15 ENGLISH C ONNEC TIONS There ar e different types of audio and video connections used to connect the receiv er , the speakers, the video displa y , and the source devices . T he Consumer Electronics Associa tion has established the CEA® color-coding standard.
16 C ONNEC TIONS Digi tal Audio The A VR 160 is equipped with thr ee HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) inputs, and one output. HDMI t echnology enables digital audio and video information to be carried using a single cable, deliv ering the highest quality picture and sound.
17 ENGLISH C ONNEC TIONS Video Connec t ions Many sourc es output both audio and video signals (e.g., Blu-r ay Disc or DVD player , cable television box, HD TV tuner , satellite bo x, V CR, DVR). In addition to the audio connection, make one type of video connection for each of these sources ( only one at a time for any source).
18 SPEAK ER PL AC EM EN T Optimally , the speakers should be placed in a cir cle with the listening position at its cent er . The speakers should be angled so that they dir ectly face the listening position.
19 ENGLISH GET TIN G ST ARTE D Installing the A VR 160 and connecting it to the other system components can be complex. T o simplify installation, it is suggested that you design y our system before y ou begin connecting wires and cables.
20 GET TIN G ST ARTE D NOTES : For multichannel disc pla yers, if both the device and the TV use HDMI • connections for video, then check the o wner’ s manual for the device to determine whether it transmits multichannel audio via its HDMI output.
21 ENGLISH INS T ALL A T IO N Y ou are now ready to begin installing the A VR. Before beginning to connect the various components t o the receiver , turn off all devices, including the A VR 160, and unplug their power cor ds. Don ’t plug in any of the power cords until you have finished making all of your connections .

23 ENGLISH IN I T IAL SE TU P In this section, you will configure the A VR 160 to match your actual system. A video display must be connected to one of the video monitor outputs on the receiv er .
24 IN I T IAL SE TU P Figure 21 – EzSet/EQ in Pr ogress As the EzSet/EQ system tests each speaker , its position will appear on screen. If the test sweep is hear d from a different speak er than the one indicated on screen, turn off the A VR and check the speaker-wire connections, then begin again.

26 OP ERA TION Now that y ou have installed your c omponents and completed a basic configuration, y ou are ready to begin enjo ying your home theater system. TURN IN G ON THE A VR 1 6 0 Flip the rear-panel Main P ower S witch to the “On” position.
27 ENGLISH OP ERA TION HEADPHONES Plug the 1/4" (6,3 mm) plug on a pair of headphones into the jack behind the front-panel door for priv ate listening . T he default Headphone bypass mode delivers a con ventional 2-channel signal to the headphones.
28 OP ERA TION RDS Disp lay Op tion s The RDS system is capable of transmitting a wide variety of information in addition to the initial station call sign that appears when a station is first tuned. In normal RDS opera tion the display will indicate the station name, broadcast network or call lett ers.
29 ENGLISH OP ERA TION SE LECTING A SUR ROUN D MOD E Surround mode selection can be as simple or sophisticated as your individual system and tastes . Feel free to e xperiment, and you ma y find a few favorites for certain sources or program types. Mor e detailed information on surround modes may be found in the Adv anced Functions Sec tion.
30 AD V ANC ED F UNC TION S Much of the A VR 160’ s per formance is handled automatically , with little intervention requir ed on your part. The A VR 160 is capable of being customized to suit y our system and your tastes . In this section, some of the more advanc ed adjustments available are described .
31 ENGLISH AD V ANC ED F UNC TION S The second number indica tes whether any surround channels ar e present: “ 0 ” indicates tha t no surround information is presen t. “ 1 ” indicates tha t a matrixed surround signal is pr esent. “ 2 ” indicates discr ete left and right surround channels .
32 AD V ANC ED F UNC TION S Night Mode : Night mode is available with some Dolby Digital pr ograms, if it has been encoded in the material . It compresses the peak sound levels , maintaining the intelligibility of the dialogue and quieter passages , while reducing the loudness of special effects and louder passages, to a void disturbing others.

34 AD V ANC ED F UNC TION S A/V SYNC DELA Y : This line allows you t o compensate for a “lip sync” problem, in which a sour ce device or the video display introduc es a significant amount of video processing tha t causes the audio and video par ts of the signal to lose synchroniza tion.

46 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE PROCESSOR RESET If the unit behaves err atically after a power sur ge, first turn off the Main Po wer Switch and unplug the A C power cor d for at least 3 minutes. Plug the cord back in and turn the r eceiver on. If this doesn ’t help , reset the A VR.
