6 2. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS - continued Use extreme c aution when reversing or pulling the lawn mower toward you. Stop the b lades if the lawn mower has to b e tilted for transporting, when crossing surface s other than grass and when transporting th e lawn mower to and from th e area to be m owed.

8 3. COMPONENT IDENTIFICATION - continues Record the frame and engine serial numbers and d ate of purchase in the spac e below. You will n eed these serial numb ers when ordering p arts and when making te chnical or warranty inq uiries.
9 4. CONTROLS DESCRIPTION OF CO NTROLS Fuel Valve The fuel valve opens and closes the fuel passage from th e fuel tank to the carburetor. The fuel valve m ust be ON to start and operat e the mower. Th e fuel valve should be kept O FF when the mower i s not in u se.
10 4. CONTROLS – continued Blade Control Lever This lever is conn ected to the Roto-Stop blade control system. Th e blades will not turn unless th e blade control b utton is pushe d in conjunction with the blade control leve r being p ushed forward.
11 4. CONTROLS - continued Drive Clutch Lever The drive c lutch lever engages (push forward) and d isengages (release) the transmission th at drives th e rear wheels.
12 4. CONTROLS - continued Cutting Height A djustment Lever All wheels of th e mower can be ad justed with one lever. The cutt ing height figures are approximate . The actual heigh t of cut grass will vary with lawn and soil conditions . Move the ad juster forward to lower an d back to raise the cutter housing.
13 4. CONTROLS - continued Shift Lever The shift lever selec ts and controls th e self-propelled drive spe ed. For mowing th ick grass or man oeuvring in small areas. For intermediate self-propelled mowing sp eed. For maximum self -propelled transport speed .
14 4. CONTROLS - continued Front Guard Use the front guard when liftin g the lawn mower, the front gu ard can also b e utilised to tie down lawnmowe r for transp ortation (See page 36 ). Do not step on the front guard. Replace th e front guard at an authorised Honda service dealer when ever it is deformed.
15 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS ARE YOU READY TO MOW? Be sure to wear p rotective clothing. Long pants an d eye protection can lower your risk of inju ry from th rown objects. Wear foot wear that p rotects your feet and won’t let you slip if you mow on slope s or uneve n ground .
16 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued CHECK YOUR MOWE R Blades Before each use, check the cutter blad es for damage or excessi ve wear. To avoid severe per sonal inju ry, disconne ct the spark pl ug cap to prevent accidental sta rting, and wea r heavy g loves to prot ect your han ds from the cutter blades.
17 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued 5. Inspect th e blades for wear and damage. 6. Check that the blade setting b olts and th e blade disc holder bolt are tigh t (see page 51 ). Never operate the m ower wi th a worn, d amaged, split or dented b lade.
18 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued NOTICE Blade wear is increas ed when the m ower is used on sand y soils. In spect the blades more often when the mower is used in these cond itions. A dull blad e can be sharp ened, but a blade that is worn out, bent, cracked or otherwise dam aged must b e replaced.
19 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued Engine Oil Level Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and the mower on a level surface. 1. Clean the area around th e oil filler cap. 2. Remove the oil fil ler cap, and wipe th e dipstick clean . 3.
20 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued Fuel Refuel in a well-ventil ated area before star ting the engine. If the engine has been runnin g, allow it to c ool. See page 50 for fuel recommendations. Petrol is highly flam mable and e xplosive. You can be burne d or seriou sly injured w hen hand ling fuel.
21 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued Air Cleaner Inspection Make sure th e air filters are c lean and in good condition. A d irty air filter will restrict air flow to t he c arburetor, redu cing engine performance. Refer to page 47 for air cleaner ser vice.
22 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued Installation 1. Raise the disch arge guard and hook the grass bag frame onto th e cutter housing as shown. 2. Release the d ischarge guard to secure the grass bag in p lace. Removal 1. Raise the disch arge guard, grasp the grass bag han dle and rem ove the grass bag.
23 5. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS - continued Cutting Height Check the cutter h ousing height settings. The lowest is ap proxim ately 16 mm and the h ighest setting is 7 6mm. To adjust cutting height, pull t he adjustmen t lever toward th e wheel, and m ove it into another n otch.
