8 H4D C omputer system requirements Digital les naturally end up on a computer for proces sing. Image -storage and correc tion requires a certain minimum standard re garding computer cap abilities. Large images will require a high-p erfor manc e computer with plenty of mem ory , advanced graphics cap abilit ies and a recent operating system.

The button immediately above each command eect s the change . So in this case, for example, you would press the F LA SH button to ‘ e xit ’ from the screen.

18 H4D When shooting, the sen sor unit can displa y the information mo st of ten requir ed for a quick settings check. The unit's buttons are used t o naviga te the mai n menu and change settings.

24 H4D 4 Carr ying strap 1 , 2 The carr ying strap is at tached by rstly withdrawing the safet y collar . The ho ok is then freed and att ached to the strap lug ( g. 1 ). Slide back the safet y collar ( g. 2) to ensure t he hook remains in the locked position bet ween the small protruding lug s.

35 H4D Manual focus There is both a Manual focus mode set ting and a Manual Overri de capabilit y . Manual focus is a specic set ting that you actively make , whereas Manual Overr ide is always available as a t emporar y override of an autofocus setting.
36 H4D Note though that in th is mode the lens will focus at a distance and will remain focused at that distance whi le pressure remains on the sh ut ter release button.
37 H4D Tr u e F o c u s can be used with long er lenses, smaller apertures etc but the fur ther you come from situations sim ilar to the 'ideal' as described above, t he less the eec t will be until it has no visible eec t at al l.
38 H4D T rue F ocus and Absolut e Position L ock The obvious situation that would most benet from using Tr u e F o c u s would be a fashion shoot with a fairly wide angle l ens at a large aper ture setting and where the central area of the image is c lothing while retaining focus on the model's face.

41 H4D Light met ering and exposure control T wo primar y factors have to be c onsidered when mak ing exposure cont rol choice, namely , meteri ng method and expos ure method: Metering method determines in which manner the ligh t measurement is made and how much of the image is tak en into acc ount ( Centre W e igh ted, CentreS pot and Spot).
42 H4D Metering met hod There are three meterin g modes available. All thre e are reec tive meth ods ( measuring the light reected o various se lected par ts of the subjec t ac cording to method) and are through the lens (T TL).

T o set t he Manua l mode, p roceed a s follows w ith the ca mera in active mode: 1 ) Press the EXP button on the viewnder . 2 ) T urn the front con trol wheel in either dir ection until you r each M (Manual ) .

51 H4D Introduction The captured image is temporarily stored internally on a CF card or ex ternal ly , via a Fire Wire connection onto a computer hard disk. When tethered to a computer you can control the camera using P hocus (see the separate Phocus manual for further det ail s) .
52 H4D P ar ts, components & control panel buttons The but tons are used for browsi ng images and navigating the menu system to mak e set tings. T wo of the but tons, located at the bot tom-right and -lef t of the screen, are given an on-scree n label that ch anges according t o the current cont ex t.

54 H4D The menu is struc tured in a manner similar t o mobile/c ell phones and similar small electronic devices. V arious branches within the tree system are accessed by pressi ng the navigation button until you reach the point where a choic e has to be made.

60 H4D 1 2 1 2 Using compact ash memor y cards When using a compact-ash card, the H4D is c ompletely self- contained. No additional wires or connectors ne ed to be attache d. The H4D is shipped with a 4 GB ( o r larger ) compact-ash card, which is capable of holding approximately 50 − 1 00 c aptures ( accordi ng to model).
61 H4D For matting The camera is only abl e to r ead and write to storage media that hav e bee n formatted. New cards or disk s sometimes hav e no for - matting, or you might want to c onvert media that are currently using a format that the camera cannot read.
62 H4D T ethered t o a computer When tethered to a computer , you can control man y camera func tions using P hocus sof tware. All captures are sav ed as 3F les ( as opposed to 3FR les from a CF card) and can be immediately exp orted to other formats if desired.

64 H4D 1 1 2 3 1 2 Set tings c heck ISO, White Balance and Browse set ti ngs should be check ed before each session. They are therefore placed at the top lev el of the menu for quick and easy acces s. They are also shown on-s creen in most preview modes, so you can easily keep an eye on them as your w ork.

68 H4D Bas ic image browsing The large, full- color displa y enables you to inspect your shots while you are still on- location. It oers full -screen previews, high- magnication zoom, t wo lev els of thumbnails and an alysis tools including a full histogram and camera set tings.

72 H4D Histogram Mode 1 , 2, 3 Using th e histogram The histogram provides a graph that indicates t he total number of pixels at each brigh t - ness level, with brightnes ses going from b lack on t he lef t to white on the right. It is a valuable tool for evaluating captures.
73 H4D F ull Details Mode 4 In full- details mode, you can read a complete list of camera set ting s, plus see the histogram and, in the backgr ound, a darkened preview of the image.

75 H4D Using Instant Appro val Archit ecture The Instant Approval Archit ec ture system helps you to evalua te your images as quick ly as you take them. It works by supplying immediate audio feedback , which tells y ou instantly whether each new capture is exp osed correctly or likely to be rated as ov er- or underexp osed.

78 H4D Brow sing b y approv al sta tus Y ou can set the came ra to bro wse by approval status, which means, for example, that you will see only green-s tatus images a s you browse a bat ch ( or both green and yellow , or only red, etc.). The current lter setting is indicated on- screen, as illu strated.

82 H4D Organizing work withb at ches Collections of captures are stored in named and dated folders called batches. They help you to organize your sho ts as you work and function exac tly a s folders on a computer .

10 2 H4D There are a number of more advanced features that while not necessarily used every day still rema in immediately acces sible through the menu system. T hey pro vide the integral nesses that make the H4D a pow er ful and sophisticated tool to satisf y a variet y of professional demands.

10 4 H4D 2 Br ack eting The bracketing facility provides an automatic series of captures; one at the standard e xposure setting (Manual or Aut o ) and the others with pre -de termined deviations i n E V from the standard ex posure . This is par ticularly useful for images containi ng a ver y wide tonal range, for e xample.

10 6 H4D 2 3 In te rva l By using the interval set ting, you can allow t he camera to take a series of captures automatically o ver a set perio d. This is often re quired for time and motio n studies, se curity sur veillance, nature study , etc.
