15 Remote Contr oller Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t work reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix new and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the re mote controller for a long time, remo ve the batte ries to pre vent damage from leakage or corrosion.

20 Remote Contr oller —Continued Dock mode is for controlling an Apple iPod in an Onkyo RI Dock. T o control an RI Dock, press the [Dock] Remote Mode button to select the Dock remote contr oller mode. In order to control an RI Dock, you must fi rst enter the appropriate remote cont rol code (see page 137).
21 About Home Theater Thanks to the A V controller’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound with a real sense of mo vement in your own home—just lik e being in a movie th eater or concert hall. W ith D VDs you can enjoy DTS and Dolb y Digital.
22 Connecting the A V Contr oller The A V controller is designed to be used with a separa te multichannel power amplif ier . Y ou connect the A V con- troller’ s PRE OUT jacks to the amplif ier’ s inputs, and connect your speakers to the amplif ier’ s speakers termi- nals.
23 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued Connecting a P owered Subw oofer Using a suitable cable, connect the A V controller’ s SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT to the input on your powered sub- woofer . If your subwoofer is un powered and yo u’ re using an external amplif ie r , connect the SUBWOOFER PRE OUT to the amp’ s input.
24 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued Y ou can connect the A V controller to a multichannel po wer amplifier with bala nced XLR input jacks by using sev eral XLR audio cables. The A V controller’ s balanced PRE OUT XLR jacks are wired as sho wn.
25 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued The FR ONT L/R and SURR BA CK L/R outputs can be used wi th front speakers and surround back speakers, respec- tiv ely , or bi-amped to provide separate tweeter and woofer feeds for a pair of front speak ers that support bi-amping, providing improv ed bass and treble performance.
26 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop an tenna, and ho w to connect commercially av ailable ou tdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V controller won’ t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected , so you must connect th e antenna to use the tuner .
27 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued If you cannot achie ve good re ception with the supplied indoor AM loop antenna, try using it with a commer- cially av ailable outdoor AM antenna (see page 27).
28 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued • Before making any A V connections, r ead the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked a ll A V connections.
29 Connecting the A V Contr oller —Continued By connecting both the audio an d video outputs of your D VD player and ot her A V components to the A V controller, you can switch the audio and video signals simultaneously simply by changing th e input source on the A V controller.

52 First Time Setup —Contin ued Component Video Setup If you connect a video component to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 3, you must assign COM- PONENT VIDEO IN 3 to the D VD input selector .
53 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to OPTICAL IN 2, you must assign OPTICAL IN 2 to the “CD” input sele ctor .
54 First Time Setup —Contin ued If you connect a component to the A V controller’ s analog multichannel input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to the MUL TI CH input, you must assign it to the D VD input selector .
55 First Time Setup —Continued T o use bi-amping, you must change the “Speaker T ype” setting. For hookup information, see page 25. Notes: • When bi-amping is used, the A V cont roller is able to driv e up to 5.1 speakers in the main room. • Before you change these settings, turn do wn the vol- ume.
56 First Time Setup —Contin ued For the on screen setup menus to display properly , you must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V control- ler by usi ng its [Setup] butto n, arro w buttons, and [Enter] button.

This process takes a fe w minutes. Please refrain from talking during measurements and do not stand between speakers and the microphon e.
61 First Time Setup —Continued Notes: • When the automatic speaker setup is complete, the “Equalizer Settings” (page 110) will be set to Audys- sey . • Y ou can cancel the automa tic speaker setu p at any point in the procedure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.

65 Basic Operations —Continued This section explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can adjust the b rightness of the display . Y ou can adju st the volume of each speaker while listen- ing to an input source. These temporary adjustments are cancelled when the A V controller is set to Standby .
66 Basic Oper ations —Continued W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V controller to turn of f automatica lly after a spec ified pe riod. If you need to cancel the sleep timer, press the [Sleep] button repeatedly un til the SLEEP indicator disappears.

69 Listening to the Radio —Continued Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fa vorite AM and FM radio stations. Note: Y ou can name your radio pr esets for easy identification (see page 118).
70 Listening to the Radio —Continued HD Radio technology brings digital radio to con ven- tional analog AM and FM radi o station s, with improve d sound quality , better receptio n, and new data services. HD Radio technology provides CD-quality sound for FM stations and FM-quality sound for AM stations.
71 Listening to the Radio —Continued Selecting Multic ast Channels FM HD Radio stations can transmit multiple programs on the same frequenc y by using what are call ed multicast channels. If the current HD Radio station is broadcasting multicast channels, the SPS (secondary program ser- vices) indicator lights up.
72 Listening to the Radio —Continued RDS only works in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned to an RDS station, the RDS indi- cator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radi o signals.

76 Listening to the Radio —Continued Signing Up for XM Satellite Radio Once you ha ve installed th e XM Mini-T uner and Home Dock, you are ready to subscribe to XM Satellite Radio.
