Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only approved tools and t est equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents.

Chapter 2. Important ser vice information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies to all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for replacing FRUs.
• If an adapter or a device consists of mor e than one FRU , any of the FRUs may be the cause of the err or . Before replacing the adapter or device, r emove the FRUs, one by one, to see if the symptoms change. Replace only the FRU that changed the sympt oms.
• The PEW r ecord is the 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, where model = “C T O” (Example: 1829-CT O). • eSupport will show both the CT O and CMV machine type models (Example: 1829-CT O and 1829-W15 will be found on the eSupport site.) • The HMM will have the 4-digit MT and 3-digit CT O model only (Example: 1829-C T O).

T able 1. FRU tests (continued) FRU Applicable t est T r ackP oint or pointing device If the T rackP oint does not work, check the conguration as specied in the ThinkPad Setup. If the T r ackP oint is disabled, select Automatic to enable it. After you use the T rackP oint, the point er may drift on the scr een for a short time.
Note: Output voltage of pin no.2 of the ac power adapter may different fr om the one you are servicing. 3. If the voltage is not corr ect, replace the ac power adapter . 4. If the voltage is acceptable, do the following: • Replace the system board. • If the problem persists, go to “FRU tests” on page 27.
4. If the voltage is more than +11.0 V dc, measur e the r esistance between battery t erminals 5 and 7. The r esistance must be 4 to 30 K Ω. If the r esistance is not corr ect, replace the batt ery pack. If the resistance is correct, r eplace the system boar d.
Chapter 4. Related ser vice information This chapter pr esents following information: • “Restoring the fact ory contents by using Recovery Disc Set” on page 31 • “P asswords” on page 32 .
2. Insert the Operating System Recovery Disc int o the DVD drive. 3. P ress F10 to save the ThinkP ad Setup congur ation changes. F ollow the instructions on the scr een to begin the r ecovery pr ocess. 4. Select your language and click Ne xt . 5. Read the license.
Attention: If the user HDP has been forgotten, check whether a master har d disk password has been set. If a master hard disk password has been set, it can be used to access the hard disk drive.
1. T urn on the comput er . 2. When the ThinkP ad logo comes up, immediately press F1 to enter ThinkP ad Setup. 3. Select Security . 4. Select P assword . 5. Select Hard-disk x password , wher e x is the letter of the har d disk drive. A pop-up window opens.
• The time set on the r esume timer elapses. Note: The comput er does not accept any input immediately aft er it enters sleep (standby) mode. Wait a few seconds before taking any action to reenter oper ation mode.

Notes: • Make sure that you use the correct scr ew. If you have a tor que screwdriver , tighten all scr ews rmly to the tor que shown in the table for each step in Chapter 8 “Removing and r eplacing a FRU” on page 49. Never use a screw that you removed.

Removing and replacing a FRU External CRU statement t o customers: Some problems with your pr oduct can be r esolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU . ” Some CRUs ar e designat ed as Self-service CRUs and others are designated as Optional-service CRUs.
T o remove the SIM card, you need t o remove the batt ery pack rst. (See “1010 Battery pack” on page 50.) After you nish the servicing, make sure that you insert the car d back int o the slot rmly .
