4 INTRODUC TION Thank you for choosing H arman Kardon ! With the pur chase of a Harman Kardon A VR 260 you are about to begin many years of list ening enjoyment . Designed to provide all the e xcitemen t and detail of movie soundtracks and every nuance of musical selections, the A VR 260 is truly a multichannel receiver for the new millennium.
5 ENGLISH In tandem with EzSet/EQ , the AVR includes a full set of manual configur ation settings for those who wish to custom-trim their system ev en fur ther . A Quadruple Crossov er bass management system makes it possible t o enter different cr ossover settings for each speaker group .

7 ENGLISH F RO NT -P A NE L C ONTR OLS D Speaker/Channel Input I ndicators : These indicators are multipurpose, indicating either the speak er t ype selected for each channel or the incoming data-signal configura tion.
8 RE AR -P ANE L C ONNE C TIONS 0 AM Antenna: Connect the AM loop antenna supplied with the receiv er to these terminals.
9 ENGLISH RE AR -P ANE L C O NNEC TIONS C RS-232 Reset: This switch is only used during a software upgrade. A standard pr ocessor reset is performed by pressing and holding the fr ont- panel OK Button while the rec eiver is in Standby .
10 RE AR -P ANE L C O NNEC TIONS P Video 1 Video Outputs: Connect these jacks to the REC ORD/INPUT composite or S-V ideo jack on a VCR. Q Video 1 Video Inputs: Connect these jacks to the PLA Y/OUT composite or S-V ideo jacks on a TV or other video source .

12 RE MO TE C ONTROL F UNCTIONS The remot e is capable of operating the A VR 260 and most Harman Kardon CD changers or players, CD Rec orders and Blu-ray players , using the control codes that are part of the remote .
13 ENGLISH INST A LLA TION AND C ONNE C TIONS After unpacking the unit , and placing it on a solid sur face capable of supporting its weight, you will need t o make the connections to y our audio and video equipment. A U DIO EQU IPME NT CONNEC TIONS There ar e two formats for audio connections: digital and analog.
14 INST A LLA TION AND C ONNE C TIONS HDMI Outp ut Conn ec tio ns Connect the HDMI Output X to an HDMI input on your video displa y. Thanks to the A VR 260’ s video processing syst em, all video input signals are conv erted to an HDMI output, so only one connection is required between the A VR and your display .
15 ENGLISH INST A LLA TION AND C ONNE C TIONS When connecting wires to the speak ers, be cer tain to observe proper polarity . Note that the positiv e (+) terminal of each speaker connection now carries a specific color code as noted on page 8. Ho wever , most speakers will still use a red terminal for the postiv e (+) connec tion.

17 ENGLISH INST A LLA TION AND C ONNE C TIONS When the A VR is used in 5.1-channel operation, the preferred loca tion for surround speak ers is on the side walls of the room, a t or slightly behind the listening position.
18 SY S TEM C ONF IgU RA TION FIRST TURN O N Plug the Po wer Cable 1. I into an un switched A C outlet. Press the Main P ower Switch on the r ear panel so that is in the ON 2. position. Note that the P ower Indicator 2 will turn amber , indicating that the unit is in Standby mode .

20 SY S TEM C ONF IgU RA TION NOTE : When the display has a DVI input which is connected to the A VR using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter , if the display is not HDCP-compliant, the picture will be distorted. In that case, a differ ent video connection must be used (component , composite or S-video).

The flexibility arises from the A VR 260’ s capability to be configured to match the char ac teristics of your particular speakers, and to compensa te for the acoustic characteristics of your r oom.
23 ENGLISH SY S TEM C ONF IgU RA TION If you previously sa ved EzSet/EQ results in this setup position and you wish to reconfigur e the speakers from scrat ch, select the Reset option.
24 SY S TEM C ONF IgU RA TION Sub Mod e Move the cursor to the Sub Mode line to pr ogram bass management for the subwoofer . T he subwoofer’ s setting depends upon how you pr ogrammed the front left and right speak ers.
25 ENGLISH SY S TEM C ONF IgU RA TION Step Four – Set ting Chan nel Ou tp ut Levels Manually For a con ventional 2-channel receiver , the balance control enables the user to control the st ereo imaging by adjusting the relativ e loudness of the lef t and right channels, as hear d at the listening position.

29 ENGLISH OP ERA TION HDM I - equipp ed mul tic hanne l disc pl ay er : Connect the player’ s HDMI output to one of the A VR’ s HDMI Inputs. No • other connections are necessary . Assign the HDMI Input to both the Audio and Video Input Fr om Source • settings in the Source Info menu.
30 OP ERA TION Surround Mo de Sele ct ion One of the most impor tant features of the A VR 260 is its abilit y to repr oduce a full multichannel surround sound field fr om digital sources , analog matrix surround encoded progr ams and standard ster eo or even mono programs.
31 ENGLISH OP ERA TION The first number indicat es the number of front channels in the signal: “1” represents a monophonic r ecording , usually an older program that has been digitally remaster ed or , more rarely , a modern program for which the director has chosen a special effect.
32 OP ERA TION When one of the Dolby Pro L ogic II Music modes is selec ted, acc ess to the Edit submenu becomes a vailable. This submenu may be used t o adjust special settings available only in Music mode: C enter Width, Dimension and Panor ama.
33 ENGLISH MUL TIRO OM OP ERA TION T ape Re cording In normal operation, the audio or video sour ce selected for listening through the A VR is sent to the recor d outputs.
34 MUL TIRO OM OP ERA TION When the Zone 2 menu appears , the blue cursor bar will be at the Status: Off line. Since this line is used to turn the syst em on and off, do not make an adjustment here unless y ou wish to turn the system on at this time. T o turn the system on, press the OK Butt on V once, to turn it off again, pr ess once more .
35 ENGLISH VIDE O AD jU STM ENTS VIDEO ADJUST M E NTS The A VR 260 includes sophisticated DCDi by F aroudja video processing that delivers enhanc ed video quality , even for older analog video source components, as w ell as upgraded on-screen displays.
36 A UDI O EF F E C TS / AD V ANC ED F EA TURES Cross Color Suppr essor : T urn this setting on to remove cr oss color artifac ts, which can occur when high-frequency luminance (brightness) signals are misint erpreted as chr oma (color) signals, which can cause unwant ed flickering, flashing colors or rainbo w patterns.
37 ENGLISH A DV A NC ED F EA TURES Ge neral A VR Set ting s V olume Units : Select whether volume is displayed in the con ventional decibel scale or on a numeric scale from 0 to 100. When the decibel scale is used, 0dB is the maximum volume , with lower volumes measured as nega tive values.
38 TUNER OP ERA T ION TO SELECT THE BU IL T I N TUN ER Press the Sourc e List Button on the front panel and use the 1. KL Buttons to scroll thr ough the source list. The last-used band (AM or F M) will be active. Press the Radio Source Selector on the remot e.
39 ENGLISH TUNER OP ERA T ION Program Search (P TY ) An important feature of RDS is its capability of encoding broadcasts with Program Type ( PTY ) codes that indicat e the t ype of material being broadcast .

41 ENGLISH P ROgRAMM INg ThE RE MO TE Code Readout When the code has been enter ed using the Auto Search method, it is alwa ys a good idea to find out the exact code so that it may be easily r eentered if necessary.
