1 1 Preparing to Install Y our Drive This guide provides the information you need to install a new or replac ement: ■ CD or DVD driv e ■ Diskette drive ■ Flas h memory dri ve ■ Ta p e d r i v e ■ Zip d rive Only the tape and Zip drives require uninstalling and installing sof tware as part of the installation process.

Before opening the com puter case, follow these guidelines: ■ T urn off your comput er .

6 Chapter 2: Removing a n Existing Drive www .gatew a y .com Remo ving drive software If you are installi ng a diskette, CD, or DVD drive, you do not need to remove any software.
7 Removing drive softwa r e www .gatew a y .com 4 Click Add/Remove or Remo ve and follow the on-screen instructions. If you are asked to remov e any shared f iles, click No . (These files may be needed by other program s.) 5 When the removal is co mplete, shut down W indows and turn off y our computer .

See the documentation that came with your computer for instructions on removing your computer case c over .
9 Removing the drive www .gatew a y .com 4 Disconnect the fro nt panel USB round da ta cable from the bac k of the flash memory drive. Make sure that you pull the connector , not th e cable. Note the orientation of th e connector . Y ou will attach the data cable to your new drive using the same orientation.

The jumper block is used to configure your IDE drive as a master , slave, or cable select drive, or to configure your SCSI drive’ s ID and termination. A label on the drive s hows which jumper/pin position corresponds to which setting.

Y ou can use bootable drives to start up ( boot ) your computer wit h special bootable media, s uch as a system diskette (a diskette that contains operati ng system files).

18 Chapte r 3: Installi ng a New Dr ive www .gatew a y .com Setting the IDE jumpers IDE drives contain a jumper bloc k . A jumper block is a set of pins located on the drive. The jumper b lock is typically located on t he rear of the drive, although it ma y be located on the top or th e bottom of the drive.
19 Configur ing the new I DE drive www .gatew a y .com T o set the jumpers for an IDE drive: 1 Look at the jumper label to find the jumpers for setting a master , a slave, or a cable select drive. The label is either a sticker on the drive, or it is printed direct ly on the drive.

21 Configu ring the new SC SI drive www .gatew a y .com SCSI IDs In addition to recogni zing the ends of the SCS I chain, your computer needs to designate the orde r of the links. For this reason , each device on the S CSI chain re quires a uni que de vice ID.

If your drive will be the last device on the SCSI cable or the only device on the cable, as shown in Example A, make sure that a jumper is installed on the SCSI terminati on jumper pins or that a termina tor plug is inst alled.
23 Inst alling a dri ve www .gatew a y .com Installing a drive This section tells you ho w to install the drive and how to attac h the cables. T o install a drive: 1 Slide the drive into the bay and secure the drive in the drive bay by following the inst ructions in your computer user’ s guide.

Be careful not to for ce the cable connector or bend a ny of the pins. Follow the data cable from the connection on the dri ve to the other end of the cab le.

Y our computer does not recognize the diskette driv e. ■ If the diskette drive is identified incorrectly in the BIOS, you may not be able to start from or forma t a diskette.

Because no locking clips hold th e diskette drive cable in place, the cable may n eed to be reseated.

Each time you remove an item, try to start your computer using a system diskette or try to fo rmat a diskette.

43 Zip drive www .gatew a y .com Cannot copy songs fr om a Secure Digital memory car d to m y computer . Secure Digital memory cards have copy protection algorithms that prevent you from copying copyrighted material from the card to an other device.

Follow “Prev enting static electricity di scharge” on page 3 when working inside your computer . After a period of succes sful operation, the tape drive appears to f ail during a bac kup or restore.

Y ou can clean the drive using one of two method s: ■ Use a T rav an cleanin g cartridge ■ Clean t he drive head m anually T o clean the drive head manually: 1 Moisten a cl ean, fo am-tip sw ab in isopropyl alcohol.
