1 Introduction HP Compaq thin clients wi th Microsoft Windows CE are easy to depl oy, manage, and secu re, and include powerful fe atures for mainstream business use.
Image updates HP provides periodic upda tes to the image for thin clients. Check the HP support site for important documentation that provides spe cific informatio n for your image version. Yo u can find su pport documentation at: http://welcome.h p.com/ country/us/en/support.
2T h e D e s k t o p The t5530 thin client with Micros oft Windows CE us es an explorer shell (desktop) that resembles the typical Windows desktop to make it look familiar and easy to use. T he desktop includes a taskbar, Start menu, shortcut icons, and a background image.
Display To change the d isplay settings, right-click o n the desktop and select Proper ties . You can change the following: ● backgrou nd image ● appearance ● resolution and color quality setting s ● screen saver NOTE: You must reboot for chang es to the display setti ngs to take effect.
Start Menu To open the Start menu, click the Star t button on the ta skbar. The Start menu pr ovides access to software and settings, allows yo u to run commands, and allows you to shut down the system. Icons The icons on the deskto p provide shortcuts to softwa re and connecti ons.
3 HP Thin Connect HP Thin Connect allows you to: ● Manage user accounts. ● Add, edit, and d elete connections. ◦ Terminal emulation ◦ Microsoft Remote De sktop Client (R DP) connections ◦ HP PC Session Allocation Client (PC SAM) ◦ Internet Explorer ◦ Citrix ICA connections ● Assign connec tions to user s.
The HP Thin Co nnect window i ncl udes the following fe atures: ● Connection display area : Lists all connections assigned to the user currently logged o n to the terminal. For e ach connection, the d isplay shows the name, type, and status of the connection.
Creating user accounts You can set up termi nal operator user accou nts in the Security window, which you can access e ither from the Thin Co nnect Advanced windo w or from Control Panel. The system comes with three default accounts: ● Administrator ● Guest ● User You can use the defa ult accounts as templates for new accoun ts.
3. Select the Users tab, and then cl ick Add to create a new user account. Creating user accounts 9.
4. On the General tab, type a name for the new u ser account in the Na me box. Valid characters for the Name box include: A - Z, a - z, 0 - 9. (.)&^%$# !~‘’{}_-. Maximum length is 20 characters. 5. Type a password for th e new user in the Password bo x.
a. In the Based on list, select the accoun t to use as a template. b. Click OK to save your settings and return to the Add New User window. c. To add another user, click Add another user . This option allows you to quickly add new use rs. 9. To select permissions for the new account, select the Permissions tab on the Add New User window.
a. Select the items in the permissions list that you want to allow the user to access. If the user is an Administrator, select User is Administ rator to provide full a ccess. If you select User is Administrator , you cannot select or clear items in the list.
Adding connections To add a conne ction in HP Thin Con nect: 1. In HP Thin Connect, click Add . 2. In the Choose type dialog b ox, select the type of connec tion you want to create, and then click OK . A Wizard or setup dialog fo r the connection type displays.
NOTE: Renaming a conn ection effectively de letes it from all user accounts. Deleting connections To delete a connection in HP Thin Connect: ▲ Select the connec tion, and then click Delete . The connection is deleted fr om all user connec tion lists.
● User : This list includes al l users accounts associ ated with the system. To config ure connections for a user , select the user from th e list. ● Security : Allows you to access the Security window , where you can create and configure user accounts.

To config ure Thin Connec t to automatically start u p, see Auto starting HP Thin Connect on page 18 . ◦ Persistent : Determines whether the system will attempt to reconnect when a connection fails.
To designate a conne ction as primary or secondary: 1. In the HP T hin Connec t window, click Advanced . 2. On the Assign Connections tab, select the a ppropriate user from the User list. 3. Select the conne ction from the user’s conn ection list that you want to make primary.
6. In the Persistent column, if the entry for th e selected connection is No , click on No to change it to Yes . 7. To arrange the o rder of connections, select a co nnection and click the up and down arrows. Secondary connections a re associated with th e fi rst primary connectio n above them in the list.
