5 General Use • Read all instructions in this operator ’s manual and on the machine before starting it. Ensure that you understand them and then abide by them. • Learn how to use the machine and its controls safely and learn how to stop quickly .
6 • Be careful when rounding fixed objects, so that the blades do not hit them. Never drive over foreign objects. • Only use the machine in daylight or in other well-lit conditions. Keep the machine a safe distance from holes or other irregularities in the ground.
7 Driving on Slopes Driving on slopes is one of the operations where the risk is greatest that the driver will lose control or the machine will tip over , which can result in serious injury or death. All slopes require extra caution. If you cannot reverse up a slope or if you feel unsure, do not mow the slope.
8 Children • Serious accidents may occur if you fail to be on guard for children in the vicinity of the machine. Children are often attracted to the machine and mowing work. Never assume that children will stay put where you last saw them. • Keep children away from the mowing area and under close supervision by another adult.
9 • Allow the engine to cool before refueling. Do not smoke. Do not fill fuel in the vicinity of sparks or open flames. • If leaks arise in the fuel system, the engine must not be started until the problem has been resolved. • Store the machine and fuel in such a way that there is no risk of leaking fuel or fuel vapor leading to damages.
10 • Never use the machine indoors or in spaces lacking proper ventilation. The exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, an odorless, poisonous, and lethal gas. • Stop and inspect the equipment if you run over or into anything. If necessary , make repairs before starting.

12 ASSEMBL Y Y our new mower has been assembled at the factory with the exception of those parts left un- assembled for shipping purposes. T o ensure safe and proper operation of your mower , all parts and hardware you assemble must be tightened securely .
13 NOTE: Y ou may now roll or drive the mower of f of the skid. Follow the appropriate instruction below to remove the mower from the skid. Adjustments may be required to get uniform positioning of the control lever . Refer to the "Service and Adjustment" section of this manual.
14 CHECKLIST PLEASE REVIEW THE FOLLOWING CHECKLIST • All assembly instructions have been completed • No remaining loose parts in crate • Seat is adjusted properly and securely fastened • All tires are properly inflated • Check wiring. See that all connections are still secure, and wires are properly clamped.
15 OPERA TION CONTROLS 1. PTO SWITCH – Used to engage or disengage the deck blades. 2. FOOT PEDAL – Used to raise, lower and select various cutting heights of the deck. 3. CONTROL LEVERS – Sets the speed of the mower in both forward and reverse directions and turns the mower .
16 OPERA TION HOW TO USE YOUR MOWER TO SET P ARKING BRAKE (See Fig. 3) Y our mower is equipped with an operator presence system. When the engine is running, any attempt by the operator to leave the seat without first setting the park brake will shut off the engine.
17 FIGURE 4A OPERA TION TO ADJUST THE DECK CUTTING HEIGHT (See Fig. 5) The deck cutting height is obtained by pressing the foot pedal forward to lift the deck. T o lower the deck, you apply pressure to the top side of the foot pedal and allow it to pivot while allowing the lift arm to rotate to the rear of the unit.
18 TO OPERA TE MOWER Y our mower is equipped with an operator presence system. When the engine is running, any attempt by the operator to leave the seat without first setting the park brake will shut off the engine. • Select desired height of cut. • Start deck blades by pulling the PTO switch up into the engaged position.
19 • The slowest speed possible should be used before starting up or down hills. • Avoid stopping or changing speed on hills. • If stopping is absolutely necessary , pull drive levers into the neutral position and push to the outside of the unit and engage the park brake.
20 OPERA TION T O ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 3) When starting the engine for the first time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take extra cranking time to move fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure IZT (Integraded Zeroturn T ransaxle) bypass linkages are in the drive position.
21 MOWING TIPS • The cutting deck should be properly leveled for best mowing performance. See “ TO LEVEL DECK ” in the Service and Adjustment section of this manual. • The left hand side of the deck should be used for trimming. • Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area that has been cut.

23 LUBRICA TION CHART CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES IMPORT ANT : DO NOT OIL OR GREASE THE PIVOT POINTS WHICH HA VE SPECIAL NYLON BEARINGS. VISCOUS LUBRICANTS WILL A TTRACT DUST AND DIRT THA T WILL SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THE SELF-LUBRICA TING BEARINGS. 24 CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES FIGURE 8 TO SHARPEN BLADE (See Fig. 9) Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration and eventual damage to mower and engine. • The blade can be sharpened with a file or on a grinding wheel.
25 CLEAN AIR SCREEN Air screen must be kept free of dirt and chaff to prevent engine damage from overheating. Refer to your engine manual for the proper cleaning procedure. CLEAN AIR INT AKE/COOLING AREAS T o insure proper cooling, make sure the grass screen, cooling fins, and other external surfaces of the engine are kept clean at all times.
26 CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES Every 100 hours of operation (more often under extremely dusty , dirty conditions), remove the blower housing and other cooling shrouds. Clean the cooling fins and external surfaces as necessary . Make sure the cooling shrouds are reinstalled.
27 SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT W ARNING BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OR ADJUSTMENTS: • Set park brake to engaged position. • Place PTO switch in the disen- gaged position (pressed down). • T urn ignition key "OFF" and re- move the key . • Make sure the blades and all moving parts have completely stopped.
28 FRONT-TO-BACK ADJUSTMENT (See Fig. 15). IMPORT ANT : DECK MUST BE LEVEL SIDE- TO-SIDE. IF THE FOLLOWING FRONT-TO- BACK ADJUSTMENT IS NECESSARY , BE SURE TO ADJUST BOTH FRONT OR BOTH REAR LINKAGES EQUALL Y SO THE DECK WILL ST A Y LEVEL.
29 DECK BEL T INST ALLA TION (See Figs. 1 6 and 17) NOTE: For ease in installing the deck belt, refer to the routing decal on the front edge of the deck. • Wrap the deck belt around the electric clutch that is located on the engine shaft. • Push the rest of the belt through the IZT(Integraded Zeroturn T ransaxle) support and up onto the deck.
30 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENT W ARNING Lead-acid batteries generate explosive gases. Keep sparks, flame and smoking materials away from batteries. Always wear eye protection when around batteries. If your battery is too weak to start the engine, it should be recharged.
31 SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT W ARNING Do not short battery terminals by allowing a wrench or any other object to contact both terminals at the same time. Before connecting battery , remove metal bracelets, wristwatch bands, rings, etc. Positive terminal must be connected first to prevent sparking from accidental grounding.
32 SER VICE AND ADJUSTMENT • 1/4" gap should exist between the "U" shaped brake arm and the inside of the brake bolt head. See Fig. 20.
33 STORAGE Immediately prepare your mower for storage at the end of the season or if the mower will not be used for 30 days or more. W ARNING Never store the mower with gasoline in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.
34 CYLINDER(S) • Remove spark plug(s). • Pour one ounce of oil through spark plug hole(s) into cylinder(s). • Install plugs. • T urn ignition key to "ST ART" position for a few seconds to distribute oil. • Replace with new spark plug(s).
35 TROUBLESHOOTING POINTS PROBLEM CAUSE CORRECTION Will not start 1. Out of fuel. 2. Engine not "CHOKED" properly . 3. Engine flooded. 4. Bad spark plug. 5. Dirty air filter . 6. Dirty fuel filter . 7. Water in fuel. 8. Loose or damaged wiring.
TROUBLESHOOTING POINTS PROBLEM CAUSE CORRECTION Engine continues to run when operator leaves seat with attach- ment 1. Faulty operator-safety presence control system. 1. Check wiring, switches and connections. If not corrected, contact an authorized service center/ department.