24 6. OPERATION MOWING PRECAUTI ONS Before operating the mower f or the first ti me, please review th e SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS beg inning on page 5 and SAFE MOWI NG PRACTI CES on page 31. Even if you h ave operated other mowers, tak e time to become familiar with how this mower works and practice in a safe area until you build up your skills.
25 6. OPERATION - continued 2. Move the th rottle lever to th e proper starting position COLD ENGINE: Move the th rottle lever to th e CHOKE p osition.
26 6. OPERATION - continued 3. Release the d rive clutc h lever. I f the drive clutc h lever is engaged , the mower will move forward when you operat e the starter. 4. Pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance, then pu ll briskly in the direction of the arrow as shown b elow.
27 6. OPERATION - continued OPERATING THE CO NTROLS FOR MOWING Throttle Lever For best cut quality, always m ow with the throttle lever in the HIGH p osition. When th e blades rotates at the p reset fast speed , it creates a strong fan action that lifts and cuts grass more efficien tly.
28 6. OPERATION - continued Drive Clutch Lever Push th e drive clutch lever forward and hold it again st the hand lebar to propel the mower forward . Release the d rive clutc h lever to stop the mower’s for ward movem ent. Always release the d rive clutch lever before starting the engin e.
29 6 . OPERATION - continued Shift Lever With the drive clutch released, move the shift lever to selec t 1 st (slow), 2 nd (medium) or 3 rd (fast). Do not use th e throttle lever to ad just your forward speed. Forward speed should be adjusted with th e shift lever, not the throttle lever.
30 6. OPERATION - continued STOPPING THE EN GINE 1. Release the d rive clutch lever and th e blade control lever. 2. Move the th rottle lever to th e STOP position.
31 6. OPERATION - continued SAFE MOWING PR ACTICES For your safety, keep all four wheels on th e ground and be c areful to avoid losing y our footing and your control of the m ower. Keep a firm grip on the handlebar and walk, never run with the mower.
32 6. OPERATION - continued Obstacles Use the side of the mower to cut close to large obstacles, such as fences or walls. Release the drive clutch lever to disengage the drive when mowing around trees and other obstacles. Push the mower around obstacles for better directional control.
33 6. OPERATION - continued MOWING TIPS Cutting Height Cutting Width For an even lawn finish, overlap each mowing swath by approxim ate 10cm. If the grass is very tall or thic k, use more overlap and a narrower mowing swath . Blade Speed The blades must spi n very fast to cut properly.
34 6. OPERATION - continued Blade Sharpnes s A sharp blade cuts cleanly. A dull blade tears the grass, leav ing shredded ends that turn brown. When your blades don’t cut cleanly anymor e, have t hem sharpened or replaced. Dry Grass If the ground is too dry, mowing will stir up a lot of d ust.
35 6. OPERATION - continued Mowing Patte rns Your Honda mower will work most efficiently if you use the following mo wing patterns as much as possible. Cutter housing, equipm ent design and the direction in which the blades rotate, cause these mowing patterns to give the best results.
36 7. TRANSPORTING/STORAGE BEFORE LOADING If the engine has been running, allow it to cool fo r at least 15 minutes before loading th e mower on to the transport vehicle. A hot en gine and exhaust system can burn you and can ignite some mat erials. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position.
37 7. TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - continued STORAGE PREPARA TION Proper storage p reparation is essential for keeping your lawn mower tr ouble- free and looking good.
38 7. TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - continued Fuel Petrol will oxidize and d eteriorate overtime when stored. O ld petrol will cause hard starting and it leaves gu m dep osits that clog the fuel system. If th e petrol in your mower d eteriorates d uring storage , you may need to h ave the carburetor and other fuel system comp onents serviced or replaced .
39 7. TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - continued Draining the F uel Tank and Carburetor 1. Empty th e fuel tank into an approved pet rol container. 2. Remove the carburetor drain b olt with a 10mm wren ch and drain the carburetor bowl fuel into an approved container.
40 7. TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - continued Handlebar Fol ding 1. Remove the grass b ag ( if installed). 2. Loosen or remove the two h andlebar lockin g knobs. 3. Pull the handlebar st ruts to release them from the locating grooves, then swing the handlebar forward with the drive clutch lever held by your hand.

TRANSPORTING/STORAGE - continued STORAGE PRECAUTI ONS If your mower will b e stored with petrol in th e fuel tank an d carburetor, it is important to re duce the hazard of pet rol vapour ignition. Selec t a well ventilated storage area away from any app liance th at operates with a flam e, such as a furnace or water heat er.
