W ARNING • Make sure the armrest release and height adjustment handwheels are in the locked position bef ore using the wheelchair .
43 3. Tighten the armpad fixing screws. 4. Repeat STEPS 1-3 for opposite armrest, if necessar y . Armrest Width Adjustment W ARNING • This adjustment should only be performed when the wheelchair is unoccupied. 1. Using a hex wrench, loosen the armrest width adjustment screws.
44 7 Backrest W ARNING • After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all attaching hardware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. • It is impor tant f or regular inspection to be carried out on the Backrest f or signs of visib le damage.
45 7 .2 Adjusting Bac kboar d P osition W ARNING • This adjustment should only be performed when the wheelchair is unoccupied. • T ake care not to damage an y accessories fitted to the backrest. The backboard can be adjusted both in height and width (see section 8 Seating).
46 7 .3 Adjusting Backpost Support Bracket CA UTION: • This adjustment should only be made by an attendant when the the chair is occupied. The backpost support brack et can be adjusted in width. This should be used when adjusting seat and backrest width (see section 8 Seating).

48 The lateral position of the headrest may also be adjusted as follows 1. Loosen the lateral adjustment scre ws using a he x wrench and spanner . 2. Slide the headrest assembly to the desired position.

50 3. Loosen the clamping screws using a hex wrench. 4. Adjust to the desired position. 5. Tighten the clamp scre ws using a he x wrench and replace upholstered pad. 51 7 . 6 Adjusting T ension Adjustable Back Upholstery (if fitted) CA UTION: • This adjustment should only be made when the the chair is unoccupied and the joystick unit switched off. 1. Remove backrest cushion by releasing the hook and loop fastening strips.
52 7 . 7 Installing / Removing Back Cushion CA UTION: • This adjustment should only be made when the the chair is unoccupied and the joystick unit switched off. Installing / Removing NO TE: The cushion inner may be removed from the fabric cover by sliding it out from the cover flap on the underside of the cushion.
53 7 .8 Adjusting Push Handles CA UTION: • After ANY adjustments make sure that all attaching hardware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. The push handles on your Spectra Blitz TM may be adjusted to a more convenient height to allow an attendant to push or maneuver your P owerchair if required 1.
54 8 Seating W ARNING • After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all attaching hardware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. • It is impor tant f or regular inspection to be carried out on the Ar mrests f or signs of visib le damage.
55 8.2 Lapbelt W ARNING • The standard lapbelt is NO T intended to be used as a v ehicle seat belt. A lapbelt is provided f or use while seated in the po wer chair . INV ACARE recommends that y ou k eep the lapbelt f astened at all times while seated in the chair .
56 2. Using a hex wrench loosen the adjustment screws . 3. Gently pull/push the side of the seat, until it reaches the desired position. 4. Re-tighten the adjustment screws using a hex wrench 5. Repeat f or opposite side of chair . 6. Replace the seat cushion 8 .
57 Seat Board Adjustment 1. Remove the seat cushion (see section 8.1). 2. Using a cross point screwdriver loosen the fixing screws. 3. Slide the seatboard until it reaches the desired position. 4. Re-tighten the fixing screws using a cross point screwdriv er .
58 8 . 5 Installing / Removing Seat board W ARNING • This adjustment should only be performed when the wheelchair is unoccupied. • T ake care not to damage an y accessories fitted to the seat board. The seat board can be removed from the wheelchair seat frame.
59 Electrical Adjustment of Seat Angle If your Spectra Blitz TM power chair is fitted with an electrical seat angle adjustment refer to section 12 Controls and Operating y our P owerchair or see the seperate control system user guide 1. Seat angle adjustment is made by operating the control system.
60 9 Anti Tipping Castors W ARNING • After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all attaching hardware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. • The Anti Tipping Castors are an impor tant saftey f eature of the Spectra Blitz TM wheelchair .
61 1 0 Batteries W ARNING • Make sure power to the wheelchair is OFF before performing this procedure. • The use of rubber gloves and chemical goggles is recommended when working with batteries. • Invacare strongly recommends that battery installation and battery replacement always be done by a qualified technician.
62 Removing W ARNING • NEVER allow an y of y our tools and/or batter y cab le(s) to contact BO TH battery ter minal(s)/ post(s) at the same time. An electr ical shor t ma y occur and serious personal injur y or damage ma y occur . • The use of rubber gloves and chemical goggles is recommended when working with batteries.
63 Front Battery Rear Battery P ositiv e (+) Negative (-) 6. Remov e the front battery cover . 7. Remove all connectors from the controller . 8. Remov e the screw that secures the NEGA TIVE (-) blac k battery cable to the negative battery terminal. 9.

