1 - 1 1 Getting Star ted Intr oduction The N86XX engine is designed f or inte gration into a wide r ange of OEM de vices. The engine’ s compact mechanica l design can drop into many e xisting applic.
1 - 2 OEM Engine Models There are three models of the OEM engin e, which ma y be used with the inter- f aces described in this manual. Refer to the char t below to determine the mod- els that can be used with your interf ace.
1 - 3 Connecting the Development Engine to the PC The development OEM engine can con nect to a PC for evaluation. Connecting with USB Note: If using the N86XXX-XXX-XX5 engi ne with USB Micro-B, do not supply power through the flex connector. Doing so may damage the host or engine.
1 - 4 2a. If using hi-speed USB, connect the USB interface cable to the side of the engine and to the USB port on the computer. Note: For additional USB programming an d technical information, refer to Honeywell’s “USB Application Note,” available at www.
1 - 5 Connecting with RS232 Serial P or t 1. If using an RS-232 connection, conn ect the serial interface cable to the interface board and to the matching port on the back of the com- puter. 2. Connect the power supply connector to the serial interface cable.
1 - 6 5. Verify the engine operation by scanning a bar code from the Sample Symbols in the back of this manual. The engine b eeps once when a bar code is successfully decoded. T o connect an engine to your host sy stem, ref er to the N86XX Integration Manual.
1 - 7 are no custom defaults, it will reset t he engine to the fact ory default settings. Any settings that have not been specifie d through the custom defaults will be defaulted to the factory default settings.

2 - 1 2 Pr ogramming the Interface Intr oduction This chapter describes how to program y our system f or the desired interf ace. Pr ogramming the Interface - Plug and Pla y Plug and Pla y bar codes provide instan t set up f or commonly used interf aces.
2 - 2 (www.honeywellaidc.com) . The driver will use the ne xt availab le COM Port number . Apple® Macintosh computers recognize the engine as a USB CDC class de vice and automatica lly uses a class driver . Note: No extra configuration (e .g., baud rate) is necessary.
2 - 3 Gilbar co ® T erminal Default Settings Scan the f ollowing Plug and Pla y co de to program the scanner f or a Gil- barco terminal. This bar code sets th e baud rate to 2400 bps and the data f or mat to 7 data bits, e ven parity , 2 stop bits.

2 - 11 Regular is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock k ey off. Caps Lock is used when you normally hav e the Caps Lock k ey on. Shift Lock is used when you normally hav e the Shift Lock k ey on (not common to U .S. ke yboards). A utomatic Caps Lock is used if y ou change the Caps Lock k ey on and off.
2 - 12 Emulate External K eyboar d should be scanned if you do not hav e an external ke yboard (IBM A T or equivalent). Note: After scanning the Emulate External Keyboard bar code, you must power cycle your computer. Ke yboard Con version Alphabetic ke yboard characters can be forc ed to be all upper case or all lo wer- case.
2 - 13 Def ault = Off. Ke yboard Modifier s This modifies special ke yboard feat ures, such as CTRL+ ASCII codes and T urbo Mode. Control + ASCII Mode On: The engine sends ke y combinations for ASCII con- trol characters f or values 00-1F . Wind ows is the pref erred mode.
2 - 14 T urbo Mode: The engine sends characters to a terminal faster . If the ter minal drops characters, do not use T urbo Mode. Def ault = Off Numeric Ke ypad Mode: Sends numeric characters as if entered from a numeric ke ypad.
2 - 15 RS232 Baud Rate Baud Rate sends the data fr om the engine to the termin al at the specified rate. The host terminal must be set for the same baud rate as the engine .
2 - 16 RS232 W or d Length: Data Bits, Stop Bits, and P arity Data Bits sets the word length at 7 or 8 bits of data per character . If an applica- tion requires only ASCII He x characters 0 through 7F decimal (te xt, digits, and punctuation), select 7 data bits.
2 - 17 RS232 Receiver Time-Out The unit sta ys aw ake to receiv e data until the RS232 Receiver Time-Out e xpires. A manual or serial trigge r resets the time-out. When an RS232 receiver is sleeping, a char acter ma y be sent to wak e up the receiver and reset the time-out.
2 - 18 RS232 Timeout When using Flow Control with Timeout, y ou must program the length of the dela y you w ant to wait f or CTS from the host. Set the length (in millisec- onds) f or a timeout by sca.
2 - 19 the engine waits for ACK/ NAK again. T ur n on the ACK/NAK protocol b y scanning the A CK/NAK On bar code below . T o tur n off the protocol, scan A CK/NAK Off .

3 - 1 3 Input/Output Settings P ower Up Beeper The engine can be programmed to beep when it’ s powered up . If you are using a cordless system, the base can also be programmed to beep when it is po w- ered up . Scan the Off bar code(s) if y ou don’t want a pow er up beep .
