2 Getting to know your computer Finding your hardware an d software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. From the Start screen, type c , and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, click Device Manage r .
Component Description (4) HP TrueVision HD Webcam Records video, captur es still photographs, and prov ides access to video conferences and online chat by mea ns of streaming video. To use the webcam, from the Start screen, type c , and then select CyberLink YouCam from the list of applications.
Component Description (2) USB 3.0 charging (powered) port Connects an opti onal USB device. USB charging ports allow yo u to charge connected USB devices. Standard USB ports will not charge all USB devices or will charge using a low current. Some USB devices require power and req uire you to use a powered port.
Left side Component Description (1) Rotate button Rotates the orient ation of the display 90 degrees. (2) USB 3.0 ports (2) Connect optional USB 1.0, USB 2.0, or USB 3.0 devices and provide enhanced USB power per formance for USB 3.0 devices. (3) Hard drive light Blinking: The hard drive is being used.
Back Component Description (1) Stand release button Releases the display stand. (2) Display stand Allows the display to be positioned at different angles. (3) Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and prevent overheating.
Bottom Component Description (1) Memory card reader Reads data from and writes dat a to memory ca rds such as Secure Digital (SD). Labels Identifying the labels The labels on the compu ter provide informat ion you may need when you trou bleshoot problems.
3 Connecting to a network You can explore the glo be and access informat ion from millions of web sites using your comput er and a wired or wireless network connec tion. This chapter will help yo u get connected to that world. Connecting to a wireless network Wireless technology transfers information across r adio waves instead of wires.
Setting up a WLAN To set up a WLAN an d connect to the In ternet, you need the following eq uipment: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cable) (1) and high-sp eed Internet service purchased from an Internet service provider ● A wireless router (2) (purchased separately) NOTE: Some modems have a built-in wirele ss router.
Wireless encryption uses security settings to en crypt and decrypt information that is tran smitted over the network. For more i nfo rmation, go to Help and Suppor t. Connecting to a wired network WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock, fi re , or damage to th e equipment, do not plug a modem cable or telephon e cable into an R J-45 (network) jack.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP comput er as an enterta inment hub to socialize via the webcam, e njoy and mana ge your music, and download and watch movies. Or, to make your comput er an even more powerfu l entertainment center, connect externa l devices like speakers, headphones, or a gaming console.
Connecting headphones You can connect wired he adphones to the hea dphone jack on your co mputer. To connect wireless headpho nes to your computer, follow the device manufactur er's instructions. WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury, adjust the volu me before putting on he adphones, earbuds, or a headset.
5 Navigating using the keyboard and pointing devices Your computer includes an externa l wireless ke yboard and an external wireless mouse fo r easy navigation. After you re move the batte ry tabs from the accessories, they will automatically pair with the computer.
Tapping To make an on-scre en selection, use th e tap function. ● Use one finger to tap an object on the screen to make a selection. Doub le-tap an item to open it. Scrolling Scrolling is useful fo r moving the pointer u p, down, left, or right on a page or image.
Pinching/stretching Pinching and stre tching allows you to zoom out or in on images or text. ● Zoom in by placing two fing ers together on th e display and then move you r fingers apa rt. ● Zoom out by placing two fingers ap art on the displ ay and then move your fingers together.
Right-edge swipe The right-edge swipe reveals the charms, which let you search, share, start apps, access devices, or change setting s. ● Gently swipe your finger in ward from the right edge o f the display onto the screen to re veal the charms. Left-edge swipe The left-edge swipe reveals your ope n apps so that you can switch to them quickly.
Top-edge swipe and bottom-edge swipe The top-edge swipe or bottom-edge swipe allows you to open a list of app s available on your computer. 1. From the Windows Start screen , gently swip e your finger from the top edge or the bottom edge of the display onto the scre en.
Using the keyboard With the keyboard, you can type to select items and perfo rm the same func tions as you do by using touch gestures. The keyb oard also allows you to use action keys to perform specifi c functions.
Using the action keys An action key performs an assigned function. The icon on each of the f1 through f1 2 keys, and the volume (5) , and Sleep (7) keys illustrates the assign ed function for that key. ▲ To use an action key function, press and hold the key.
Icon Key Description Increases speaker volume incre menta lly as long as you hold down the key. Initiates Sleep, which saves your information in the system. The display and other system components turn off and power is conserved. To exit Sleep, briefly press the power button.
Component Description num lock key Controls the function of the integrated numeric keypad. Pre ss the key to alternate between the standard numeric function found on an external keypad ( this function is turned on at the factory) and the navigational functi on (indicated by the di rectional a rrows on the keys).
6 Managing power Initiating Sleep and Hibernation Windows has two power-saving st ates, Sleep and Hiberna tion. ● Sleep–The Sleep state is automatically initiated afte r a period of in activity. Your work is saved to memory, allowing you to resume working very quickly.
