1 Introduction Thank you for cho osing the HUAWEI A scend D1 (U 9500) smartphone. 4 Installing an d Removing a microSD Card Your phon e's memory capaci ty can be expanded by inst alli ng a microSD card. F or installation instructions, refer to th e following diagram. To remove t he microSD c ard: 1. On t he Home scr een, to uch > Settings .
5 Charging the Battery Your mobile phone has an intern al rechargeable batte ry. Do not attempt to open the battery c over and replace th e battery by yourself. To replace the ba ttery, contact Huawei or an authorized service provider. 1. Connect your charger to the USB cable provided .
6 If your phone is p owered on, th e charging icon is d isplayed in the not ific ation ba r whil e the bat tery is chargi ng. When t he ico n changes to , the battery is fully charged .
7 • When you do not need to access the In terne t or t o uplo ad or download data, flick the no tification bar downwa rds to open the notification pane l and touch to disable your data connection.
8 Getting Started Powering Your Phone On or Off • When your phone is off, pre s s and hold to power it o n. If your SI M card i s prot ected by a PIN, you mus t ente r it t o use the phone. • W hen your phone is on, press and hold to display the options menu.
9 • Create or log in to your personal account. • C ustomize your phone setting s. Creating a Google Ac count Availability of Google applicat ions, services, and fe atures may vary according to your c ountry or carrier. Plea se follow local laws and regulations to use them.
10 6. When the Finish cre ating account screen appears, select the Enable web hi story. check box, a nd then touch I accept . 7. Enter the character s that appea r on the scre en, and then touc h Next . 8. When the Enable purcha ses screen appears, touch Skip , or enter the purchase inform ation, and then touch Save .
11 Power off your phon e or switch to Airplane mode where wireless devices are not allowed ac cording to airline regulations. Using the Touc hscreen Touch: Ta p the scr een onc e with y our finger to sel ect an item o r open an application. Touch and hold: Touch and h old on t he current screen or th e input field to display the options menu.
12 Locking and Un locking the Screen Locking the Screen • To lock th e screen w hen the p hone is a ctive, press . • If the phone is idle for a specified period of tim e, the phone automatically locks its screen. On the Home screen, touc h > Settings > Security > Screen lock to select a method for u nlocking the screen.
13 • To open certain applicat ions quickly, drag the icon over the corr esponding icons. Face Unlock You can set your pho ne to unlock by reco gnizing your face. To enable and configur e the settings of the Face Unlock application: 1. On the Home screen, tou ch > Setting s > Sec urity > Screen lo ck > Face Unlock .

Changing the Theme • To sele ct a them e, on t he Home s creen , touch > Theme settings . • Alternatively, you can tou ch > 3D Home to switch to 3D Home theme.

