■ Antenna installation D Antenna location T o obtain maxim um perf ormance from the transceiver , select a high-quality antenna and mount it in a good location. A non- radial antenna should be used when using a magnetic mount. D Antenna connector The antenna uses a PL-259 connector .
18 4 FREQUENCY SETTING ■ Preparation D T urning po wer ON/OFF Bef ore operating the transceiv er for the first time it’ s a good idea to reset the transceiv er’ s CPU . This will ensure that all transceiv er settings are at their def aults. See p.
■ Loc k functions T o pre vent accidental frequency changes and unnecessary function access, use the loc k function. The transceiver and HM-98 hav e 2 different loc k functions. D Frequency loc k This function locks the tuning dials and s witches electronically and also locks the microphone s witches.

■ Setting a tuning step T uning steps can be selected f or each band. This transceiver has 8 tuning steps as f ollows: • 5 kHz • 10 kHz • 12.5 kHz • 15 kHz • 20 kHz • 25 kHz • 30 kHz • 50 kHz q Select VFO mode with the desired band’ s [V/M H ].
■ Using the keypad The frequency can be directly set via numeral ke ys on the HM-98 microphone. q Push [BAND] to select the desired operating band. w Push [VFO] to select VFO mode, if necessary . e Push [ENT] to activate the k eypad f or digit input.

24 5 BASIC OPERA TION ■ Monitor function This function is used to listen to weak signals without disturb - ing the squelch setting or to open the squelch manually e ven when mute functions such as the tone squelch are in use. ➥ Push the desired band’ s [MONI] to toggle the monitor func- tion ON and OFF .
25 5 BASIC OPERA TION ■ Selecting output power The transceiv er has 4 output po w er le vels to suit y our oper at- ing requirements. Low output powers during shor t-distance communications ma y reduce the possibility of interference to other stations and will reduce current consumption.
■ Accessing a repeater When using a repeater , the transmit frequency is shifted from the receive frequency b y the offset frequency . (p. 30) It is con- venient to prog ram repeater inf ormation into memor y chan- nels. (p . 32) q Select the desired band with the desired band’ s [MAIN].

29 6 REPEA TER OPERA TION ■ Subaudible tone (encoder function) Some repeaters require subaudible tones to be accessed. Subaudible tones are superimposed ov er your normal signal and must be set in adv ance. Each operating band and each memor y channel hav e inde- pendent settings.
30 6 REPEA TER OPERA TION ■ Offset frequency When communicating through a repeater , the transmit fre- quency is shifted from the receiv e frequency by an amount determined by the offset frequency . q Select the mode/channel you wish to set the offset fre- quency to , such as VFO mode or memor y/call channel.

40 8 SCRA TCH P AD MEMOR Y ■ What is a scratch pad memory? During VFO operation, the transceiver automatically memo - rizes operating frequency inf or mation, separate from regular memor y channels, when transmitting on a ne w frequency .

MEMOR Y SCAN (p . 45) Repeatedly scans memory channels e xcept those set as skip channels. Used to search through often-used memories and f or bypassing normally busy channels such as re - peater frequencies. FULL/B AND SCAN (p. 43) Repeatedly scans all frequen- cies ov er the entire band.

■ Selecting scan edges The scanning range can be set to all frequencies (full scan) or between two user-programmed frequencies (progr ammed scan). Scan edges can be programmed in the same manner as memor y channels. Scan edges are programmed into scan edges, 1A/1B to 3A/3B , in memor y channels.

46 9 SCAN OPERA TION ■ Skip channel setting Memor y channels can be set to be skipped f or memor y skip scan. In addition, memor y channels can be set to be skipped f or both memory skip scan and full/band/programmed scan (frequency skip scan). This is useful to speedup the scan in- ter v al.
47 10 B AND SCOPE ■ Operation The band scope function allows you to visually chec k a spec- ified frequency range. Sweep range varies ±50 kHz through ±500 kHz with setting of the s weep tuning steps. Receive audio is m uted while monitor ing the band scope.
■ Priority watch types Prior ity watch checks f or signals on a frequency ev er y 5 sec. while operating on a VFO frequency . The transceiver has 2 prior ity watch types to suit y our needs. The watch resumes according to the selected scan resume condition.

50 12 SUB A UDIBLE T ONE OPERA TION ■ T one squelch operation The tone squelch opens only when receiving a signal con- taining a matching subaudible tone. Y ou can silently wait for calls from group members using the same tone. q Select the desired band with the desired band’ s [MAIN].
51 12 SUBA UDIBLE T ONE OPERA TION D Setting subaudible tones f or tone squelch operation (CTCSS tones) Separate tone frequencies can be set f or tone squelch oper- ation than f or repeater operation (the same range of tones is av ailable). Like repeater tones , these are set in the edit screen.

53 12 SUBA UDIBLE T ONE OPERA TION ■ T one scan The transceiv er can detect the subaudib le tone frequency in a received signal. By monitoring a signal that is being transmit- ted on a repeater input frequency , you can determine the tone frequency required to access the repeater .
■ Pr ogramming a DTMF code DTMF codes are used for autopatching, accessing repeaters, controlling other equipment, etc. The transceiver has 14 DTMF memory channels (D0–D9, DA–DD) f or storage of often-used DTMF codes of up to 16 digits. q Push [DTMF] f or 2 sec.
■ T ransmitting a DTMF code D A utomatic transmission (DTMF memor y) The selected DTMF code is transmitted at each push of the PTT s witch when the DTMF memor y encoder is turned ON. q Push [DTMF] to turn the DTMF memor y encoder ON. • Push [CHG/L] if [DTMF] is not displa yed.

The spec- ified period is retained even when the transceiv er is tur ned OFF by the auto po wer-off function.
65 15 O THER FUNCTIONS ■ Squelch dela y During operation, received signal strength often fluctuates. This can result in annoying repeated opening and closing of the squelch during reception of the same signal. The trans- ceiver has a b uilt-in squelch delay function which helps pre- vent this .

73 15 O THER FUNCTIONS D Adjusting the transmit signal output from the TNC When setting data transmission speed to 9600 bps, the data signal coming from the TNC is applied exclusiv ely to the in- ternal limiter circuitr y to automatically maintain band width.