NOTE: Before setting a terminal to run in Kiosk mode, you must define a user and crea te a connection. For more information, re fer to “Creating user accounts” and “Connections”.
8. Click Apply to save your changes, or click OK to save your changes and exit the Advanced windo w. 9. Log off the u ser for all changes to take effect.

4 Control Panel This chapter provides an overvi ew of the programs in the Control Panel an d provides step-by-step instructions to perform certain tasks. You can use ma ny of the programs for lo cal administration, while you use others, such as DHCP Options and SNMP, fo r remote administration.
Accessibility The Accessibility dialog box allows you to configure the terminal with 508 Accessibili ty features. Accessibility options are ava ilable for the keyboard, soun d, display, and mouse.
Boot Settings The Boot Setting s dialog box allows you to configure the thin client boot order. Boot Device Ord er : Select to enable the device to which the thin client bo ots. Use the up a nd down arrows to the left of the list to chang e the position of a selecte d device.
Certificates The Certificates dialog box allows you to import, store, and view security certificates . Certificates an d certificate authorities ensure that an SSL connecti on is made to the intended secure serve r. Certificate information is exchang ed between the terminal b row ser and the secure server when estab lishing a connection.
Date/Time The Date/Time Properties dia log box allows you to se t the date a nd current time, select the appropriate time zone, and enable a utomatic clock adjustment for daylight savings time for the terminal. ▲ Select the appropriate date and time information, and then click Ap ply .
To change p ort values: 1. Double-click on the name of th e option to chang e. A dialog box displays with a list of all valid options. 2. Select the appropriate va lue fr om t he list, and then click OK . Dialing The Dialing Prop erties dialog box allo ws you to: ● Add or select a dialing location.
Display The Display Properties dialog box allows you to co nfigure the background imag e, appearance scheme, screen resolution, color qu ality, refresh frequency, a nd screen saver. NOTE: You can also access th e Display Properties dialog bo x by right-clicking on the de sktop and selecting Properties.

Global ICA Client Settings The Global ICA Client Settings dialog box all ows you to configure ICA default client setti ngs. Keyboard Shortcuts The Key board Shortc uts tab allows you to con figure hot key comb inations that you ca n use during active ICA sessions.
Preferences The Preferences tab allows you to set color pr eferences during an ICA se ssion. The Preferences tab contain s the following: ● Serial Number : Type the serial number o f the ICA Client software exactly as it appears on the serial number card.
Server Location The Server Location tab allows you to view/add Citrix servers on the netw ork that ha ve ICA connect ions configured. The Server Location tab contains the following: ● Server Group : Select whether the servers in the serve r ad dress list belong to your Primary, Backup 1, or Backup 2 gr oup.
In the SSL/TLS Relay section, type the relay address an d port for the Socket Security Laye r (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. If the firewall u ses address remappi ng, you must configur e the client to use th e alternate ad dress returned by the data collector by sele cting Use alternat e address thr ough firewal ls .
What do you need to have? ● An HP thin client CE un it that co ntains the latest HP provided image. ● An HP-approved USB drive key. 1. Once you launch th e ThinState Capture too l from within the Control Pa nel, you are presen ted with the following screen .
Thin State Deploy To perform a Thin State deployment: 1. Set the boot order in the F10 System Bios to USB boot (if necessary). 2. Attach the USB flash drive to the thin c lient unit you wish to deploy the captured image to , and then power on the unit.
● Advanced : Allows you to configure mu ltiple internet options, including op tions for accessibility, browsing, multimedi a, and security. ● Popups : Allows you to configure h ow the browser ha ndle s pop-ups, including blocking, notificatio n when pop-ups are b locked, and exceptions that allow popups from specific sites.

To set the termin al up as a print server: 1. Select Enable Printer . 2. Type the Printer Name and Netwo rk Port . 3. Select the appropriate printe r po rt from the list. If you select a COM port, you have the option of configuring the seri al port by cl icking Configure and typing the approp riate parameters.
