2 I. GENERAL OPERA TION • Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual before starting. • Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the machine. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times. • Only allow responsible adults, who are familiar with the in struc tions, to operate the machine.
3 • Be sure the area is clear of bystanders before operat- ing. Stop machine if anyone enters the area. • Never carry passengers. • Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary . Al ways look down and behind before and while back- ing. • Never carry children, even with the blades shut off.

6 CONNECT BA TTERY (See Figs. 2) CAUTION: Do not short battery termi- nals by allowing a wrench or any other object to con tact both terminals at the same time. Before connecting battery , remove metal bracelets, wristwatch bands, rings, etc. Positive terminal must be connected first to prevent sparking from accidental ground ing.

9 AS SEMBL Y TO ASSEMBLE AND INST ALL MULCHER PLUG (See Fig. 8) • Remove spring retainer and pin from handle. • Insert plug into handle. Make sure that the letter "A" on both the plug and handle are on the same side and that they can both be seen from the top when laying on the ground.

13 OPERA TION The operation of any tractor can result in foreign objects thrown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye dam age. Always wear safety glass es or eye shields while op- erating your tractor or per form ing any adjustments or repairs.

15 TO OPERA TE ON HILLS WARNING: Do not drive up or down hills with slopes greater than 15° and do not drive across any slope. • Choose the slowest speed before starting up or down hills.
16 OPERA TION TO ST ART ENGINE (See Fig. 9) When starting the engine for the first time or if the engine has run out of fuel, it will take extra cranking time to move fuel from the tank to the engine. • Be sure freewheel control is in the transmission en gaged position.
17 MULCHING MOWING TIPS IMPORT ANT : FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUIL T -UP GRASS AND TRASH. CLEAN AFTER EACH USE. • The spe cial mulch ing blade will recut the grass clip- pings many times and reduce them in size so that as they fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grass and not be noticed.

21 6 ST AR P A TTERN BL ADE The center of this blade has a 6 star pattern. The bolt at- tach ing this blade has Left Hand threads that loosens by turning ( ) clockwise and tight en by turning ( ) coun ter - clock wise.
22 FIG. 23 TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL (See Fig. 23) Determine temperature range expected before oil change. All oil must meet API service classification SG-SL. • Be sure tractor is on level surface. • Oil will drain more freely when warm. • Catch oil in a suitable container .

26 TO ADJUST STEERING WHEEL ALIGNMENT If steering wheel crossbars are not horizontal (left to right) when wheels are positioned straight forward, remove steer - ing wheel and reassemble per instructions in the Assembly section of this manual. FRONT WHEEL TOE-IN/CAMBER The front wheel toe-in and camber are not adjustable on your tractor .

28 STORAGE Immediately prepare your tractor for storage at the end of the season or if the tractor will not be used for 30 days or more. WARNING: Never store the trac tor with gas o line in the tank inside a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark.
29 TROUBLESHOOTING POINTS Will not start 1. Out of fuel. 1. Fill fuel tank. 2. Engine not “CHOKED” properly . 2. See “TO ST ART ENGINE” in Operation section. 3. Engine flooded. 3. W ait several minutes before attempting to start. 4. Bad spark plug.
30 TROUBLESHOOTING POINTS Engine continues to run 1. F aulty operator-safety presence control system. 1. Check wiring, switches and connections. If not when operator leaves seat corrected, contact an authorized service center/ with attachment clutch department.
