2 I. GENERAL OPERA TION • Read, understand, and f ollow all instructions in the manual and on the machine bef ore star ting. • Only allow responsib le adults, who are f amiliar with the in struc tions, to operate the machine. • Clear the area of objects such as rocks , toys , wire, etc.
3 W ARNING: In order to prevent ac ci - den tal starting when setting up, trans- port ing, ad just ing or making repairs, al ways dis con nect spark plug wire and place wire where it can not contact spark plug. W ARNING: Do not coast do wn a hill in neutral, you ma y lose control of the tractor .

T o ensure saf e and proper operation of your tr actor all par ts and hardware you assemb le must be tightened securely . Use the correct tools as necessar y to insure proper tightness.
7 ASSEMBLE GA UGE WHEELS T O MO WER DECK (See Fig. 5) The gauge wheels are designed to keep the mo wer deck in proper position when operating mow er . Be sure they are prop er ly adjusted to ensure optimum mower per f or - mance. • Slide gauge wheel bar down into brack et channel, Be sure that gauge wheel bar aligning holes are on top .

9 CHECK TIRE PRESSURE The tires on your tr actor were ov er infl ated at the factory f or shipping pur poses. Correct tire pressure is impor tant f or best cutting performance. • Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown in “PRODUCT SPEC I FI CA TIONS” section of this man ual.

12 OPERA TION 02774 NO TE: Under cer tain conditions when tractor is standing idle with the engine running, hot engine exhaust gases ma y cause “bro wning” of g rass. T o eliminate this possibility , alwa ys stop engine when stopping tractor on grass areas .
13 OPERA TION 0277 5 LO W POSITION T O OPERA TE MO WER (See Fig. 10) Y our tractor is equipped with an operator presence sensing s witch. Any attempt b y the operator to leav e the seat with the engine running and the attachment clutch engaged will shut off the engine.
14 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 8) When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mov e fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.
15 OPERA TION MO WING TIPS • Mower should be properly lev eled f or best mowing per- f or mance. See “T O LEVEL MO WER HOUSING” in the Ser vice and Adjustments section of this manual. • The left hand side of mower should be used f or trim- ming.

17 MAINTENANCE TRA CT OR Alwa ys obser ve saf ety rules when performing any main- te nance. BRAKE OPERA TION If tractor requires more than six (6) f eet stopping distance at high speed in highest gear , then brak e must be adjusted. (See “TO ADJUST BRAKE” in the Ser vice and Ad just ments section of this manual).
18 02463 MAINTENANCE TRANSAXLE COOLING The transmission f an and cooling fi ns should be kept clean to assure proper cooling. Do not attempt to clean f an or transmission while engine is running or while the transmission is hot. T o prev ent pos- si ble damage to seals , do not use high pressure water or steam to clean transaxle.
19 MAINTENANCE IN-LINE FUEL FIL TER (See Fig. 17) The fuel fi lter should be re placed once each season. If fuel fi l ter becomes clogged, ob struct ing fuel fl ow to car bu re tor , re place ment is re quired. • With engine cool, remov e fi lter and plug fuel line sec- tions.
