2 Taking pictures and recording video clips You can take pictures w hen you are in Picture Cap ture and you can record vid eo when you are in Video Record . Slide to to take picture s or to to record video clips. Th e Image Displa y resembles the following: 1 • Picture Capture indicator.
Recording video clips You can record a video cli p when the camera i s set to Vide o Record . 1. Slide to . 2. Frame the subjec t in the Image Display.
Focusing on the subjec t When you pre ss the Shutter but ton halfwa y down, the camera searches for focus within the fo cus brackets. When it finds focus, the fo cus brackets turn green. If the focus brackets do not fram e your subject, use Focus Lock (see “ Using Focus Lock” on page 11 ).
Using Focus Lo ck Use Focus Lock to focus on a subject that i s not in the center of t he picture, to capture action shots more quickl y by pre-focusing in the area w here the action will occur, or to focus in low light or l ow contrast situat ions. 1.
Optical zoom Optical zoom moves the le ns between wide angle (1x) a nd telephoto (3x). While in Picture Capture or Video Record , use the buttons on the Zoom lever to control zoom. Press to zoom in and to zoom out. NOTE: You can set the opti cal zoom to the posit ion you want just before recording video cl ips.
3 Setting options for taking pictures and recording video clips Your camera's default se ttings work well f or most shooting situat ions. For some situations, how ever, the featur es described in this cha pter can improve t he pictures you take and the video clips yo u record.
Using the Picture Capture and Video Record menus The Picture Capture and Video Record menus allow you to adjust camera settings that af fect the characteristics of the pictures and video clips you capture.
Image Quality ( only)—Sets resolution and co mpression for images. The greater the number, the higher the resolution. Th e setting remains in effect until it is changed, even when you turn off the ca mera. • 8MP Best —For enlarging or printing images greater than 41 x 51 cm ( 16 x 20 in).

Using the Burst setting Burst allows you to take two or more pictures as quickly as possi ble when you press and hold the Shutter butt on all the way dow n. 1. Deleting images To delete a displ ayed image durin g Playback : 1. Press . 2. Use to select an option, then press . • This Image —Deletes the i mage or video clip. • All Except Favo rites —Deletes all images except those tagged as Favor ites .
Using the Playback Menu 1. While in Playback , press . 2. Use to highlight an optio n. 3. Use to select an image or video clip, press , and follow any on-camera instructions. NOTE: To hear audi o associated with video cl ips, transfer them to your computer (see “ Transferring an d printing i mages” on page 25 ).
Tagging image s as Favorites Tagging an image as a Favorite allow s you to quickly select the group of ima ges tagged as Favorites for printing or viewin g as a group. 1. While in Playback , use to scroll t o an image, then press . 2. Use to h ighlight Favorites , press , then press again to tag the displayed image .
5 Using the Design Gallery Menu You can use the Design Gal lery features t o enhance your capt ured images. 1. While in Playback , use to scroll to an image, then press . 2. Use to highlight Design Gallery , then press . 3. Use to highlight an option, the n press and follow any on-camer a instruction s.
Modifying colors TIP: If you plan to modify colors, do so before addi ng a border. Modify Color allows you t o apply color schemes t o the displayed image. To modify colors: 1. Use to select Modify Color , then press . 2. Use to sele ct a color scheme and preview the effect it has on the image .
1. Use to select Crop , then press . 2. Use to select a crop orientation and pre view the effect it has on the image. • Landscape (Default)—Horizonta lly crops the displayed ima ge to a 3:2 aspe ct ratio (one third wider than tall). • Portrait —Vertical ly crops the displayed image to a 2:3 aspect rati o (one-third taller than wide).
6 Transferring and printing images Regularly transferring im ages to your computer and delet ing them from the memory card will reduce the time it t akes to turn on your camera, to revi ew images, and to tran sfer images. You can tra nsfer pictures and video clips with or withou t the HP Photosmart Software that came with your camera.
3. Connect the camera and computer usin g the USB cable that came wi th your camera. 4. Turn on the camera. When the Image Di splay indicates that the ca mera is connected to the computer, follow the instructions on th e computer screen. For more information, see the Help feature in the HP Photos mart Software.
Using a memory card reader You can put your camera’s opti onal memory card i nto a (separately pu rchased) memory card reader. Some computers and HP Photos mart printers have built-in memo ry card slots which act as a memo ry card reader.

8 Using the Camera Setup Menu The Camera Setup Menu allows you to set preferences for the cam era’s behavior. I have to recharge the Ni MH batteries freque ntly. • New batteries or ba tteries that have not been charg ed recently must be rech arged to reach full capa city. • If you have not used the bat teries for two months or lo nger, recharge them. • For tips on conserving ba ttery life, see “ Ext ending battery lif e” on page 41 .
My image is blurry. •U s e Focus Lock (see “ Usin g Focus Lock” on page 11 ). • Use a tripod t o hold the camera stea dy, or improve l ighting condit ions. • Use Steady Photo shootin g mode (see Steady Photo under “ Using the Picture Capture and Vid eo Record menus” on p age 14 ).
I have two memory cards that are the sa me size, but one stores many more pictures than the othe r. • Your memory card may contain f iles that are n ot images or videos recognized by the camera. Save any data on the memory ca rd that you want to keep, then format the memory card (see “ Install and format an optio nal memory card” on page 6 ).
Video recording ter minates abruptly and the video will n ot play back. • Remove the memory card and see if t he video is stored in inte rnal memory.
The HP Photosma rt Software take s a long time be fore it is read y to transfer image s from my came ra. Having a large number of f iles stored on an optional memory card affects the amo unt of time it takes for the HP Photo smart Software to start transferring images.

A Managing batteries Your camera uses two AA batteries, either Alka line, Photo Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH).
