CONTROLS & F EATURES 9 Fuel Valve The fuel valve opens and close s the fuel passage from the fuel tank to the carbu retor. Throttle Lever The throttle lev er controls engine speed and opens and closes the choke. CHOKE Closes the choke; use when start i ng a cold engine.
CONTROLS & FEATURES 10 Flywheel Brake Lever This lever is connected to the engine fl ywheel brake and t he ignition swi tch. The engine will not start unless th is lever is pushed for ward. Drive Clutch Lever The drive clutc h lever engages and disengages the transmiss ion speed selected by the shift l ever (page 11).
CONTROLS & F EATURES 11 Shift Lever The shif t lever selects a nd controls the mower’s drive s peed. 1 (slow) For mowing thick grass or maneuver ing in small areas. 2 (medium) For intermedi ate self-propelled mowi ng speed. 3 (fast) For maximum self-propelled transport speed.

BEFORE OPERATION 13 Check the General Condition of the Lawn M ower: • Look around and underneath the lawn mower for signs of oil or gasoline le aks. • Look for signs of damage. • Check each contr ol for proper oper ation. • Check the blades for wear.
BEFORE OPERATION 14 GET THE MOWER READY Handlebar Height Adjustment 1. Adjust handlebar height for a comfortable oper ating position. 2. Loosen the handlebar locking knobs.
BEFORE OPERATION 15 Grass Bag A lawn mower works li ke a vacuum cleaner; i t blows air through the bag, which traps t he grass cli ppings. Always emp ty the grass bag before it becomes f i lled to the l imit of its capacity. Bagging performance wil l diminish after the bag becomes about 90% fill ed.
BEFORE OPERATION 16 Cutting Height Bagging/Side-Dischar ge: Move all four adjust ment levers to the same position. Mulching: Move the fro nt adjustment levers one position h igher than the rear levers. To adjust cutting height , pull each adjustment l ever toward the wheel, and move it into anothe r notch.
17 OPERATION MOWING PRECAUTIONS Before operati ng t he mower for the fir st time, please revi ew IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION (page 4) and the previous chapter, BEFORE OPERATION (pag e 12). Even if you have operated other mowers, take t ime to become familiar wit h how this mower works and practice in a safe area unt il you build up your ski lls.
OPERATION 18 3. Press the fl ywheel brake l ever against the handlebar and hold them toget her firmly. Pul l the starter gr ip lightly until you feel resi stance, then pull briskl y.
OPERATION 19 OPERATING THE CONTROLS FOR MOWING Throttle Lever For best cut qu ality, always mow with the t hrottle lever in the FAST positi on. W hen the blade s rotate at the preset fast speed, it creates a strong fan action that lift s and cuts grass more effi ciently.
OPERATION 20 Drive Clutch Lever Push the drive clu tch lever forward and hold i t against the handleba r to propel the mower forward. Release the drive clut c h lever to stop the mower’s f orward movement. Always release t he drive clutch leve r befo re sta rting t he engine.
OPERATION 21 STO PPING THE ENG INE 1. Move the throt tle lever to SLOW. 2. Release the drive clut ch lever and fly wheel brake lever. 3. When the mower is not in use, turn the fuel valve to the OFF positi on.
OPERATION 22 SAFE MOWING PRACTICES For your safety , keep all four wheels on the ground, an d be careful to avoid losi ng your footing and your control of the mower. Keep a firm grip on the hand lebar, and walk, never run, with t he mower. Be very careful when mowing uneven or rough grou nd.
OPERATION 23 Obstacles Use the side of the mower to cut close to large obst acles, such as fences or walls. Release the drive clut c h lever to disengag e the drive when mowing around trees and other obstacles. Push the mower ar ound obstacles for better di rectional control.
OPERATION 24 MOWING TIPS When to Mow Most grasses should be mowed when they have grown 1/2 to 1 inch above their recommended height. More frequent mowing i s required for mulc hing than for bagging. For best results, yo u may need to mow the lawn twice a week during the growing se ason.