42 8. MAINTENANCE THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENAN CE Good maintenan ce is essen tial for safe, ec onomical and trouble-free operation. It will also h elp reduce air p ollution. To avoid the mowe r starting accident ally, pull off t he spark pl ug cap before carrying out main tenance wo rk.
43 8. MAINTENANCE - continued MAINTENANCE SAFE TY Some of the m ost important safety precau tions follow. However, we cann ot warn you of ever y conceivab le hazard that can arise in performing maintenan ce. Only you can decide whet her or not you should perform a give task.
44 8. MAINTENANCE - continued MAINTENANCE SCHE DULE 1) Service more frequently when used in dusty areas. 2) These item s should be serviced by your servicing deale r, unless you have the proper tools and are mec hanically p roficient. Refer to th e Honda workshop manu al for service procedures.
45 8. MAINTENANCE - continued ENGINE MAINTEN ANCE Engine Oil Change Drain the u sed oil while th e engin e is warm. Warm oil drains qu ickly and completely. 1. Turn the fuel valve to the O FF position to redu ce the possibility of fuel leakage (see page 9 ).
46 8. MAINTENANCE - continued 5. After changin g the engin e oil and before starting th e engin e, check th e oil le vel with th e mower on a level surface: a) Wipe the dipstick clean. b) Insert and remove the d ipstick without screwing it into th e filler neck.
47 8. MAINTENANCE - continued Air Cleaner Serv ice A dirty air clean er will restrict air flow to t he carbu retor, reduc ing engine performance. I f you operate the mower in very dusty areas, clean the air cleaner m ore often than specified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.
48 8. MAINTENANCE - continued Foam elemen t: Clean in warm soapy water, rinse and allow it to dry thoroughly. Or, clean in non-flammable solvent and allow it to dry. Dip the filter elem ent in clean engine oil, and then squ eeze out excess oil. 5. Wipe dirt from the inside of th e air clean er housing and cover, using a moist rag.
49 8. MAINTENANCE - continued 2. Use a spark p lug wrench to remove th e spark plug. 3. Inspect th e plug; replace it if the elec trode is worn, or if th e insu lator is cracked or chipped. 4. If you are going to reuse the spark plug, remove c arbon deposits with a stiff wire brush.
50 8. MAINTENANCE - continued Carburetor Modific ation of Altitude Oper ation At high altitu de, the standard air-fuel mixture will b e too rich. Performance will decrease and fuel consum ption will inc rease. A very rich mixture will al so foul the spark plug and cause hard starting.
51 8. MAINTENANCE - continued BLADE REMOV AL AND INSTALL ATION If you have removed the blad e assembly , always use a torque wrench to reinstall. We ar heavy gloves to protec t you r hands. To avoid weakening the blades or cau se imbalance or poor cutting, th e blades should be sharp ened by trained staff at an authorised Honda servi cing d ealer.

53 8. MAINTENANCE - continued Installation: 1. Clean dirt and grass from th e blades, blade disc and the inside on the cutter housing. 2. Install the blade, spring washers, blade washers and self-lock nuts to t he blade disc using the blade setting bolt as describe d below.
54 8. MAINTENANCE - continued 4. Install the blade/blade disc, washers and blade disc holder bolts. 5. Hold the b lade disc firmly an d install th e blade disc holder bolt s.
55 8. MAINTENANCE - continued Tighten th e blade disc h older with a torque wrench. Set a flat blade screwdriver at the engine’s bolt to preven t the blade disc from turning when tighte ning the blade disc hold er bolt, tighten the blade disc hold er bolt to the specified torque.
56 8. MAINTENANCE - continued GRASS BAG CLEANIN G AND REPLACEME N T Grass Bag Cleani ng Wash the bag with a garden h ose and allow it to dry c ompletely before use, a wet bag will clog quickly. Grass Bag Rep lacement Replace a worn or dam aged bag with a Honda genu ine bag or its equivalen t.
57 9. TROUBLESHOOTING ENGINE PROBLEM S Engine Will No t Start Possible Cause Correction 1. Check control positions. Fuel valve OFF. Turn fuel valve ON (pag e 24 ). Throttle lever in wrong position. Move throttle lever to CHOKE position, unless the engine is warm (page 25 ).
