9 Getting Started 1 Getting St ar ted Congr atulations on y our pur chase o f the HP Photosmart M417/M517 digital camera , and w elcome to the wor ld of digital photograph y! This manual explains camera features y ou can use to ensure gre a t res u l ts w hi l e en jo yin g t he p h ot o gra p h ic ex pe ri en c e.

The camer a dock allo w s yo u to easily tr ansf er images to a compu ter , se nd images to a print er , vi e w images on a telev ision , and rechar ge batteri es in your camera .
11 Getting Started 2 . Install the Batter ie s 1. Open the Bat tery/M emory card door on the side of the camer a b y sliding the door to wa rd the bottom of the camera.

The lens e xtends and the P o wer ligh t to the left of the sw itch turns on solid gr een. The HP logo also display s on the Image Display as the camer a po wer s up .
13 Getting Started 5 . Set the R egion After c hoosing a language , y ou ar e prom pted to choo se the continent wher e you liv e . The Lan guag e and Region settings determine the defa ults for the date format and the f ormat of the vi deo signal for displa ying camer a images on a tele visi on (see TV Configuration on page 91 ).

Press the Timer/Burst button until Self- Timer or Self- Timer - 2 Shots appears in the Image Display. The i con for the self-timer setting w ill appear in the Live View screen .

This set ting produces ver y high qualit y images, w ith gr eater color accur acy , but uses the mos t memory .

51 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips Ada ptiv e L ighting This setting balances the r elationship betw een br ight and dark areas in a pictur e, pr eserving gentle contrasts but redu cing har sh contra sts. Dark ar eas in the pi ctur e are lightened , w hile brigh ter areas ar e left alone .

55 Taking Pictures and Recording Video Clips EV Compensation In difficult lighting conditions, you can use EV (Exposure Va l u e ) Compensation to override the automatic exposure setting that the camera makes.
