5 3 B ASIC OPERA TION ■ Receiving and transmitting CA UTION: T ransmitting without an antenna may dam- age the transceiv er. q Rotate [V OL] clockwise to turn power ON, then set to the 10 o ’ clock position. • If “ T SQL ” appears on the display , push [ – ] for 2 sec.
6 3 BASIC OPERA TION ■ Displa y backlighting The transceiv er has display bac klighting with a 5 or 10 sec. timer f or nighttime operation. The display bac klighting can be turned ON continuously or tur ned OFF , if desired. ➥ Push any s witch except [PTT] to turn the backlighting ON.
7 3 BASIC OPERA TION ■ Repeater operation A repeater amplifies receiv ed signals and retransmits them on a different channel, allo wing you to communicate ov er greater distances with improv ed reliability . When using a re- peater , the transmit channel is shifted from the receive chan- nel by 30 channels .
8 4 SCAN OPERA TION ■ Scan types The transceiv er has 3 scan types with tag functions and 4 re- sume conditions providing scanning v ersatility . T ag channels are independently set for open, group and pri- ority scans. Initially , all channels may be set as tag channels f or all scans.
9 4 SCAN OPERA TION ■ Gr oup and priority scans Group and prior ity scans repeatedly watch a priority channel while scanning only speci fi ed channels. This is useful when waiting f or calls on the prior ity channel or se ver al specified channels.
10 4 SCAN OPERA TION ■ Scan resume condition The scan resume condition can be selected as a pause or timer scan. q Push [LO W] f or 2 sec. to enter set mode. w Push [LO W] se ver al times until “ SC ” appears. e Push [ Y ] or [ Z ] to select the scan resume timer .
11 5 T ONE SQUELCH OPERA TION ■ T one squelch operation The tone squelch opens only when receiving a signal con- taining a matching CTCSS (subaudib le) tone . Y ou can silently wait f or calls from group members using the same tone. q Set the desired channel.
■ Charging precautions NEVER attempt to charge dr y cell bat- teries. This will cause internal liquid leakage and damage the battery case and transceiv er. NEVER connect two or more chargers at the same time. Charging ma y not occur under temper- atures of 10 ° C (50 ° F) or ov er tempera- tures of 40 ° C (104 ° F).
13 6 BA TTER Y P ACKS D Multiple char ging with the BC-121 The optional BC-121 allows up to 6 battery pac ks to be charged simultaneously . Six AD-81 ’ s and an AC adapter (ma y be supplied with the BC-121 depending on version) are additionally required.
14 6 BA TTER Y P ACKS ■ About the battery pack D Operating period Depending on the attached battery pack, the operating period of the transceiv er varies.
O THER FUNCTIONS 15 7 ■ Time-out timer T o prev ent continuous, extend tr ansmissions, the transceiver has a time-out timer . This timer tur ns a transmission OFF 1, 2, 3 or 4 min. after it star ts. This timer can be cancelled. Approx. 5 sec. bef ore the time-out time elapses, the trans- ceiver emits a beep tone .
16 7 O THER FUNCTIONS ■ T ransmit loc kout The transmit loc kout function inhibits tr ansmission while re- ceiving a signal or when receiving a signal with an unmatched CTCSS tone. q Push [LO W] for 2 sec. to enter set mode. w Push [LO W] sev eral times until “ Lo ” appears.
17 8 TR OUBLESHOO TING If your tr ansceiver seems to be malfunctioning, please chec k the f ollowing points bef ore sending it to a ser vice center . PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION REF . No power comes ON. • The battery is exhausted. • Bad connection to the battery pack.