3 - 2 Tr i g g e r C l i c k T o hear an audible clic k e very time the trigger is pressed, scan the Tr i g g e r Click On bar code belo w . Scan the Tr i g g e r C l i c k O f f code if you don’t wish to hear the click. (This f eature has no effect on serial or aut omatic trigger ing.
3 - 3 Beeper V olume – Good Read The beeper volume codes modify the volume of the beep the engine emits on a good read. Def ault = High. Beeper Pitch – Good Read The beeper pitch codes modify the pitc h (frequency) of the beep the engine emits on a good read.
3 - 4 Beeper Pitch – Err or The beeper pitch codes modify the pitch (frequency) of the sound the engine emits when there is a bad read or error . Def ault = Razz. Beeper Duration – Good Read The beeper duration codes modify th e length of the beep the engine emits on a good read.
3 - 5 Number of Beeps – Good Read The number of beeps of a good read can be programmed from 1 - 9. The same number of beeps will be applied to the beeper a nd LED in response to a good read. F or e xample, if y o u pr ogram this option to ha v e five beeps , there will be five beeps and fiv e LED flashes in response to a good read.
3 - 6 Good Read Delay This sets the minimum amount of time bef ore the engine can read another bar code. Def ault = 0 ms (No Dela y). User -Specified Good Read Delay If you w ant to set your o wn leng.
3 - 7 slightly less range than Normal mode. Enhanced mode is best used when you require a very f ast scan speed and don’t require a long working range. Def ault = Manual T r igger-Nor mal. Serial T rigger Mode Y ou can activate the scanner either b y pres sing the trigger , or using a serial tr ig- ger command (see Trigger Commands on page 10-4).
3 - 8 Image Snap and Ship Image Snap and Ship tells the engine to take a pi cture (rather than read a bar code) when the trigger is pressed. Once the picture is snapped, it is shipped to the host system as a jpeg file by def aul t.
3 - 9 User -Specified Reread Dela y If you w ant to set y our own length f or th e reread delay , scan the bar code below , then set the dela y (from 0-30,000 millisec onds) by scanning digits from the inside back co ver , then scanning Save .
3 - 10 The def ault centering window is a 169x 128 pixe l area in the center of the engine’ s field of view . The f ollowing di ag ram illustrates the def ault top, bottom, left, and right pixel positions , measured from the top and the left side of the engine’ s field of view , which is 844 by 640 pix els.
3 - 11 Preferred Symbology The engine can be programmed to specif y one symbology as a higher priority ov er other symbologies in situations where both bar code symbologies appear on the same label, but the lo wer pr iority symbology cannot be disabled.
3 - 12 Low Priority Symbology T o specify the low priority symbology , scan the Low Priority Symbology bar code below . On the Symbology Chart on page A-1, find the symbology you want to set as lo w priority . Locate the Hex v alue f or that symbology and scan the 2 digit he x value from the Pr og ramming Char t (inside back co ver).
3 - 13 Output Sequence Overview Require Output Sequence When turned off, the bar code data wi ll be output to the host as the engine decodes it. When turned on, all output data must conform to an edited sequence or the engine will not transm it the output data to the host de vice.
3 - 14 5. End Output Sequence Editor Scan F F to enter an Output Sequence for an additional symbology, or Save to save your entries. Other Pr ogramming Selections • Discard This exits without saving any Output Sequence changes.
3 - 15 FF ter mination string for third code T o program the pre vious example using specific lengths , you w ould hav e to count any progr ammed prefix es, suffix es, or formatted characters as par t of the length.
3 - 16 Scan Discard P ar tial Sequence to discard par tial sequences when the output sequence operation is termin ated before completion. Scan T rans- mit P artial Sequence to transmit par tial sequences. (Any fields in the sequence where no data match occu rred will be skipped in the output.
3 - 17 f or each read. The engine attempts to find and decode new symbols as long as the trigger is pulled. When this programming selection is turned Off , the engine will only read the symbol closes t to the center of the image. Def ault = Off . No Read With No Read turned On , the engine notifies you if a code cannot be read.
3 - 18 Video Rever se Video Re verse is used to allo w the engine to read bar codes that are inv er ted. The Video Re verse Off bar code belo w is an example of this type of bar code . Scan Video Rever se Only to read only inv er ted bar codes. Scan Video Rever se and Standard Bar Codes to read both types of codes .
4 - 1 4 Data Editing Prefix/Suffix Overview When a bar code is scanned, additional in fo rm ation is sent to the host computer along with the bar code data. This gr oup of bar code data and additional, user-defined data is called a “message stri ng.
