1 Getting started Use this secti on to get famil iar with camera cont rols, set up your dig ital camera for use, and begin taking pict ures. Charge the batteries Charge the batteries usin g the charger that came wit h your camera. 1. Plug the charger in to an e lectrical outlet, t hen insert rechargeable NiMH b atteries into the charge r as shown.
Set the region Along with the Langu age setting, the Region setting determines the default date format and the format of the video signal for di splaying camera images on a television when conn ected through an option al HP Photosmart Pre mium dock or wireless dock base (see Using the Setup Menu on page 31 ).
Note Once you install a me mory card, all new i mages and video clips are stored on the card, rather than i n internal memory. To use int ernal memory and view images stored th ere, remove the m emory card.
About the HP Photosmart Software The CD that came w ith your camera contains the fo llowing versions of HP Photo smart Software: ● HP Photosmart Premier Soft ware (for Windows XP and x64 systems with at least 128 MB of RAM).
2 Taking pictures and recording video clips Live View allo ws you to frame pictures and vi deo clips in the Imag e Display. To activat e Live View , press until appears brief ly in the upper right corne r of the Image Display. The Live View di splay looks like t his: 1 Shooting mode indicato r.
Recording video clips 1. Press until appears bri efly in the upper rig ht corner of the I mage Display. This indicates you are in Live View . 2. Frame the subj ect. 3. Press and release the Video butto n. 4. To stop re cording video, press and release the Video button again.
Optimizing focus When the camera cannot a uto focus, the focu s brackets turn red. This in dicates the picture may be out of focus because th e subject is out of the fo cus range or the scene has low cont rast.

To select a shooting mode, press while in Live View , use to highlight a shooting mode, then press . Auto Mode (Default)— For taking good shots quickly, when you do not have time to select a speci al shooting mode. Self-Timer —For capturing images o r recording video after a 10-second delay (see Using the Self -Timer mode on pag e 16 ).
4. The next steps depe nd on whether you are taking a still pictu re or recording a video clip. a. For still pictu res, press the Shutter butt on halfway down to lock focus and exposure. When the focu s brackets turn green, press th e Shutter button all the way down.

Exposure Com pensation You can use Ex posure Compensati on to override the came ra's automatic exposure setting. Exposure Compensation is useful in scenes that contain many light objects (like a white object ag ainst a light background) or many da rk objects (like a black object against a dark backgroun d).
3 Reviewing images and video clips You can review an d manipulate ima ges and video clip s in Playback as described here. For information a bout enhancing ima ges, see Using the Design Gall ery Menu on page 22 . 1. Press until appears bri efly in the upper rig ht corner of the I mage Display.
Deleting images To delete a displ ayed image during Playback : 1. Press . 2. Use to select an option, then p ress . – Cancel —Ret urns to Playback wit hout deleting the d isplayed image. – This Image —Delet es the image or video clip. – All Except Favo rites —Deletes all im ages except those tagged a s F avorites .
4 Using the Design Gallery Menu You can use the Design Gallery features to enhance your capture d images. 1. While in Playback , use to scroll to a n image, then press . 2. Use to hi ghlight the Desi gn Gallery Menu tab. 3. Use to highlight an opt ion, then press and follow the o n-screen instructions.
Applying artistic effects Tip If you plan t o apply artistic ef fects or modify colo rs, do so before add ing a border. Apply Artist ic Effects allows you to cre ate a copy of a selected image and apply creative effects to the copy . To apply artistic effect s: 1.
Add Border s allows you to add one or more prede fined borders to the displa yed image. To ad d a border: 1. Use to select Add Borders , then press . 2. Use to select a border type and pre view the effect it has o n the image. – Cancel —Ret urns to the Design Gallery Menu without saving changes.
5 Transferring and printing images You can transfer im ages and video cl ips with or wit hout the HP Phot osmart Software that came with your camera. However, t he HP Photosmart Sof tware has several features for transferring and manag ing your images and al so guides you through the transfer process.
Connecting to the comp uter 1. Turn off the camera , connect the camera and com puter using the USB cable t hat came with your camera, then tu rn on the camera. – On Windows computers, the camera appears as a device i n Explorer, allowing you to copy images from th e camera to the computer.
there are no printer e rror messages. 2. Verify that the camera's USB Configuration is set to Digital Camera (see USB Configur ation under Using the Set up Menu on page 31 ). 3. Connect the ca mera and printer using th e USB cable that came with your camera, then turn on the camera.
6 Using HP Photosmart Express With HP Photos mart Express , you can tag images as Favori tes (see Tagging i mages as Favorites on page 29 ), select still images in your camera to print automatica lly (see Selecting images f or printing on page 29 ), or buy prints online (see Buying prin ts online on page 30 ).
3. Highlight Share Menu Setup... , then press . Connect the camera to your computer using the USB cable that came with your came ra. Follow the instructions in the Share dialog box to set up destinations in yo ur camera. 4. Disconnect the camera fro m the computer, then press to verify that the new destination s are now in the camera.
3. Use to display an im age you want to mark for printing, then press to display the Print sub- menu. 4. Use to specify the number of copies to p rint (up to 99), then press . To deselect Print , select Print again, set the n umber of copies to 0 , then press .
7 Using the Setup Menu The Setup Menu allows you to set preference s for the camera’s behavior. 1. While in Live View or Playback , press , then use to highlight . 2. Use to highlight a me nu option, then press to display the menu opt ion’s sub-menu.
8 Troubleshooting Use this section to find informat ion on: ● Resetting the camera (see Re setting the camera on page 32 ) ● Possible prob lems and solutions (see Problems and solutions on page 32 ) Resetting the camera If your camera does not resp ond when you press butto ns, reset the camera.
The camera does not turn on when I connect to AC powe r, then disconnect, the n reconnect. ● Insert batteries into the camera. ● The optional HP AC power adapter could be malfunctioning. Try connecting to a different compat ible HP AC power ada pter.
My image is too bright. ● Turn the flash off (s ee Set ting the flash on page 15 ). ● Move back from the sub ject and use zoom. ● Adjust Exposure Compensation (see Exposu re Compensati on under Using the Capture Menu o n page 17 ). My image is too dark.
For best image quality, tu rn off the camera when not u sing. Always store the camera in a cool place. My camera stalls when establish ing a connection to the comp uter. ● Ensure that the USB cabl e is properly connected to th e camera and computer.

A Managing batteries Your camera uses two AA batteries, either Alka line, Photo Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Alkaline batteries provide far le ss battery life than either Photo Lithium or NiMH batteries. Top points about batteries ● Fully charge NiMH batteries overnight before using them for the first time.
● Immediately discontinue use of a ba ttery if, while using, charging, or storing the battery, the battery emits an unusual smell, feels excessively hot (note that it is normal for the ba ttery to feel warm), changes color or shape, or appears abnormal in any other way.
For Minimum, Maximum, and Average numbers, four pi ctures are taken p er session with at least a 5 minute break between sessions. In addition: ● The minimum number of shots is obtained with extensive use of Live View (30 seconds per picture), Playback (15 seconds per picture), and Flash On .
