iRMC S2/S3 11 1 Preface Modern ser ver systems are becoming increasingly comple x. The requirements with respect to the management of such systems are g rowing accordingly .
12 iRMC S2/S3 Purpose and target groups of t he manual As an autonomous system on the system board of a modern PRIMERGY server , the iRMC S2/S3 has its own operating system, i ts own web server , separate user management and independent alert management.
iRMC S2/S3 13 Functions o f the iRMC S2/S3 1.2 Functions of the iRMC S2/S3 (o ve rview) The iRMC S2/S3 supports a wide range of functions that are pro vided by def ault. With Adv anced Video Redirection (A VR) and Remote Storage, the iRMC S2/S3 also provi des two additional adv anced f eatures f or the remote management of PRIMERGY servers.
14 iRMC S2/S3 Functions of t he iRMC S2/S3 ● P o wer consumption control The iRMC S2/S3 allo ws comprehensive po wer consumption control on the managed server . In add ition, you can specify the mode (minimum pow er consumption or maximum perf ormance) that the iRMC S2/S3 uses to control power c onsumption on the managed server .
iRMC S2/S3 15 Functions o f the iRMC S2/S3 ● LAN On some systems, the LA N interface of the fitted s ystem NIC (Network Interfac e Card) on the ser ver is reserved f or the management LAN.
16 iRMC S2/S3 Functions of t he iRMC S2/S3 ● Global user management using a directory ser vice The global user IDs f or the iRMC S2/S3 are stored centr ally in the directory serv ice's directory . This makes it possib le to manage the user identifications on a central server .
iRMC S2/S3 17 Functions o f the iRMC S2/S3 – A modem can be connected to the ser ial interf ace. This can then be used to send alerts (e.g. to a mobile phone v ia SMS). In addition, the iRMC S2/S3 pro vides the Ser verVi ew agents with all the rele vant i nformation.
18 iRMC S2/S3 Functions of t he iRMC S2/S3 – Local monitor-off suppor t: It is possib le to pow er down the local screen of the managed PRIMERGY server during an A VR session in order to prev ent unauthor ized persons from observing user input and actions carried out on the local ser ver screen during the A VR session.
iRMC S2/S3 19 Communication interfaces of the iRMC S2/S3 1.3 Communic ation interfaces of the iRMC S2/S3 The iRMC S2/S3 pro vides the f ollo wing communication in terf aces: ● iRMC S2/S3 web interface (web interface) The connection to the iRMC S2/S3 web s er ver is estab lished o ver a standard web browser (e .
20 iRMC S2/S3 Communication protocols used by the iRMC S2/S3 1.4 Communication protocols used by the iRM C S2/S 3 The communication protocols and por ts used b y the iRMC S2/S3 are shown in table 1 . I As of iRMC S2/S3 firmware v ersion 5.00, the Remote Storage port is used only f or the Remote Storage server and client-internal communications .
iRMC S2/S3 21 IPMI - technical background 1.5 IPM I - technical b ac kground The iRMC S2/S3 mak es the BMC functions a vailab le o ver the IPMI interf ace. Intelligent Platform Management The “Intelligent Platf orm Management” initiative is a response to the increas ing comple xity of mode r n server systems .
22 iRMC S2/S3 IPMI - technical backgr ound Adv antage The IPMI specifications ensure the independence of functions f or inv entory , logging, reco very and monitoring of a system by the system processor , BIOS or operating sys tem. This means that a sy stem can still be in v olv ed in platf orm management when it is shut down and turned off .
iRMC S2/S3 23 IPMI - technical background IPMI, IPMB and ICMB The IPMI initiativ e resulted in three central standards : – IPMI. Intelligent Platform Management Interface Specif ication describes the higher-lev el architecture, the c urrent commands, e vent formats, data pac k ets and proper ties that are used in IPMI-based systems.
24 iRMC S2/S3 IPMI - technical backgr ound In addition, IPM I provides ‘lo w le v el’ I 2 C commands , which can be acc essed via a management controller connected to the IPMB on 'unintelli gent' I 2 C modules that cannot process IPMI commands .
iRMC S2/S3 25 IPMI - technical background Figure 3: IPMI block diagram (source: IPMI spec ification, see section "Ref erences" on page 29 ).
26 iRMC S2/S3 IPMI - technical backgr ound IPMI and “in band ” and “o ut of band” m anagem ent In the field of system management, a dis tinction is made between “in-band” and “out-of-band” management: – The term “in-band” management is used when the operating system is running on the managed ser v er .
iRMC S2/S3 27 IPMI - technical background Of the two ports that RCMP uses under UDP , the BMC commun icates with the LAN controller via port 623 ( primar y RMCP P or t). Figure 4: BMC and LAN controller Serial Over LAN interface (SOL) “Serial Ov er LAN” is an interf ace compliant with the IPMI V2.
28 iRMC S2/S3 IPMI - technical backgr ound Figure 5: BMC and SOL The SOL character data is then ex changed between the BMC of the managed system and the remote workstation as SOL messages.
iRMC S2/S3 29 Data Center Management Interface (DCMI) User identifications F or ‘session based’ channels (see the section "Channel concept under IPMI" on page 28 ), a user login is necessary . By contrast, the ‘sessi onless’ channels hav e no user authentic ation.