19 Accessing Appli cations and Widgets To access the ap plication list, on the Home screen, touch . From the application list, you can: • Touch a n icon t o open a n appl icati on. • Flick left or right across th e screen to switch between application lists.
20 the shortcut bar, and then drag it to the shortcut bar at the bottom of the screen. If there is no available space, a folder will be cr eated f or th e over lapped i cons. Managing Fold ers on the Home Screen • To create a folder: Drag an application icon onto an other application icon to create a new folde r that contains both icons .
21 Calling To make a call, you ca n manually enter phone num bers on the dialer, touch a number in your contacts list or call log , or use voice control. During a call, you can choose to keep the current call on hold to answer a n incoming call, forw ard the incoming call to your voicemail, or star t a conference call.
22 Using Voice Dialing Calls can be place d using voice dialing. W hen you open the voice dialing application, y our phone's sp eaker will be enab led. Background noise will affect the accuracy of voice d ialing. 1. On the Home screen, touch > Voice Dialer .
23 • Reject the call: Drag to the left. • Reject the call and send a text messag e to the caller: Dr ag upwards. On the Phone screen, touch > Settings > Quick responses to edit the message that will be sent.
24 Operations Duri ng a Call During an active call, you can tou ch any of th e following buttons : • : Ends the call. • : Opens the dialer for yo u to enter anothe r number. • : Activates the speake rs. • : Mutes your microph one. • : Places the current call on hold.
25 2. Ent er the phone nu mber of the next partici pant, or t ouch , to select a phone number. Th e first participant is automatically plac ed on hold w hile this process is car ried out. 3. Once you have connected to the second participant, touch to begi n the co nferen ce call .
26 Call Waiting With the call wa iting function enab led, your phone plays an aler t if someone calls you when y ou are already busy on the pho ne. The caller is also informed that you are bu sy and is prompted to wait until you finish the ca ll.
27 Contacts People enables you to save and mana ge contacts on your phone, including such details as your contacts' phone numbers and addresses. On the Home scr een, touch > People to open People . Importing Contacts from a SIM Card 1. In the contacts list, touch > Manage contacts .
28 Communicating with a Contact Quickly In the contacts list, touch the contact's picture or picture frame (if no picture is assigned to the contact) and touch one of the displayed icons to select the method you want to use to communic ate wit h the co ntact, for ex ample, placin g a call , or sending a text mes sage or an email .
29 Deleting a Contact 1. In the contac ts li st, select the conta ct you want to delete, and then touch > Delete . 2. Touch OK . Managing Contac t Groups Creating a Contact Group 1. In the contac ts li st, touch to display the groups li st. 2. Touch .
30 Adding a Contact to a Group Select a group, to uch to select the desired conta ct, and then touch ADD MEMBERS . Joining Contacts To avoid dupl icate co ntacts i n your li st, joi n two or mor e contact s together to form a single contact. N ote that contacts sto red in the SIM car d cannot be join ed.
31 2. From the displayed options m enu, choos e Export to storage . A message is displayed sho wing the storage location to which the .vcf file of your contacts will be e xported. 3. Touch OK to export your phone's conta cts to the storag e device .
32 Text Input The keyboard layout may var y slightly depending on the input method. Figures in this section are pro vided for your reference only. Using the Onscreen Keyboard Text can be entere d using the ons creen keyboard. T o open the onscreen keyboa rd, touch a text field.
33 Using the Android Keyboard 1 When the text entry m ethod is for lower-case letter s, touch to capitalize the ne xt letter you enter, or touch and hold to capitalize all letters y ou enter. 2 In English input m ode, touch to switch to th e emotic on keyb oard.
34 On the Home screen, touch > Settings > Language & input . Touch to the right of Android keyboard to display the Android keyboard settings screen . To uch Voice input key to set whether the voice input key appears o n the Android keyboard .
35 • : Cut the selected cont ent. Touch and hold the t ext. Drag the grab points to select the text you want to cut. Then touch this button to cut the sele cted text. After t he text is cut, touch a blank area in the text field to display . Move to select where you want to paste the tex t.
36 Messaging On the Home s creen, touch > Messaging to open the message application . Sending a Mes sage 1. On the messag es list screen, tou ch . 2. Enter the recipien t's phone num ber and com pose the message. To attac h a photo o r an audio f ile, t ouch .
37 4. Touch Done to finish compos ing your slidesho w and return to the mul timedi a message screen. To replace an imag e, touch Replace on the slide editing screen. 5. When th e message is r eady to be s ent, touch . Replying to a Messa ge 1. From the messages list, select the messag e you want to reply to.
38 Using Talk Talk is Google's instant m essaging service. Yo u can use it to communic ate in re al ti me with o ther pe ople usi ng Talk on a phone or on the Internet. Opening Talk To open Tal k, on th e Home scr een, tou ch > Talk . Your Talk account is lin ked to the Google account y ou have s et up on your p hone.
39 Setting Notifications for New Instan t Messages When you receive a n instant messa ge, your phone ca n play a ringtone, vibrate, or display a n otification icon.
40 Data Connection Turning On Mobile Data Services 1. On the Home screen, touch > Settings . 2. In the WIRELESS & NETWORKS sectio n, touc h More.. . > Mobile ne tworks . 3. Select the Data enabled check box. • Mobile networks services are p rovided by your network o perator and may incur data traffic cha rges.
41 4. Select the desire d Wi-Fi netwo rk. If you select a se cured network, enter the passwo rd when prompted. • If Wi-Fi and mobile ne twork are both enabled , your phone connects to the W i-Fi network preferent ially and switches to the mobile network when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
42 WPS PIN Co nnection 1. Enable Wi-Fi, and then go to the Wi-F i screen. In the W i-Fi network list, touch the hotspot you w ant to connect to. 2. In the displayed dialog box, select the Show ad vanced options check box. In the WPS section, touch Off , and then select PIN from access point > Connect from the d isplayed options menu.
43 • You cannot sha re your phone’s d ata connectio n via USB tethe ring and access its microSD ca rd as a mass storage device at the same t ime. • Usin g USB tethering will incur data traffic charges. For details, contac t your network opera tor.
44 Controlling Data Usage With Data usage , you can set a data usage cycle and the mobile data limit for this pe riod. You will be notified wh en data usage reache s the set limit. Y ou can also query the da ta usage within a certain period o r by a certain ap plication.
45 On the data usa ge settings screen , touch to display the options menu and y ou can: • Turn on d ata roami ng: Selec t the Data r oamin g check box. • Prevent backgr ound mobi le data t raffi c: Select the Restrict background da ta check box. • View Wi-Fi data usage: Select the Show Wi-Fi usage check box, and a WI-F I tab is displaye d.
46 Bluetooth Your phone support s Bluet ooth, which all ows you t o tran sfer data to and from paired Blueto oth devices. When using Bluetooth, sta y within 10 meters (33 feet) of other Bluetooth devices. Note that obstacles su ch as walls or other electronic equipment may block or interfere with your Bluetooth connection.
47 3. In the WIRELESS & NETWORKS section, touch Bluetooth . Your phone will then scan for other Bluetooth devices within range . 4. From the list of the Bluetooth devices search ed, choose the device you want to connec t, and then follow the onscreen information to pa ir.
48 Email/Gmail Email With Email , you can eas ily send and receive emails. Adding an Em ail Account When using th e Email application for the first time, set up an email ac count as fol lows: ( Note t hat a da ta conn ection is required to send a nd receive emails).
49 Adding an Exchan ge Accoun t 1. On the Home screen, tou ch > Email . 2. If you have already set up an email acc ount, touch > Settings > ADD ACCOUNT > Exchange to add an Exchange ac count. If you ha ve not set up any email accounts, touch Exchange to create an Exchange accoun t.
50 2. Touch or > Reply all to repl y to th e email. You can also touch > Forward to forward the email. Viewing an Ema il In your Inbox , touch the email you w ant to view. You can also tou ch to view more folders. Saving an Em ail Attachment 1. In your Inbox , touch the emai l you want to view.
51 Gmail Gmail is Google's web-based email service. When you first set up your phone, yo u may have to set it up to use an existing Gmail account or create an account. Th e first time you ope n Gmail on your phone, th e Inbox screen is displayed.
52 3. Ente r the email subjec t, and t hen writ e your emai l in the composition field. If you want to send an attachmen t with the email, touch , then Attach file to select the file to be attached. 4. When the em ail is ready to be sent, touch to send the email.
53 Managing Applications Using Play Store Android Play Store provides direc t access to applications and games can be d ownloaded an d installed on your p hone. To open the Play Store , on the Home screen, touch > Play Store . When you open Play Store for the first time, the Google Play Terms of Service window will appear.
54 • On the application details screen , touch to share the application. Uninstalling an Application from Your Phone 1. On the Play Store screen, touch > My apps to vie w your downloaded applications. 2. Tou ch the ap plicat ion you want to un inst all, an d then t ouch Uninst all .
55 Viewing and U ninstalling Applications 1. On the Home screen, tou ch > Setti ngs > Apps > ALL to view the a pplication list. 2. Touch an application to view its details. 3. To uninstall the application, touch Uninstall and follow the onscreen instructions.