65 6. Connect the motor , joystic k and actuator (if fitted) cables to the appropriate controller sock ets . 7. V er ify all cab les are correctly installed and securely tightened. 8. Slide terminal caps onto battery terminals. 9. Attach front cover and fasten with screws provided.
66 10.2 Batteries and battery charging IMPORT ANT W ARNINGS • The batter y charger supplied with y our pow erchair is f or indoor use only , it must be protected from moisture and e xternal heat sources. • Handle the batter y charger with care, if it has been dropped or damaged, do not use it.
67 T o ensure long batter y lif e DO NO T allow y our batteries to become totally discharged. If your P ower- chair is not used for any length of time the batteries must receive a full charge once a month and remain fully charged during storage.
68 CHARGING PROCEDURES IMPORT ANT • Before you attempt charging, ensure you read and understand the instruction manual supplied with the Batter y Charger . T o Charge Batteries: • Check that the ventilation slots on the charger are clean and unobstructed.
69 NO TE An "Overvoltage" condition ma y occur tempor arily while you are descending a steep gradient with fully charged batteries, when the motors vir tually hav e the eff ect of a dynamo, adding to the batteries.
70 1 1 Motor locks, Wheels and Brakes W ARNING • After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all attaching hardware is tightened securely - otherwise injury or damage may result. CAUTION • As with any v ehicle , the wheels and tyres should be chec ked periodically f or crac ks and wear , and should be replaced.
71 11.2 Adjusting Front Castors 1. Remove the headtube cover from the castor headtube. 2. T o proper ly tighten castor journal system and guard against flutter , perform the following chec k: • Tip back the wheelchair to floor . • Pivot both forks and castors to top of their arc simultane- ously .
72 11.3 Drive Wheels Inflation. 1. Locate air valve and remove air cap. 2. Check the pressure r ating marked on the side of the tyre and inflate as necessary . CA UTION • Do not over inflate tyres. As with any vehicle, the wheels and tyres should be checked periodically for wear .
73 11.4 Manual Parking Brakes T o Activ ate Brake. 1. Locate the brake grip handle. 2. Push the brake handle towards the rear of the chair until it engages 3. Repeat for opposite side of chair . T o De-Activate Brake. 1. Locate the brake grip handle. 2.
74 1 2 Controls and operating y our power c hair NO TE Bef ore y ou star t using your P ow erchair you m ust boost the battery charge by carr ying out charg- ing procedures as described in "Battery Charging" and always check the following: 1.
75 12.2 Shark Operation Seated in your P ow erchair . Press the ON/OFF Switch. All batter y gauge indicators will light briefly , then either the current battery charge or lock mode will be indicated. The user can adjust the chair’ s top speed to suit their pref erences and en vironment.
76 1 . Whilst power is on, press and hold the power button for four (4) seconds. 2. The dispaly will turn off immediately 3. After f our (4) seconds all LED’ s will flash br iefly and the horn will sound a shor t beep. The power chair will then turn off.
77 Adjusting Driving Speed There are five pre-set speeds already prog rammed into the Shark control. T o change speed, press the tor toise button to go slo wer or the hare b utton to go f aster . The current speed is indicated in the speedometer displa y .

Fault mode, abnormal condi- tion on the chair Notes Less LEDs imply a reduced battery charge The batteries should be charged as soon as possible The steady LEDs indicate the current charge level of the batteries.
79 12.5 Pilot + Operation Seated in your P owerchair . Press the ON/OFF Switch. The batter y gauge will b link then turn on after second. Check the maximum speed control is set to a level which suits you. Push the joystick to control the speed and direction of the wheelchair .
80 12.6 Pilot + Controller Functions The Pilot + controller fitted to your Spectra Blitz TM power chair has several features and functions. The following procedure shows how to use these. Horn Button Press the button once to sound the intergrated horn.

82 12.7 VSI Operation Seated in your P owerchair . Press the ON/OFF Switch. The batter y gauge will b link then turn on after second. Check the maximum speed control is set to a level which suits you. Push the joystick to control the speed and direction of the wheelchair .
83 CA UTION • F ree wheel operation is only intended f or shor t-ter m use in SPECIAL CIRCUMST ANCES, NO T as a regular or per manent mode of P ow erchair mov ement. In free wheel mode the P owerchair is NO T secured b y the electromagnetic br akes , as both brak e systems are out of action during this time.
84 UNLOCK Function 1. Use the pow er button to s witch the control system on. The speed indicator will be rippling up and down. 2. Move the joystick forward until the joystick beeps, then move the joystick backward until the control system beeps. 3. Release the jo ystic k, the control system will beep .

86 12.9 Driving practice With the jo ystick y ou no w control speed and direction of the P owerchair . The more you mov e it f orward, the f aster you tra vel. T o rev erse , pull the jo ystic k backw ard. By moving the jo ystic k left or right (while the P ow erchair is mo ving f orward or bac kward) y ou steer the P owerchair .
87 12.11 A CS Dual Contr ol Operation The P owerchair ma y be controlled by the user or b y an attendant. Press the ON/OFF Switch on the user control. All batter y gauge indicators will light briefly , then either the current batter y charge.
88 12.12 Pilot + Dual Control Operation The P owerchair ma y be controlled b y the user or by an attendant. Press the ON/OFF Switch on the user control.
89 12.13 Pilot + Attendant Control Press the ON/OFF Switch. The batter y gauge will b link then turn on after second. Chec k the maximum speed control is set to a level which suits you. Push the joystick to control the speed and direction of the wheelchair .

This type of mounting can mov e the jo ystic k position either a wa y from, or to wards the armpad.
93 Installing / Removal. 1. T ur n off the controller and unplug the controller communication cab le (if applicab le) 2. Unscrew the small handwheel located on the underside of the armrest. 3. Slide the joystick mounting arm through / into the clamping tube until it comes away / is at the desired position.
94 1 3 T ranspor tation CA UTION INV ACARE alwa ys advises that a P ow erchair secured in a v ehicle will not provide the equiv alent safety level and security as bespoke seating systems and recommends transfer to the vehicle seating, but also recognises that it is not always practical for the user to be transferred.
95 5 . When attaching the tie-downs to the P owerchair , it is imperativ e the y are fix ed onto the Tie-Down points only of the P owerchair and not onto any attachments or accessories, as sho wn below (wheels, castors, footrests, armrests, anti-tipping levers etc.
