Best Practices in Game Design for the Ultra-Mobile PC by Matt Gillespie, Michael Finkel and Victoria Bailey.
The Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) will expa nd the market for PC games that run on Microsoft Windows* XP, as long as developers consider certai n design requirements to ens ure a good user e xperience. In most case s, a single version of games ca n span both the UMPC and traditional PC pl atforms.
Best Practice : Ideally, games design ed with the UMPC i n mind shoul d use text sparingly and consider the UMPC screen size when choosing a font. Likewis e, icons shou ld not rely heavily o n fine de tails, so different o bjects are diff erent enough to be ea sily distinguishe d from one another , even on the smalle r UMPC screen.
2.3 Game Window Size Issue: If game windo ws use a fixed size, rather than automaticall y resizing themselves to fill t he full UMP C screen, parts o f the game may n ot be visible all at once, and , in some cases, ce rtain parts may n ot be reachable at all, a s shown in Figure 2.
movement contr olling the curs or). This issu e tends to aris e particula rly often, for example, in ga mes that shift the u ser's perspect ive so that the c ursor is always at the cen ter of the scr een (whi ch is commo n in firs t-person shooters ).
Issue (Game Re solution Lar ger than S creen): In those cas es where the game window takes up more t han the full vert ical space of the screen, the tou ch screen may be incorrectly mapp ed vertically in stead of hor izontally, as sh own in Figure 4.
3.4 Accommodating Right-Click Functionality Issue: On a typi cal UMPC touch- screen, users perform right -clicks by holdi ng down the c lick on the screen for a longer time tha n for a left-c lick, which can cause users to inadvert ently left-click whe n they mean to r ight-click.
4.2 Limiting the Need for Diverse Command Inputs Issue: The UMPC form factor provid es for a limited nu mber of inputs, re lative to the full key board and mouse a vailable fr om a standa rd PC.
5 Conclusion Game develo pers and architects providin g support for the UMP C platform in mainstream g ame offering s can d evelop a dis crete se t of des ign considerat ions that addres s common issues that arise d uring the dev elopment pro cess. The best practices de scribed in this document provi de a foundation f or that effort .