59 Maps Maps enables you to find your current loca tion, view real-time traffic conditions (depend ing on availability in you r area), and get detailed directions to your destinations . You can view satellite images, traffic maps , or other kinds of maps of your current or other loca tions.

68 Rotating a Picture 1. When viewing a picture, touch to display th e options menu. 2. Touch Rotate Left or Rotate Right . The picture will b e saved with the new o rientation. Cropping a Picture 1. When viewing a picture, touch > Crop . 2. Use the cropping tool as follows: • Drag the inside of the cro pping tool to move it.
69 Music Player With a built-in music play er, your phone en ables you to play your favorite songs at a ny time. Opening the Media Libr ary On the Home scr een touch > Music+ to access your media l ibrar y. Music+ provides seven tabs to help organize your music: Playlists , Artis ts , Songs , Albums , Genres , and Folders .

Select Cut or Copy in the displayed o ptions menu. 3. Select Internal or SD card , and then touch to copy or move the selected file to Internal or SD card .
79 2. Touch and hold the file y ou want to compress, and then choose Compress from the displayed op tions menu. 3. In the displayed dialo g box, edit the sav e path and name of the file compres sed if necessary . Touch OK to start compressing the file.
80 5. To set your ph one to vibrate when the ala rm goes off, select the Vibrate check box. 6. To na me the alar m, touch Label . 7. To save you r alarm, touc h OK . 81 Weather Clock You can us e Weather Clock to check the date and time at cities around the world, to get th e latest weath er in any city and to share weather info rmation with othe rs. On the Home scr een, touch > Weather Clock . Turn on the GPS and dat a service on your ph one before using Weather Clock .

85 Configuring Phone Settings On the Home scr een, touch > Setting s to conf igure y our phone settings. Setting the Date and Time When your phone is usin g date and time settings automa tically provided by the network , you cannot set the date , time, and time zone manually.
86 • Wallpaper : Change the backgro und picture of the Home screen. • Auto-ro tate scre en : If this function is enabled, when you rotate your pho ne while brow sing a webp age, viewing a picture or comp osing a me ssage, the sc reen display ro tates to automatically fit the new screen orientation.
87 Security Settings Turning On the SIM P IN A Personal Id entification Numb er (PIN) prote cts your SIM card from unauthorized use. If you incorre ctly enter the PIN three consecutive times, the P IN will be blocked an d the phone prompts you to en ter the PIN Un blocking Key (PU K).

If you have set up a Google accoun t, unlock your screen as follows if you forget the screen unloc k pattern: • If you incorrectly draw the unlock pat tern five times , a Forgot pattern? button is displayed.
