4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat -bladed screwd.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their proper location s during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tub es, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist stra p or a foot strap at a grounded workstation . ● When seated, wear a wrist strap conne c ted to a ground ed system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±10% resi stance in the ground co rds.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lo ck size and location du ring removal and rep lacement.

SIM NOTE: This section applies on ly to computer models with WWAN capability. NOTE: The SIM is provided by the en d-user as a security measure for the WWAN module. The SIM should be remove d, placed into a static-dissipa tive container, a nd then replac ed when the co mputer is reassembled.
Optical drive NOTE: All optical drive spare part ki ts include an optic al drive bezel, br acket, and sc rews. Description Spare part number For use in 4540s mo dels DVD±RW and CD-RW Super Multi Doub.
4. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer. Reverse this procedure to install an optical drive. Component replacement procedures 47.
Hard dr ive NOTE: All hard drive spare part kits incl ude a hard drive b r acket and screws. Description Spare part number 750-GB, 7200-rpm hard drive 633252-001 750-GB, 5400-rpm hard drive 634250-001.
3. Pull the Mylar tab on the hard drive (2) toward the side of the computer to disengage the hard drive from the connector, a nd then lift th e hard drive o u t of the hard drive bay. NOTE: Mode l 4540s shown. 4. If it is neces sary to replace th e hard drive cover, lift th e Mylar tab to unlock it.
6. Lift the top of the Mylar cover (2) from the drive, and then remove the cover from the hard drive (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the hard drive. Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is installed in a stacked configuration i n the bottom of the computer.
7. Click the link for the most recent BIOS. 8. Click the Downl oad button, and then follow the on-screen instru ctions. Before removing the memory module, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation , turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
WWAN module CAUTION: The WWAN module and the WLAN module are not interch angeable. Description Spare part number Ericsson F5321 HSPA+ with GPS 668969-001 Sierra MC8355 HSPA/CDMA with GPS 634400-001 Before removing the WWAN module, follow these steps: 1.
4. Remove the WWAN module (3) by pulling the mod ule away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WWAN modules are designed with a not ch to prevent incorrect insertion.
WLAN/Bluetooth combo card The computer uses a card that provides both WLAN and Blu etooth functionality. CAUTION: The WLAN module and the WWAN module are not interchang eable. Description Spare part number Atheros 9485GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and 3012 Bluetoo th 4.
4. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WL AN modules are designed with a notch to prevent incorrect insertion.
Keyboard NOTE: For a detailed list of av ailable keyboard s, see Sequential part number listing on page 30 . Description Spare part number Keyboard for use in 4540s models 683491-xxx Keyboard for use in 4440s/4441s 683657-xxx Before removing the keyboard, follow these steps: 1.
3. For model 4440s/4441 s, remove the two Phillip s PM2.5×6.0 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer. 4. Position the computer right-side up with the front to ward you. 5. Open the computer as far as p ossible. 6. Slide the keyb oard downward toward the palm rest (1) .
8. Rotate the keyboard un til it rests on the palm rest (1) , and then disconnect the keyboard cable by lifting the keyboard connecto r latch (2) , and then d isconnecting the keyboard cable from the system board (3) . 9. Remove the keyboard. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard.
Heat shield Description Spare part number Heat shield for use in 4540s mod els 687696-001 Heat shield for use in 4440s/4441s mo dels 683497-001 Before removing the heat shield, follow these steps: 1.
6. Remove the heat shield from the computer (4) . 7. For model 4440s/4 441s, remove the three Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the heat shield to the computer. 8. Rotate the top of the shield up ward (2) . 9. Lift the heat shield from the co mputer (3) .
Fan Description Spare part number Fan for use in 4540s models 683484-001 Fan for use in 4440s/4441s models 683651-001 Before removing the fan, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation , turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
4. Remove the fan from the system board (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the fan. NOTE: To properly v entilate the computer, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clearance on the left si de of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation.
Heat sink All heat sink spare part kits in clude replacement thermal material. Description Spare part number For use in 4540s mo dels: Heat sink for use in model s with UMA graphics 683489-001 Heat si.
