Controls and Indicators 6 Connecting Po wer to Multiple-Server Configurations The HP Server temporarily draws a large "inrush current" when first connected to an AC power source. The inrush curren t is much greater than the server's normal operating current and generally , the AC power source can handle the normal inrush current.

11 3 Installing and Configuring Opening and Closing the HP Ser ver tc3100 This section describes how to open and close the f ront bezel, lower bezel, and side pan el of the HP Server tc3100. WARNING Be fore ope ning the se rver , al ways di sconne ct t he po wer c ord and unp lug ca bles.

If the s erver is operating, log off all us ers, back up files, and pow er down the server. 2. Disconnect the pow er cord and any external cables connected to the serv er.

Connect on e end to th e free SCSI connect or (Chann el A) on the sy stem board. See Fi gure 3-9. 4. Route the cable straigh t back to the open sl ot and clip it in place at the top.
Chapter 3 Installing and Configur ing 21 Removing Cold Sw ap Hard Drives 1. If the s erver is operating, log off all us ers, back up files, and pow er down the server. 2. Disconnect the pow er cord and any external cables connected to the serv er. If necessary, label each on e to expedite re-assembl y.
Chapter 3 Installing and Configur ing 22 Installing Hot Swap Hard Drives Use the following steps to install hot swap hard drives: CA UTI ON Protect the drive from static electricit y by leaving it in its anti-static bag until you are ready to ins tall it.

Each processor requires a h eatsink, with its cooling fan atta ched, and a th ermal interface material (grease) between the processor an d the heatsink.

Chapter 3 Installing and Configuring 44 SCSI Configuration Utilit y The HP Server uses the Symbios SCSI Co nfiguration Utilit y to verify or modify the embedded SCSI controller settings for the devices connected to the two SCSI channel connectors on the syste m board.
45 4 Diagno stics When the s erver boots, a s eries of tests are dis played on t he screen. The num b er of tes t s display ed depends on the configu ration of the server. The following are th e kinds of errors a user migh t get with the HP Server: · Built-in diagnostic Error Messages.

Chapter 4 Diagnostics 49 HP Server DiagTools The purpose of hardware di agnostic s o ftware is to provide tools for check ing hardware problem s. By design , diagnostic software executes simple tests of each hardware com po nent. Usually, such tests assure that hardware is not th e source of server problems .
Chapter 4 Diagnostics 50 About E rror M essages A hexadecimal num ber designates each error m e ssage reported by Dia gTools; a short n o te on the ty pe o f error; and a list of on e or more steps the user can take in respon se. When you run a test, it exercises many aspects of th e hardware, so the num ber of possible error m essages exceeds 300.

53 5 Error Messages Power-On Self Test (POST) Error Codes Error mes sages (POST Codes) are encoun tered if an erro r condition occurs during the boot process of th e HP Server tc3100. A ll codes and thei r respective des criptions are li sted in the following tabl e; all th e codes may not apply to your server.

6 Troublesho oting Preventive Maintenance Procedures Refer t o the following t able for preventi ve maintenance procedu res used for the HP Tower S erver tc3100.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing · HP DiagTools Utilit y - An easy-to-use hard w are diagnostic fo r HP Server verification and rapid troubles hooting. Use this image to copy DiagTools to two (2) f lexible diskett es from the HP Server Navi gator CD-RO M.

Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 7. Use only HP-provided drivers for any HP devices used in th e HP Server. This includes using HP drivers for the initial installation of any NOS (Network Oper ating System) that is supported on th e specific HP Server. 8. Check all cable and pow er connections, including those in the rack .
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 3. Locate and download th e latest HP Server BIOS to the P C’s hard drive. Find the file that was downl oaded and double- click on the fil e and follow the instructions to extract the f ile to the floppy disk. This dow nloaded BIOS on the disket te becomes th e BIOS update dis kette.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing o Incorrect System Configuration 8. Press F2 to run the BIOS Setup Utilit y. 9. Make any co nfi gurati on c han ges re quir ed. 10. Choose the Exit option a nd save the changes to save the configuration and exit the Setup Utility.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 4. If a disk array controller is being used and the NOS is ins talled on a hardw are array/container, v erify that the array/con tainer is in an optimal state by accessing a nd checking the dis k array controller’s s etup utility during startup.

If the fans (sys tem, power supply , a nd processor heat s ink) are not audible and the above s teps are veri fied: a. Disconn ect the power cord/ s for fiv e minut es in order to reset the pow er supply’s circ uitry.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing A blink i ng green pow er LED indicates th e HP Server tc3100 is in a s leep mode. These are basic gu idelines for troublesh ooting video issu es. They are arrang ed in such an order as to be us ed progressi vely. The HP Server should n ot be re-populated w ith components until video is produced.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing Configuration Problems The Configurat ion Cannot Be Saved an d the Battery Loses Power o r the Configur ation Information is Frequent l y Lost WARNING T here is a danger of ex p losion if the battery is incorrectly installed.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 8. Examine th e printer f or a paper jam. 9. Run the printer self-test. Re fer to the printer’s manual for ins tructions. 10. Ensure the correct port setting when configuring the printer. 11. Run the system BIOS Set up Utility (<F2> on POST when prompted) to verify the I/O port status.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing Flexible Disk and Flexible Disk Drive Problems If th e HP Server cannot boot from , write to, or f ormat a flexible di sk, do th e following : 1. Try bootin g from a known good f lexible disk. 2. If th ere is a bootable C D in the CD-RO M drive, remove i t.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 4. After the disk is rem oved, start the HP Server and try to open the drawer again with th e Eject Button or soft ware co mmand . If the drawer s till will not open, call HP Customer Support for fu rther assistance before replacing any parts.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 2. Ensure that the SCSI boot controller’ s BI OS is enabled. Check this f rom the SCSI Setup Utilit y. To access this utility, en ter CTRL C when a Symbios co ntroller banners on POST or CT RL A whe n an Adaptec controller ban ners on POST.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 2. Run Di agTools and veri fy: a. SCSI Ids and any relevant switch settings. b. SCS I bus inform ation. 3. If an accessory board w as added recently, check f or a resource conflict between the new board and an existing accessory boards.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing 9. Check the system BIOS version to ensure it is the m o st recently issued vers ion. The most recent version is listed on HP’s website. 10. Verify t he SCSI bus is terminated at both en ds. By default, HP Server SCSI controllers in extern al enclosures are terminated.
Chapter 6 Troubleshoot ing Contact the HP Custom er Support Center for fu rt her troubleshooting as sistance if n eeded. Network Int erface Card (embedded or PCI) Problems If the HP Server cannot connect to the network and all the LEDs are lit on the NIC: 1.

81 7 Replaci ng Parts Safety Information Follow the proced ures listed below to ensure safe handli ng of components and to prevent harm to both you and the server: · Use an anti-static wrist strap and a g rounding mat, such as those included in the Electrically C onductive Field S ervice Groun ding Ki t (HP 9300-115 5).