Refer to the device instructions th at sh ipped with the mo dem, or located on the manufacturer Web site , for listings of modem “AT” comm ands available for the modem . Mouse The Mouse Propertie s dialog box allows you to se t the mouse d ouble-click sensitivity for speed and physical distance between clicks.
● VPN (L2TP) ● Ethernet (PPPoE) Dial-up connection You can use a dial-up modem w ith the thin client to access a dial-up server. This method pro vides two ways to access the enterprise intranet: ● An enterprise dial-up server connects di rectly to the enterprise intranet.
Port Lock The Port Lock dia log box allows you to enable or d isable COM 1 ports, LPT ports, and USB mass sto rage devices. To enable a port, se lect the appropriate check box, and then click OK .
RDP/ICA Printers The RDP/ICA Printe rs dialog box allows you to a d d local RDP/ICA printer confi gurations and modify existing RDP/ICA printer co nfigurations. This configur ati on enables the te rminal to print from an RDP/ ICA server session to a local pr inter.
3. In the next wizard panel, sel ect the printer manufacture r and model. If the desi red printer is not listed, select User Defined , and then click Next . CAUTION: It is critical that the mode l name entered in step 3 ma tches EXACTLY with the model name of the driver installed on the terminal server.
Modifying an existing printer configuration To modify an exist ing printer configu ration in the Print ers dialog box: 1. Double-click the desired printer icon or select the icon and click Properties . The Printer Properties dialog box displays. 2. Make any necessa ry modificati ons, and then click OK to save.
Security The Security dialog b ox allows you to control vario us terminal functions related to security and t erminal operator accounts. Enabling security System security i s enabled by defa ult, which forces us ers to log in if the automatic logi n feature is not enabled.
Creating a user account To create a new secu rity account for a termin al operator, select the Users tab on the Security dialog box. This tab lists all the oper ator accounts and sh ows which accoun ts are set up with Administ rator security privileges and which accounts are enabled.
To add and assig n rights to an accepted community: 1. Click the Security tab. 2. Click Add in the Accepted Commu nity Names section . The Community Configuration dial og is displayed. 3. Type the name of the community in the Community Name box. 4. Select the rights to the community in the Rights list, and then click OK .
To add SNMP packet s: 1. Click the Security tab. 2. Select Accept SNMP Packets from these hosts. 3. Click Add in the SNMP packets sectio n . The SNMP Configuration di alog displays. 4. Type the host na me or IP address, and then click OK . 5. Repeat steps 1 an d 2 to add more hosts.
To configure SNMP: 1. On the Agent tab, type the physical location of the terminal in the Locatio n box. 2. Type the name of the con tact person responsible fo r the terminal in the Contact box. 3. Assign the terminal to a commun ity by selecting a comm unity from the Commun ity Name list.
5. If you want to ad d or change SN MP security settings, click the Security tab. 6. To enable an a uthentication failure trap, select Enable Authentication F ailure Trap . 7. Select the hosts from which SNMP pa ckets may b e accepted. Choose either Accept SNMP packets from any ho st or Accept SNMP packet s from these hosts .
SNTP Client The SNTP dialog box a llows administrators to synchronize the clocks on all thin clients. Administrators can set thin clients to automatically synchroniz e with an Internet time ser ver or wit h a boot serve r. Synchronization can oc cur only when your computer is connected to the Internet.
System The System Properties dia log box allows yo u to vi ew manufa cturer and p roduct info rmation, network settings, and copyri ght information. You can also re set the terminal to defaul t factor.
device name is “HP” follo wed by th e MAC address. If the device is reset to fact ory defaults, the device name reverts to the factory d efault name. This tab also displays ne twork settings and provide s a Configure Network C ard button that allows you to adjust the sp eed/duplex for the card.
For more info rmation about ex porting registry settings, see Chapter 6, Registry Import/Export on page 72 . System Update The System Update dial og box allows you to define the means by wh ich you update the terminal image. The feature update s only the ope rating system, The BIOS is not upda ted.

