4 STEP 3: USING YOUR TRANSFER SWITCH: NEVER run portable generators indoors or in garages, basements, or sheds. Portable generators should alw ays be used at least 5 feet a way from windows, doors, vents, or any other opening. Carbon Monoxide (C O) from a generator is deadly an d can kill you in minutes.
