3 Key Guide Key Guide Searches for a translation, performs a calculation, selects an item, plays/stops an MP3 file, or confirms a deletion. Direction Keys Moves in the indicated direction. In a list, press up ( ) or down ( ) to highlight the previous or next item.
4 Press the control wheel up to increase the volume in the mp3 player or change to the previous home city in the clock. Press the wheel down to decrease the volume in the mp3 player or change to the next home city in the clock.
5 Calculator Keys Adds Subtracts Multiplies Divides Q–P T ypes numbers. G(+/-) Changes the number on the screen to a negative or positive number . H( √ x) Calculates a square root. J(x 2 ) Squares a number . K(1/x) Calculates a reciprocal. L(%) Calculates a percentage.
6 Understanding Y our Device Screen in lid : The screen of your device is contained in the lid. T o expose the keyboard, the lid must be moved up. Apply light pressure with your thumbs to the bottom of the device until you hear the lid move past the catch.
7 Speaker : The speaker is located in the upper right corner on the back of your device. For best results, do not cover the speaker . Headphone Jack : The headphone jack is located on the bottom right side of your device, when looking at the back. The headphone jack is designed for 2.
8 If the keyboard fails to respond, or if the screen performs erratically , perform a system reset by following the steps below . 1. Use a paper clip to gently press the reset button on your unit. The reset button is recessed in a pin-sized hole on the back of the unit, below the speaker .
9 Y our TGA-490 uses a rechargeable battery of capacity 530 mAH. Battery power lasts for about 1 week of normal translator use or 6 hours of continuous MP3 music play . When you see the low battery warning, please recharge your battery . The first time you use your device, it requires approximately 3 hours of charging before use.
10 Y our device is designed to be light, compact and durable. However , it is an electronic device and must be treated carefully . Putting unnecessary pressure on it or striking the device against other objects can cause damage. In order to avoid damage to your device, please: • Do not drop, crush, bend, or apply excessive force to the device.
11 Before you can use your device, the battery must be charged for approximately 3 hours. Y ou can do this by connecting your device to your PC using the provided USB cable or by connecting your device to a power source using the provided AC adapter .
12 Changing the Settings Changing the Settings Y our TGA-490 allows you to adjust the volume, adjust the shutoff time, set the clock, turn a key tone on or off, change the device language, adjust the contrast, check your battery life, and view how much memory is available.
13 Setting the Clock Setting the Clock 1. Press . 2. Use to highlight Clock Setup and then press . The Clock Setup menu is displayed with Home City highlighted. 3. Press or to highlight Home City , Time , Date , Home City DST , Time Format , Date Format , World City , World City DST , or Time Zone .
14 5. Press or to highlight your choice and then press to select it. Note : For the Time and Date settings, press to move to the next field. Press only when all the fields are set. For Time Zone , press or to move to the previous or next time zone. Press to view the cities saved in this device that fall within that time zone.
15 Clock Mode displays the clock. MP3 opens the MP3 player . Setup opens the Settings menu. Calculator displays the calculator . V oice Memo opens the list of voice memos. Alarm opens the alarm set up screen. Contact List displays the contact list. Game displays the list of games.
16 3. Press to see your options. 4. Press or to highlight your choice and then press to select it. Note : When Time Setup is highlighted, press to see your options. Press or to change the hour and then press to move to the next field. Press or to change the minutes.

Note : If you change the target language while a word is typed at the translation entry screen, the translation is automatically displayed in the new target language.
18 Press to delete letters or press to clear the input box. Y ou can type accent marks, diacritical marks and capital letters, but they are not needed to find matches. T o type accents, first type the letter and then press repeatedly , until you see the accent you want.
19 Press to hear the source word or phrase pronounced. Press to hear the target word or phrase pronounced. Note : For Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian a spelling of the word using Roman letters is also included. ✓ Viewing Alternate Forms If you enter a correct word that is not in the word list, it might be an alternate form of a word.
20 Understanding Input Methods Understanding Input Methods When entering a word in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Russian source language, there are a few differences from the languages with Roman-based alphabets. • For Chinese , type Roman letters to search for words.
21 T ranslating Phrases • For Russian , type letters according to your device’s keyboard. Note : Russian letters are indicated at the lower right of the keys. Because the Cyrillic alphabet contains more letters than a Roman alphabet, the rest of the letters are located on the math operator keys.
22 4. Press to see the translation. If there is more than one screen of data, use to read. Press to hear the source word or phrase pronounced. Press to hear the target word or phrase pronounced. 5. Press or to go to the previous or next phrase. 6. Press to return to the list.
23 Each name can contain up to 30 characters, including spaces. T o delete a character , press . Note : In the Name, E-mail, and Company fields, you can enter letters, numbers, and symbols. T ype a letter and then press to add an accent to the letter you just typed.
24 Viewing or Editing Entries 1. Press . Y our list of entries is displayed in alphabetical order . 2. Press or to scroll down or up through the list one line at a time or press or to page down or up through the list. 3. Press to view the highlighted entry .

27 Making Currency Conversions 1. Press until you see the converter . 2. Press to highlight Currency and then press . Note : The first time you use the currency converter , you must set the exchange rate. 3. T ype an exchange rate in the “Rate” field.
28 There are five fun games for you to choose from: Hangman , Quiz , Magic Lottery , Memory , and Keyboard Wiz . Selecting a Game 1. Press . 2. Use or to highlight the game you want.

A word or phrase appears on the screen. T o change the source language, press , press or to highlight the source language you want, and then press .
30 Playing the Games Playing the Games set to max . That is, there are at least as many possibilities as the amount of numbers you want picked. The default is 49. 3. Press or to select how many numbers you want in your set and then press . 4. Press or to set your range of numbers.

32 Using V oice Memos Using V oice Memos Y our TGA-490 contains a voice memo feature where you can record reminders or ideas and play them back later . Recording a V oice Memo 1. Press . The voice memo start screen is displayed. 2. Press to begin recording.
33 Playing the Games Using the MP3 Player ✓ Deleting a V oice Memo While viewing the list of saved voice memos, you can delete a memo to clear memory for new voice memos. Use or to highlight the memo you want to delete and then press . Press to delete the voice memo or to cancel the deletion.
34 Using the MP3 Player Using the MP3 Player 3. Click My Computer on your PC. Y ou see a new “Removable Disk” drive connected to your computer . 4. Double-click Removable Disk . 5. Double-click the MP3 folder . 6. Find on your computer the MP3 songs you want to copy to your device and copy them to the MP3 folder .
35 Using the MP3 Player Using the MP3 Player ✓ Viewing L yrics A song’s lyrics will display automatically while listening to a song when no key has been pressed for a few seconds. Note : Lyrics must be saved as part of the MP3 track in order to be displayed.

37 Using the MP3 Player Specifications Deleting a Song In addition to deleting a song using your computer (see “Saving Songs”), you can delete them using your device. 1. Press . Y ou see the list of songs. 2. Press or to highlight the song you want to delete.