4 - 2 symbology to which you want to apply the prefix or suffix. For example, for Code 128, Code ID is “j” and Hex ID is “6A”. Step 3. Scan the 2 hex digits from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual or scan 9 , 9 for all symbologies.
4 - 3 Step 1. Scan the Clear One Prefix or Clear One Suffix symbol. Step 2. Determine the 2 digit Hex val ue from the Symbology Chart (included in the Symbology Chart, beginning on page A-1) for the symbology from which you want to clear the prefix or suffix.
4 - 4 Suffix Selections Function Code T ransmit When this selection is enabled and f unction codes are contained within the scanned data, the engine transmits the functi on code to the terminal. Char ts of these function codes are provided in Supported Interface Keys starting on page 8-2 .
4 - 5 Inter character Dela y An intercharacter dela y of up to 500 0 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) ma y be placed between the transmission of each char acter of scanned data.
4 - 6 Interfunction Dela y An interfunction dela y of up to 500 0 milliseconds (in 5ms increments) may be placed between the transmission of each segment of the message string.
5 - 1 5 Data Formatting Data Format Editor Intr oduction Y ou may use the Data F or mat Editor to change the engine’ s output. F or e xam- ple, y ou can use the Data F ormat Editor to inser t characters at cer tain points in bar code data as it is scanned.
5 - 2 you are programming. (See Primary/Alternate Data Formats on page 5-10 for further information.) Step 3. Terminal Type Refer to Terminal ID Table (page 5-4) and loca te the Terminal ID number for your PC. Scan three nu meric bar codes on the inside back cover to program the e ngine for your terminal ID (you must enter 3 digits).
5 - 3 Other Pr ogramming Selections Clear One Data Format This deletes one data format for one symbology. If you are clearing the primary format, scan 0 from the Programming Chart inside the back cover of this manual. If you are cl earing an alternate format, scan 1 , 2 , or 3 , depending on the format you are cl earing.
5 - 4 Discard to e xit without saving any data f or mat changes. T erminal ID T able Data Format Editor Commands Send Commands Send all character s F1 Include in the output message all of the characters from the input message, starting from current cursor position, followed by an insert character.
5 - 5 Send all character s up to a particular character F3 Include in the output message all characters from the input message, starting with the character at the current cursor posi tion and continuing to, but not including, the search char acter “ss,” followed by an insert character.
5 - 6 Move the cur sor to the beginning F7 Move the cursor to the first character in the input message. Syntax = F7. Move the cur sor to the end EA Move the cursor to the last ch aracter in the input message.
5 - 7 Searc h f orward f or a non-matching character E6 Search the input message forward fo r the first non-“xx” character from the current cursor positi on, leaving the cursor pointing to the non-“xx” character. Syntax = E6xx where xx stands for the search character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 8 Compare character s FE Compare the character in the current cursor position to the character “xx.” If characters are equal, move the cursor forward one position. Syntax = FExx where xx stands for the comparison character’s hex value for its ASCII code.
5 - 9 Data Formatter On, Not Required, Drop Prefix/Suffix Scanned data is modified according to y our data format. If a data format is found for a particular symbol, those prefixes and suffixes are not transmitted.
5 - 10 If you wish to hear the error tone when a non-matching bar code is f ound, scan the Data Format Non-Match Err or T one On bar code. Def ault = Data F ormat Non-Match Error T one On . Primary/Alternate Data Formats Y ou can sav e up to fo ur data formats, a nd s witch between these formats.
5 - 11 Fo r ex ample, y ou ma y hav e set your devi ce to the data f or mat you sa v ed as Data F ormat 3. Y ou can switch to Data F ormat 1 for a single trigger pull by scanning the Single Scan-Data Format 1 bar code below . The next bar code that is scanned uses Data F ormat 1, then reve r ts back to Data F ormat 3.

6 - 1 6 Symbologies This programming section contains the f ollowing menu selections. Ref er to Chapter 10 f or settings and def aults. • All Symbologies • Interleaved 2 of 5 • Aztec Code • Ko.
6 - 2 All Symbologies If you w ant to decode all the symbologi es allowab le for your engine , scan the All Symbologies On code. If on the other hand, y ou want to decode only a par ticular symbology , scan All Symbologies Off follo wed b y the On symbol f or that par ticular symbology .
6 - 3 Codabar <Default All Codabar Settings> Codabar On/Off Codabar Start / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadi ng and trailing ends of the bar code. Y ou may either transmit, or not transmit Star t/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit .
6 - 4 When Check Character is set to V alidate, but Don’t T ransmit , the unit will only read Codabar ba r codes printed with a check char acter , but will not transmit the chec k character with the scanned data. Codabar Concatenation Codabar suppor ts symbol concatenati on.
6 - 5 Codabar Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or addition al info r mation.
