11 OPERA TION The operation of any tractor can result in f oreign objects thrown into the e yes, which can result in severe e ye dam age. Al ways wear saf ety glass es or eye shields while op- erating y our tractor or per form ing any adjustments or repairs.
12 OPERA TION T O OPERA TE ON HILLS W ARNING: Do not drive up or down hills with slopes greater than 15° and do not drive across an y slope . • Choose the slowest speed bef ore star ting up or down hills. • A void stopping or changing speed on hills.
13 BEFORE ST AR TING THE ENGINE CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL • The engine in your tr actor has been shipped, from the f actor y , already fi lled with sum mer weight oil. • Check engine oil with tr actor on lev el ground. • Unthread and remov e oil fi ll cap/dipstic k; wipe oil off.

16 B A TTER Y Y our tractor has a batter y charging system which is suf fi cient f or nor mal use. Howe ver , periodic charging of the batter y with an automotiv e charger will extend its lif e. • K eep batter y and ter minals clean. • K eep batter y bolts tight.
17 MAINTENANCE ENGINE LUBRICA TION Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API ser vice classifi cation SF-SJ. Select the oil’ s SAE viscosity grade according to your e xpected operating temperature.
18 MAINTENANCE MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffl er and spar k arrester (if equipped) as it could create a fi re hazard and/or dam- age. SP ARK PLUGS Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing season or after e very 100 hours of operation, whichev er occurs fi rst.
19 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS T O LEVEL MO WER HOUSING Adjust the mower while tr actor is parked on le vel g round or drive wa y . Make sure tires are properly infl ated (See “PROD UCT SPECIFICA TIONS” section of this man ual). If tires are ov er or under infl ated, y ou will not proper ly adjust you r mow er.

21 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS TRANSAXLE MO TION CONTROL LE VER NEUTRAL ADJUSTMENT(See Fig. 25) The motion control le ver has been pre set at the factory and adjustment should not be necessar y . • Loosen adjustment bolt in front of the right rear wheel, and lightly tighten.
22 T O ST ART ENGINE WITH A WEAK BA TTER Y (See Fig. 27) WA R N I N G : Lead-acid batteries gen- er ate ex plo sive gases. Keep sparks, fl ame and smoking ma te ri als awa y from bat ter ies. Always wear e ye pro tec tion when around batteries. If your battery is too weak to star t the engine, it should be recharged.
23 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS HOOD T O REPLA CE HEADLIGHT BULB • Raise hood. • Pull b ulb holder out of the hole in the backside of the grill. • Replace b ulb in holder and push bulb holder securely back into the hole in the bac kside of the gr ill.