OPERATION 25 Blade Speed The blade must spin very fast t o cut properly. Al ways use the FAST thrott l e setting, and kee p the engine running at maximum rpm. If engine speed drops, it could mean the engine is being overloaded by the blade tryi ng to cut too much grass.
OPERATION 26 Mowing Patterns Your Honda mower will work most effici ently if you use the followi ng mowing patterns as much as possi ble. Mower deck and equipment design, and the dir ection in which the blade rotates, ca use these mowing patt erns to give t he best res ults.

SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 30 BLADES Inspection 1. Move th e fuel valve t o the OFF positi on (see page 9) and disconnect t he spark plug cap from the spark plu g (see page 36). 2. Tilt t he mower to t he right, so th e carbureto r side is up. This will help to prevent fue l leakage and hard start ing.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 31 Blade Removal and Install ation If you remove the bl ades for sharpening or rep lacement, you will need a torque wrenc h for install ation.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 32 Blade Inst allation 1. Clean dir t and grass from around the blade mounti ng area. 2. Install the blade s using the two blade bolts and special washers as shown. Be sure to insta ll the special wash ers with the concave sid e toward t he blades and the co nvex side toward t he bolts.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 33 ENGINE MAINTENANCE Engine Oil Change Drain t he used oil while t he engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely . 1. Turn the fue l valve O FF (see page 9). This will r educe t he possibil ity of fuel leakage. 2.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 34 Engine Oil Level Check 1. Unscrew and remove the fill er cap/dipst ick and wipe it clean. 2. Insert and remove the di pstick without screwing it into the filler neck . Check th e oil level shown on the dipstick. 3. If the oi l level is low, add oil to reach the upper limit mar k on the dips t ick.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 35 Air Cleaner Service A dirt y air filt er will restrict ai r flow to the carburetor , reducing engine performance. I f you operate the mower in very dusty ar eas, c lean the air filter more often than spec ified in the MA INTENANCE SCHEDULE (page 29).
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 36 Spark Plug Service NOTICE Incorrec t spark plugs can cause engine damage. For good performance, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. 1. Disconn ect the spark plug cap and remove any dirt from around the spark plug area.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 37 4. Measure the spark plug ele ctrode gap with a suitable gauge. The gap should be 0.028 ~ 0.031 in (0 .7 ~ 0.8 mm). Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefu lly bending the side electrode. 5. Install the spark pl ug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross- thr eadi ng.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 38 FUEL Fuel Information This engine is certi fied to operate on unleaded gasol ine with a pump octane rati ng of 86 or higher. Unleaded gasol ine produces fewer engine and spark plug depos its and extends exhaust system lif e.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 39 Refueling Fuel tank capacity: 0.29 US gal (1.1 lite r) Use unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher . Refuel in a well-ventil ated area before starting the engine. If the engi ne has been running, allow i t to cool.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 40 CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMEN TS Flywheel Brak e Cable Adjustment 1. Measure fr ee play at the top of the flywheel br ake lever. Free pla y should be 3/1 6 ~ 3/8 in (5 ~ 10 mm). If adjustment is necessary : 2. Loosen the lock nuts with a 10 mm wrench, and move the adjuster up or down as required.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 41 Drive Clutch Ca ble Adjustment 1. Measure fr ee play at the top of the lever, as shown. Free pla y should be 1/1 6 ~ 3/16 in (1 ~ 5 mm). If adjustment is necess ary: 2. Loosen the lock nuts with a 10 mm wrench, and move the adjuster up or down as required.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 42 Shift Cable Adjustment Shift cable ad j ustment i s necessary i f the shift lev er does not operate smoothly, does not shift prop erly into a gear, or does not align with the numbers beside the le ver.
SERVICING Y OUR LAWN MOWER 43 Throttle Cabl e Inspection Throttl e cable adjustment i s necessary if the thrott le lever does not operate the choke pro perly. You can inspect choke opera t ion by observing t he movement of the choke arm, which is locat ed on top of the carburetor.