NOTE: If you have set a passw ord to be req uired on wake up, you must ente r your Window s password before your wo rk will return to the scree n. Manually initiating an d exiting Hibernation You can enable u ser-initiated Hibernation a nd change othe r power settings and timeouts u sing Power Options in Control Pa nel.
Refreshing your software content with Intel Smart Connect Technology (select models only) When the computer is in the Sleep state, Intel® Smart Con nect Technology periodically causes the computer to exit Sleep.
7 Managing and sharing information Drives are digita l storage devices or solid-state drives that help yo u st ore, manage, sh are, and access information. Your computer has an intern al hard drive that sto res your personal files an d your computer's software and operatin g syst em.
Connecting a USB device CAUTION: To reduce the risk o f damage to a USB conn ector, use minimal force to connect the device. ▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB po rt.
Inserting and removing a memory card To insert a memory card: CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the memory card connectors, use minimal fo rce to insert a memory card. 1. Hold the card label-side up, with the connecto rs facing the computer. 2.
8 Maintaining peak performance Keep your computer a t peak oper ating perfor mance using the practices and tools described in this chapter. Start with routine mainten ance, keep t he equipment clean, and regularly update software . Also pay attentio n to important security issues, in cluding passwords, virus protection, a nd anti-theft measures.

Setting Setup Utility (BIOS) passwords Password Function Administrator password ● Must be entered each time you access Setup U tility (BIOS). ● If you forget your administrator password, you cannot access Setup Utility (BIOS). NOTE: The administr ator password can be used in place of the power-on password.
To be sure that all a vailable updates are in st alled on the computer, obs erve these guidelin es: ● Run Windows Up date as soon as po ssible afte r you set up your computer. From the Start screen, type u , select Settings , and then select Windows Upda te .
9 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the compu ter or an unsuccessful installati on, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external p ower using the AC adapter.
To start HP PC Hardwa re Di agnostic s UEFI: 1. Turn on or restart the computer, quickly press esc , and then press f2 . The BIOS searches thre e places for the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) tools in the following order: a.

Restore and recovery There are several options for re covering your system. Using Windows Refresh fo r quick and easy recovery When your computer is not work ing properly and you need to regain system stability, the Windows Refresh option allo ws you to start fres h a nd keep what is importan t to you. IMPORTANT: Refresh removes any traditional applications that were not or igina lly installed on the system at the factory.
3. Click Change PC setting s in the bottom-right corne r of the scre en, and then select General from the PC settings screen. 4. Scroll the right-side choi ces down to display Remove everything and reinstall Wind ows . 5. Under Remove everythi ng and reinstall Windows , select Get starte d , and follow the on- screen instructions.
To start HP Recovery Manager fr om the HP Recovery partition: 1. Press f11 while the compute r boots. – or – Press and hold f1 1 as you press the power button. 2. Choose your keyboard layout. 3. Select Troubleshoot from the bo ot options menu. 4. Select Recov ery Manage r , and follow the on-scre en instructions.
Follow these steps to remove the HP Recovery partition: 1. From the Start screen, type recovery , a nd then select HP Recovery Mana ger . 2. Select Remove Recovery Partitio n , and then follow the on-screen instructio ns.
11 Troubleshooting Wireless connection problems Some possible causes for wirele ss connection prob lems include the followin g: ● Wireless device is not turned on. ● Wireless device is not installed correctly or has been disabled. ● Wireless de vice encoun tered int erference f rom other d evices.
If entering a secur ity code is not the pr oblem, you may have a corrupted WLA N connection. Man y times, Windows can auto matically repair a co rrupted WLAN co nnection. ● If there is a net work status icon in th e notification area, at the fa r right of the taskb ar, right-click the icon, and then click Tro ubleshoot pr oblems .
Network status icon is not displayed If the network status icon is not disp layed in the notification area af ter you configur e the WLAN, the software driver is either missing or corrupted. A Windows “Device not Foun d” error message may also be displayed.
Computer is not responding Use the Windows Task Manager to close any pr ograms that ar e not responding. 1. Press the ctrl + alt + delet e keys. 2. Click Task Manager . 3. Select any prog ram that is not respon ding, and then click End Task . If closing programs do es not work, restart the computer .
● Replace the batteries in the keyboard and mouse. ● Remove the wireless USB receiver on the botto m of the stand, and then rei nsert it. Re-pair the keyboard and mouse to the rece iver. NOTE: The illustrations below may lo ok slightly different from your keyboa rd and mouse.
4. Press and ho ld the Connect butto n (3) for 5 to 10 seconds, until the LED on the receiver lights up or stops flashing. Audio problems No sound is produced ● Be sure that yo u connected po wered speak ers and that t hey are turne d on. ● Adjust the volume, either on the speakers or through th e computer operating system.
Software problems ● Shut down the comp uter, and then turn it on again . ● Update or reinstall the drivers. See Updating programs and drivers on pa ge 31 . ● Refresh or restore yo ur computer. See Backing up, restoring, and recovering on page 39 .
