INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing the F ocus Enhancements FireStore DR-D V5000 DTE D V Video Disk Recorder for JVC full-size D V camcorders. DR-D V5000 adds a digital disk recorder/pla yer for a po werful acquisition combination. The pur pose of this User Guide is to e xplain the features and operation of the FireStore DR-D V5000.

FireStore DR-D V5000 to any D V video device such as a mix er, camcorder or deck. Use FireStore ’ s random access capabilities to na vigate quickly from clip to clip without ha ving to spool forw ard and backward through tape.
If you are using a digital battery system that passes battery life status to the camcorder, and are using a camcorder that is compatible with these systems, connect the follo wing cables betw een DR-D.

USING EXTERNAL FIREWIRE DISK DRIVES In addition to using FireStore FSHDD-1 FireW ire HDDs in the inter nal slot on DR- D V5000, it is also possible to connect an y FireW ire disk driv e to the HDD I/O por t on DR-D V5000.
P AGE 1 When used with a JVC GY -D V5000 series camcorder , DR-D V5000 communicates with the camcorder f irst before po w er up or shutdo wn. In cases where the camera po wer is switched to of f when DR-D V5000 is connected and ON, the camcorder will w ait until DR-D V5000 is po w ered do wn f irst before po w ering both do wn.
Insert a FireStore FSHDD-1 FireW ire HDD to the internal drive slot or connect a F ireWire disk driv e to the HDD I/O port. If a FSHDD-1 FireW ire HDD comes from the factor y , it should be conf igured and ready to use. If the message “ No Disk Detected ” appears, ensure you ha ve a FSHDD-1 FireW ire HDD inserted properly .
P AGE 1 • SMPTE NTSC (or P AL) - Displays the external timecode value being generated b y a camcorder or other device during a record session. Timecode mode has to be set to EXT TC for this function to operate (see page 28 of this User Guide). In pla yback mode, this displa ys the embedded SMPTE timecode value in a particular track.

P AGE 1 Pla y Ke y Starts playback of the selected clip. By pressing and holding the SHIFT key plus the pla y button, DR-D V5000 will immediately go into rev erse pla y mode. Backwar d Index K ey Returns to the beginning of the cur rent clip if in pla yback mode.
DR-DV5000 MENUS AND FUNCTIONS FireStore DR-D V5000 features a comprehensiv e menu system which allo ws a number of features to be initiated and setup. T o enter the DR-D V5000 MAIN MENU , press SOFT KEY 1 while in ST OP mode.
P AGE 1 Normal Record Standard and default record mode. When REC is triggered , DR-D V5000 begins standard recording. A single press of a STOP trigger will put DR-D V5000 into REC P A USE mode.
Once RETR O DISK time is set, the user can exit the Menus and return to the Main Screen. An “ L ” will now appear ne xt to the record symbol on DR-D V5000 ’ s displa y . Pressing the REC trigger once will put DR-D V5000 immediately into RETR O DISK RECORD .
Snap When SN AP is selected and REC is triggered , a single frame is grabbed. SNAP can be used with LOCAL, and SPLIT SLA VE RECORD control modes. If SN AP is the RECORD MODE when po wer is cut to the unit or it is turned off, on re-boot, DR-D V5000 will be in NORMAL REC mode.
PLA Y MODE MENU The DR-D V5000 PLA Y MODE MENU allo ws different pla yback functions to be enabled. User simpl y selects the mode. Pressing EXIT will exit back to the menu screen. Once a particular mode is selected in the Pla y Mode menu, the unit will remain in that mode until a different mode is selected.
A V/C A V/C is utilized in PLA YBA CK and other situations where DR-D V5000 is controlled by an e xternal FireW ire device (such as a D V NLE system), connected to the “ D V I/O port on DR-D V5000. NO TE: A V/C is NOT for use in DR-D V5000 RECORD MODES.
In SERIES RECORD mode, user simply selects the particular length tape they are using in the camcorder b y pressing the do wn button. OFF disables the feature.
Once in HDD Bypass mode, the follo wing LCD displa y will appear: T o Exit this mode, simply press the EXIT ke y . Be sure to properly dismount the F ireWire driv e from the computer system f irst before exiting HDD Bypass mode on DR-D V5000.
HDD P or t The HDD P ort setting allows the user to assign a function to the DR-D V5000 “ HDD I/O ” port. BYP ASS mode is for making the internal disk drive a vailab le to an external device (such as a computer). HDD Mode is used when the “ HDD I/O ” port is used for connecting external FireW ire disk drives.
The Date and time form the basis of the DR- D V5000 f ile naming str ucture for use of clips on a computer . On DR-D V5000, f iles are identif ied by TRA CK and V OLUME (disk driv e) number on the LCD . F or instance, a f ile on the DR- D V5000 LCD identif ied as 1-043 is clip number 43 on V olume (disk) 1.
will displa y “ OS UPGRADE ERR OR ” . It is necessary to restar t y our system once an OS upgrade is complete. Cam T ype User simply selects the camcorder the y will be using with DR-D V5000. This will load a preference for that particular model. The highlighted item is the current camcorder after exit.
FREE R UN Mode - When the user enables FREE R UN mode, DR-D V5000 begins counting from the v alue stored. If the user uses the TC PRESET function, when the number is entered and the TC PRESET menu is exited , DR-D V5000 begins counting.
This menu allo ws the user to EN ABLE or DISABLE the IR sensor on DR-D V5000. User simply selects the Menu Item. Highlighted mode is cur rent mode after exit. Pressing EXIT will e xit back to the menu screen. GPI Settings This menu allo ws the user to change the setting of the GPI port.

Organize OMF When f iles are recorded in the A VID OMF f ile format, this command automatically takes all the OMF and AIF audio f iles at the end of a recording session and places them into a folder on the disk driv e named “ OMFI MediaFiles ” .
T o exit from the warning screen, press either NO or EXIT . T o begin the format, press the YES key . FireStore DR-D V5000 utilizes a F A T32 format type. If you are using a non-F A T32 formatted driv e, see the section on Partitioning a volume. Once complete, the disk dri ve is ready for use with DR-D V5000.
If an er ror is found , the user will be prompted to repair the f ile. File repair onl y takes a fe w moments to complete in most cases. CURRENT CLIP does a similar function, but on the selected clip only . If an error is found , DR-D V5000 will prompt the user to repair the problem.

Mounting Fir eWir e Disk Driv es to Windo ws XP , 2000, 98SE and ME Computer Systems On a W indo ws based computer system, simply double click the My Computer icon on the top left hand corner of the desktop. Y ou will see the follo wing windo w: Locate your F ireW ire disk driv e.
f iles simultaneously; an OMF video file and tw o separate AIF audio f iles. On the computer ’ s desktop, the f iles will look like this... On the FireStore DR-D V5000, the video f ile (OMF) and the audio f iles (AIF) appear as one track. If you delete an A vid D V OMF f ile, FireStore will delete the audio and video portions at the same time.
FireStore DR-DV5000 User Guide Dismounting Fir eWir e Disk Driv es fr om Windo ws XP , 2000, 98SE and ME Computer Systems Once you ha ve completed w orking with your disk driv e on a W indo ws XP , W indows 2000, W indo ws 98SE or Windo ws ME computer system, you must f irst dismount the dri ve before unplugging it.