3. Lift the left side of the hea t sink up at an angle (2) , and then pull it away from the side of the computer to remove it (3) . 4. To remove the UMA heat sink, in the order indicated, loosen the four captive Phillips screws (1) that secure the heat sink to the system board.
NOTE: For UMA models, thoroughly clean thermal mate rial from the surface of the system board (1) and heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat si nk. All heat sink and processor spare part kits include thermal material. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the heat sink.
Processor NOTE: All processor spare part kits incl ude replacement th ermal material. Description Spare part number Intel Core i7 processor, Quad Core: 3612QM, 2.1-GHz processor with 6- MB L3 cache 680647-001 Intel Core i5 processors, Dual Core: 3360M, 2.
Remove the proce ssor: 1. Position the computer upside-down. 2. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to turn the processor locking screw (1) one-half turn counterclockwise until you hear a click.
3. Disco nnect the power f rom the computer b y first unplugging the powe r cord from the AC outlet, and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the comput er. 4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 42 ). 5. Remove the following components: a. Bottom door (see Bottom door on page 44 ).
3. For 4440s/4441 models, disconnect the following cables fro m the system board: (1) Function board/Power b utton board cable (2) Finger print reader board cable 4.
5. For 4540s models, remove the follow ing screws that secure th e top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers fr om the corners of t he computer (2) 11 Torx T8M2.
6. For 4440s/4441s models, remove th e following screws that secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 4 rubber screw covers fr om the corners of t he computer (2) 9 Torx T 8M2.
7. For 4540s models, remove the follow ing screws that secure th e top cover to the computer: (1) 2 Phillips PM2.0×2.5 screws from the optical drive bay (2) 3 Phillips PM2.0×2.0 b roadhead screws from the battery bay 8. For 4440s/4441s models, remove th e following screws that secure the top cover to the computer: (1) 3 Phillips PM2.
9. Position the computer upright. 10. Fo r 4540s models, re move the two 2 Torx T8 M2.5 ×6.0 screw s screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 11. For 4440s/4441s models, remove the three 2 Torx T8M2.5×6 .0 screws scre ws that secure the top cover to the computer.
12. Turn the computer upright and ope n it as far as possible. 13. Pry the top of the top cover loose from the computer (1) . 14. Lift the top cover up slightly (2) , en ough not to inadvertently di sconnect the touch pad cable from the system board. 15.
Fingerprint reader board NOTE: Fingerprint assembly spare part kits include cabl e, bracket, and screws. Description Spare part number Fingerprint reader board for use in 45 40s models 683485-001 Fingerprint reader board for use in 4440s/4441s models 683652-001 Before removing the fingerprint r eader board, follow these ste ps: 1.
4. Remove the reader and ca ble assembly from the top cover (4) . Reverse this procedure to in sta ll the fing erprint reader board. Speaker assembly NOTE: In 4540s models, the spea kers are mounte d to the bottom of th e top cover. NOTE: In 4440s/4441s mode ls, the speakers are mounted to the b ase enclosure.
4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 42 ). 5. Remove the following components: a. Bottom door (see Bottom door on page 44 ). b. Keyboard (see Keyboard on page 56 ) c. Top cover (see Top cover on page 67 ) Remove the speaker assembly: 1. If disassembling model 4440s/4441s, skip to step 7.
9. Remove the two broadhead PM2.0 × 3.0 screws (2) that secure the speakers to the computer, and the remove the speakers from the compu t er (3) . Reverse these procedures to install the speaker assembly.
Function board/Power button board assembly Description Spare part number Function board/Power button board assembly fo r use in 4540s models (includes cable) 683486-001 Function board/Power button board for use in 4440s/4441s models (inc ludes cable) 683653-001 Before removing the function board and power butto n board, follow these steps: 1.
4. Remove the power button board from the to p cover. (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the func tion board/power button bo ard assembly. 80 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.
Audio board Description Spare part number Audio board (includes cable) 683475-001 Before removing the audio board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation , turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
Reverse this procedure to in stall the audio board. USB connector assembly The USB connecto r assembly is included in the Cable Kit, spa re part number 6834 77-001 for 4540s models and 6836 40-001 for 4440s/4441s models. Before r emoving the USB co nnecto r assembly, follow these steps: 1.
4. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×4. 5 screws (4440s/4 441s models) (3) that secure the USB connector to the computer. NOTE: Mode l 4540s has only one screw securing the USB connector. Model 4440s/4441s has two screws. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the USB connector assembly.
Battery cable The battery cable is included in the Cable Kit, spare part nu mber 683477-001 for 4540s models, 684640-001 for 4440s/4441s models. Before removing the battery cable, follow these steps: 1.
System board NOTE: All system board spare part kits include replacement th ermal material. Description Spare part number For use in 4540s mo dels with: UMA graphics with WWAN 68349 6-001 UMA graphics .
When replacing the system board, be sure to re move the following components from the defective system board and install on the replacement system board: ● Memory modu le (see Memory modules on page.
6. Lift the right side of the system board up at an angle (2) , and then lift it up and off the computer. 7. For 4440s/4441s models, remove th e two Phillips PM2.
RTC battery Description Spare part number RTC battery 683502-001 Before r emoving the RTC ba ttery, foll ow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation , turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Lift the battery from the syst em board (2) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the RTC battery. Component replacement procedures 89.
Optical drive extension board (4540s models only) Description Spare part number Optical drive extension board 683498-001 Before removing the optical drive exte nsion board, follow these steps: 1.
2. Pull the optical drive extension board straight away from the system board. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the optical drive exten sion board. Component replacement procedures 91.
Hard drive extension bo ard (4540s models only) Description Spare part number Hard drive extension board 683487-001 Before removing the hard drive exte nsion bo ard, follow these steps: 1.
2. Pull the hard drive ex tension board st raight away from the system board. Reverse this procedure to in sta ll the ha rd drive extension board. Component replacement procedures 93.
Power cable The power cable is in cluded in the Cable Kit, spare part number 683477-001 for 454 0s models, 683640-001 for 4440s/4441s models. Before removing the power cable, follow these steps: 1.
3. Lift the power cable assembly from the compu ter (2) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the power cable. Latch assembly NOTE: The Latch Kit includes the latch, bracket, two screws, and spring. Description Spare part number Latch Kit 684635-001 Before removing the latch assembly, follow these steps: 1.
g. Speaker assembly (see Speaker assembly on page 76 ) h. System board (se e System board on pa ge 85 ) NOTE: The latch mechanism in cludes a small spring. Note the location of the spring. Remove the latch assembly: 1. Position the computer ri ght-side up, with th e front toward you.
Display assembly All display assemblies include WLAN antenna transceivers and cables. WWAN models includ e 2 WWAN antenna transceivers and cables. For a list of individual display spare parts, see Display components on page 25 . Description Spare part number For use in silver HP ProBook 4540 s models: ● 39.
4. Position the computer upsi de down. 5. Remove the WWAN antenna cables (1) and the WLAN antenna cable s (2) from the routing path on the bottom of the computer. 6. Position the computer upright. 7. Remove the antenna cable s (1 ) from the routing path (2) in the base en closure.
10. Lift the display assembly straight up and remo ve it (2) . CAUTION: When installing the display a ssembly, be sure that the wi reless antenna cables are routed and a rranged properly. Failure to properly route the ant ennas can result in degrad atio n of the computer's WLAN and WWAN perf ormance.
11. If you need to remove the hinge cove rs from the display hinges, pull the hinges stra ight up and off the di splay to remove the m. Display hinge covers ar e available in the Display Hinge Kit using spare part nu mber 683480-001 for 4540s mode ls and 683643-001 for 4440s/4441 s models.
13. Flex the top (1) of the beze l, the inside edges of the left and right sides (2) , and th en the b ottom (3) of the bezel until it disengages from the displa y enclosure.
15. If it is necessary to replace the webca m module (shown in th e following image) or microphone module from the display enclosure, disconnect the cabl e from the module (1) , and then gently pull the module away from the double-sided tape on the display enclo sure (2) .
17. Remo ve the display hinge s and panel from th e display enclosur e. 18. Di sconnect the dis play panel cable b y rotating the disp lay enclosure (1) , lifting the tape (2) that covers the connector, and disconnecting the cable from the panel (3) .
