14 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 7) When star ting the engine for the fi rst time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take e xtra cranking time to mov e fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.
15 OPERA TION FIG. 12 PURGE TRANSMISSION CA UTION: Never engage or disengage freewheel le ver while the engine is run- ning. T o ensure proper operation and perf ormance, it is rec om - mend ed that the transmission be purged bef ore operating tractor f or the fi rst time.

17 MAINTENANCE TRA CT OR Alwa ys obser ve saf ety rules when performing any main- te nance. BRAKE OPERA TION If tractor requires more than fi ve (5) f eet to stop at highest speed in highest gear on a le vel, dr y concrete or pav ed surf ace, then brak e must be check ed and adjusted, then brak e must be adjusted.
18 MAINTENANCE TRANSAXLE COOLING The f an and cooling fi ns of transmission should be k ept clean to assure proper cooling. Do not attempt to clean f an or transmission while engine is running or while the transmission is hot. T o pre vent pos- sible damage to seals , no not use high pressure water or steam to clean transaxle.
19 MAINTENANCE 00 667 MUFFLER Inspect and replace corroded muffl er and spark arrester (if equipped) as it could create a fi re hazard and/or dam- age. SP ARK PLUGS Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing season or after e ver y 100 hours of operation, whiche ver occurs fi rst.

23 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS TRANSMISSION REMO V AL/REPLA CEMENT Should your tr ansmission require removal f or ser vice or re place ment, it should be purged after reinstallation and bef ore op er at ing the tractor . See “PURGE TRANS MIS SION” in the Operation section of this manual.
24 REPLA CING B A TTER Y (See Fig. 29) W ARNING: Do not short battery ter- mi nals by allowing a wrenc h or any other object to contact both terminals at the same time. Bef ore connecting battery , remove metal bracelets, wristwatch bands, rings, etc.
25 T O REPLA CE HEADLIGHT BULB • Raise hood. • Pull bulb holder out of the hole in the bac kside of the grill. • Replace bulb in holder and push b ulb holder securely back into the hole in the bac kside of the grill.
26 ST ORA GE Immediately prepare your tr actor for storage at the end of the season or if the tractor will not be used f or 30 days or more. W ARNING: Ne ver store the trac tor with gas o line in the tank inside a building where fumes may reac h an open fl ame or spark.
27 TR OUBLESHOO TING POINTS Will not start 1. Out of fuel. 1. Fill fuel tank. 2. Engine not “CHOKED” proper ly . 2. See “T O ST ART ENGINE” in Operation section. 3. Engine fl ooded. 3. Wait se veral min utes before attempting to star t. 4. Bad spar k plug.