SERVICI NG YOUR LAWN MOWER 44 GRASS BAG CLEANING AND RE PLACEM ENT Grass Bag Cleaning Wash the bag wit h a garden hose, and allow it to dry completely befor e use; a wet bag will clog quickly . Grass Bag Replacement Replace a worn or damaged bag with a Honda replacemen t bag or its equivalent ( page 63).
45 STORAGE STORAGE PREPARATION Proper storag e preparation is essenti al for keeping your lawn mower trouble free and looking good. The following steps will hel p to keep rust and corrosion f rom impairing your lawn mower’ s function and appearance, and wil l make the engine easier to start when you use the lawn mower again.
STORAGE 46 3. With the mower in an upri ght position, start t he engine out doors, and let it run until it r eaches normal operating temperature to evaporate any water r emaining on the engine.
STORAGE 47 Fuel Gasoline wi ll oxidize an d deteriorate in stora ge. Old gasoline will c ause hard start i ng, and it leaves gum deposits that cl og the fuel syst em. If the gasolin e in your mower deteri orates during storage, you m ay need to have the car buretor and other fuel system comp onents, serviced or replaced.
STORAGE 48 Draining the Carbur etor and Fuel Tank 1. Make sure the fuel val v e is OFF (see page 9). Remove the carbureto r drain bolt with a 10 mm wrench, and drain the fuel from the carburet or bowl into an approved cont ainer. If you only wish to drain t he carburet or, skip to step 3.
STORAGE 49 Engine Cylinder Remove the spark pl ug (see page 36). Pour a tablespoon (5 ~ 10 cc) of cle an engine oil i nto the cylinder . Pull the sta rter rope several times t o distri bute the oil in the cyli nder. Reinstall the spark pl ug. Pull the starter rope slowly until resist ance is felt then retur n the starter gr ip gently.
STORAGE 50 PLACING IN S TORAGE If your mower will be stored with gasoli ne in the fuel tank and carbureto r, it is important to reduce the ha zard of gasoline vapor ignition. Sel ect a well-ventilated stor age area away from any appliance that operat es with a flame, such as a fur nace, water heater, or clothes dryer.
51 TRANSPO RTING BEFORE LOADING If the engine has been running, allow it to cool fo r at least 15 minut es before loading the mower on the transpor t vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust system can burn you and can ig nite some materials. 1. Turn t he fuel valve to the OFF p osition.
52 TAKING CARE OF U NEXPEC TED PROBLEMS ENGI NE PROB LEMS Engine Will Not Start Possible Cause Correction 1. Check control positions. Fuel valve OFF. Turn fuel valve O N (page 9). Throttle lever in w rong position. Move throttle lever to CH OKE position, unless the engine is warm (page 17).
TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS 53 VIBRATION PROBLEMS MOWING AND BAGGING PROBLEMS Excessive Vibrat ion Possible Cause Correction 1. Check mower deck and blades. Grass and debris lodged under mower d eck. Clear out mower deck (page 25). Blades loose, bent, damaged, or unbalanced by improper sharpening.

TECHNICAL & CONSUMER INFORMATION 55 Spark Arrester Service (optional equipment) Your lawn mower engi ne is not factory- equipped with a spark arrester . In some areas, it is illegal t o operate an engine without a spark arrester . Check local laws and regulat ions.
TECHNICAL & CON SUMER INFORMATION 56 Oxygenated Fuels Some conventional gasoli nes are being blended with alcoh ol or an ether compound. These gasoli nes are collectively referred to as oxygenated fuel s. To meet clean air standards, some areas of the United States and Canada use oxyg enated fuels to help re duce emissions.

Contr ol of hydrocarbons and ox ides of nitrogen i s very import ant because, under certain condit ions, they react t o form phot ochemical smog when subjected to sunlight.