6 - 6 Code 39 < Default All Code 39 Settings > Code 39 On/Off Code 39 Star t / Stop Characters Star t/Stop characters identify the leadin g and trailing ends of the bar code . Y ou may either transmit, or not tr ansmit Star t/Stop characters. Def ault = Don’t T ransmit.
6 - 7 When Check Char acter is set to V alidate and T ransmit , the engine only reads Code 39 bar codes printed with a check character , and will transmit this character at the end of the scanned data. Def ault = No Check Char ac- ter . Code 39 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to chang e the message length.
6 - 8 which the bar codes are r ead, deleting the first space from each. The engine transmits the appended data when it reads a Code 39 bar code that star ts with a character other than a space. Def ault = Off . Code 32 Pharmaceutical (P ARAF) Code 32 Pharmaceutical is a form of the Code 39 symbology used by Ital- ian pharmacies.
6 - 9 Full ASCII If Full ASCII Code 39 dec oding is enabled, certai n character pairs within the bar code symbol will be inter preted as a single character . For e xample: $V will be decoded as the ASCII ch aracter SYN, and /C will be decoded as the ASCII character #.
6 - 10 and scan the value and the Sa ve bar code from the Programming Chart on the inside the back co v er of this ma nual. The data characters should then appear properly .
6 - 11 When Check Digit is set to V alidate and T ransmit , the engine only reads Interleaved 2 of 5 bar codes printed with a check digit, and will tr ansmit this digit at the end of the scanned data. 6 - 21 Code 128 Code P age Code pages define the mapping of character codes to characters . If the data received does not displa y with the proper characters, it ma y be because the bar code being scanned was created using a code page that is diff erent from the one the host progra m is e xpecting.
6 - 22 GS1-128 <Default All GS1-128 Settings> GS1-128 On/Off GS1-128 Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or additional inf ormation. Mini- mum and Maximum lengths = 1-80.
6 - 23 Te l e p e n <Default All Telepen Settings> T elepen On/Off T elepen Output Using AIM T elepen Output, the engine reads symbols with star t/stop pat- tern 1 and decodes them as standard full ASCII (star t/stop patter n 1).
6 - 24 T elepen Message Length Scan the bar codes below to change the message length. Ref er to Message Length Description (page 6-2) f or additional inf ormation.
6 - 25 UPC-A Number System The numeric system digit of a U .P .C . sy mbol is normally transmitted at the beginning of the scanned data, but the unit can be progr ammed so it will not transmit it. Def ault = On. UPC-A Addenda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned UPC-A data.
6 - 26 UPC-A Addenda Separator When this f eature is on, there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from the addenda. When tur ned off, there is no space . Def ault = On. UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code Use the f ollowing codes to enab le or disable UPC-A and EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code.
6 - 27 UPC-E0 <Default All UPC-E Settings> UPC-E0 On/Off Most U .P .C . bar codes lead with t he 0 number system. T o read these codes, use the UPC-E0 On selection. If y ou need to read codes that lead with the 1 number system, use UPC-E1 (page 6-30).
6 - 28 UPC-E0 Addenda Required When Required is scanned, the engine will only read UPC-E bar codes that hav e addenda. Def ault = Not Required. UPC-E0 Addenda Separator When this f eature is On , there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from th e addenda.
6 - 29 UPC-E0 Number System The numeric system digit of a U .P .C . sy mbol is normally transmitted at the beginning of the scanned data, but the unit can be progr ammed so it will not transmit it. T o prev ent transmission, scan Off . Def ault = On. UPC-E0 Addenda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned UPC-E data.
6 - 30 UPC-E1 Most U .P .C . bar codes lead with the 0 number system. F or these codes, use UPC-E0 (page 6-27). If you n eed to read codes that l ead with the 1 number system, use the UPC-E1 On selection.
6 - 31 EAN/JAN-13 Ad denda This selection adds 2 or 5 digits to the end of all scanned EAN/JAN-13 data. Def ault = Off f or both 2 Digit and 5 Digit Addenda. EAN/JAN-13 Ad denda Required When Required is scanned, the engine will only read EAN/JAN-13 bar codes that hav e addenda.
6 - 32 EAN/JA N-13 Addenda Separator When this f eature is On , there is a space between the data from the bar code and the data from th e addenda. When turned Off , there is no space. Def ault = On. Note: If you want to enable or disa ble EAN13 with Extended Coupon Code, refer to UPC-A/EAN-13 with Extended Coupon Code (page 6-26).
6 - 33 EAN/J AN-8 <Default All EAN/JAN-8 Settings> EAN/JAN-8 On/Off EAN/JAN-8 Chec k Digit This selection allows y ou to specif y whether the chec k digit should be transmitted at the end of the scanned data or not.