6. Select Check for update s at startup to cause th e unit to check the entered FTP site for software updates. 7. Click Connect to connect to th e server you configure d in the previous steps. The Conne ct button is not available until you e nter valid information for the server.
View or Remove Programs The View or Remove Progra ms dialog box allows you to view or remove software program s currently installed on the terminal. To remove a program, select the program from the list and click Remove .
Settings for VNC Server Configure VNC Server on your thin clien t by selecting the following: Check Box Explanation Prompt local user to accept incoming connections The default should be ENABLED and Au to Accept should be ENABLED Enable Viewer Cur sor This setting allows the viewer to show its cursor on the scr een while moving the mouse.
5 Programs and Add-ons This chapter provides detailed in formation about pr ograms and add-on programs for the CE 5.0 image. You can download add-ons from the HP Su pport Web site. Add-ons are programs th at you can add and remove fr om a thin client.
Programs ThinPrint The following steps illustrate how to set up ThinPrint over TCP/IP. Th inPrint can also be used for ICA/ RDP sessions, provide d a TCP/IP connection exis ts between server and client. You must set up ThinPrint on the serve r before attempting any ThinPrint jobs.
3. Click the Assignment tab to set up th e printer. The defaul t printer name and p ort appear as LPT1:LPT1. 4. Click Add local port to enter a ne w printer name and po rt; for example, HP_LaserJet_1150 . You can change th e printer name by selectin g the printer and clicking the Edit entry button.
5. Select the printer you just creat ed. 6. Click OK to close the ThinPrint screen. 7. Re-open ThinPrint. 8. Select the printe r you created from the Current printer list. 9. Click OK to save settings. 10. Create an ICA or RDP connection in HP ThinConnect.
12. Log in to the server. Programs 63.
13. Open a any Word document and click File > Print . 14. Select the printer from the list. The display format is printer name#compu ter name . (For example, hp_Las erJet _1150 #HP00 0AE495 D355 :1 ) 15. Click OK to print the document. ThinPrint Network Printer 1.
NOTE: The pr inter name must match the pri nter name set up on the server. 4. If configuring an LPD Printer: a. Select LPD Printer . b. Type the Printer name . c. Type the pr inter’s IP addres s in the Printer address field. NOTE: The pr inter name must match the pri nter name set up on the server.
8. Open ThinPrint and select the printer you just added from the drop-down list. 9. Log in to ICA or RDP. 10. Open any Word document. and then select Print .
Deleting a connection To delete an establishe d connection: 1. Right-click on the connection and select Delete Co nnection . or Select the connection and press the Delete key. 2. Click Yes to delete the connection. NOTE: Deleting a connecti on through HP Co nnections for Citr ix Software a lso deletes the connection from HP Thin Connect.
● Local-printer redirection so server appl ications can print locally to the client device. ● Local audio p layback so server applications can di rect audio to the client device or play at the Terminal Se rver. ● Local-port redirecti on so server applications c an use paralle l and COM ports of the client device .
5. In the Connect To box select the port to which t o connect. 6. Click Connect to establish the conne ction. The Connect button is not available until the connection is properly configured. To associate a TEC with a user accoun t: 1. Start > Programs > HP Thin Connect .
Messenger 5.0 The Windows Messenger 5 .0 add-on adds the following function ality: ● Support for cate gorizing contacts into groups and for dragging and dropping contacts. ● User Interface (UI) improvements, including syst em tray notifications (known as alerts) for incoming messages, and ToolT ip support.
4. Configure the wireless network key and IEEE information, as required. 5. Click OK . The icon in the taskbar indicates a n active wireless co nnection.
6 Registry Import/Export ATTENTION : When deploying an image an d settings from a “source” or “master” thin clien t to a “target” thin client, please make sure that so urce/master and target thin clients have identical hardware.
Exporting and importing a registry To export a r egistry: 1. Open the Deployme nt Server Console . 2. Select CE_RegExport from the Job window and drag and dr op the Job to the source u nit under the Computers window. This copie s the source computer’s re gistry and pr epares it fo r import.
