Carefully place probes on a heat/cold resistant surface or rack until they reach room temperature. • The A C adapter can present safety concerns if misused or damaged. T o av oid the risk of electric shock or fire, do not use the AC adapter outdoors or in a dusty , dirty , or wet environment.
• Probes are fragile devices which can be damaged by mechanical shock, ov erheating, and absorption of moisture or fluids in the wires or hub . Damage may not be visibly apparent but nevertheless can cause drift, in - stability , and loss of accuracy .

smaller type to the right of the measurement. The possibl e units are de grees Celsius (C), resistance in oh ms ( Ω ), degrees F ahrenheit (F), K elvin (K), and degrees R ankine (R). The unit s can be easily changed by placing the di splay in the units setting mode using th e MODE button (see Section 7.
T emperature is generally sensed at the tip of the probe. T o get an accurate tem - perature measurement the probe sheath should be well immersed, with ade - quate depth and fit, into the mediu m to be measured.

7 Displa y Functions The 1521 operates in an y of se ve ral modes which determine what information is visible in the l ower al phanumeric portion of the display . The MODE button changes the mode. This b utton can be pressed repeatedly unt il a desired mode is set.
Each of these operating mod es is described in the sections that follow . 7.1 Blank Mode This mode is identified by “Blank” that temporarily app ears on the display .
In this mode nothing appears on the alphanumeric porti on of the display . Use this mode if you are only interested in the latest measurements and want to sim - plify the appearance of the display . The message “Prb cal expired”, “M tr cal e xpired”, “Recharge Needed”, or “Probe is locked” may be displayed.
7.5 Units This mode is identified by “Un its: C/ Ω /F/K/R” that a ppears on the display . This mode allo ws you to select the unit of measurement: C for degrees Celsius, Ω for resistance in ohms, F for de grees F ahrenheit, K for K elvin, and R for Rankine.
7.8 CAL MODE The calibration menu contains fu nctions for setting pro be and instrument cali - bration parameters. If a probe parameter is changed, the probe parameter is up - loaded into the INF O-CON prob e connector wh en the CAL MODE is exited or after scrolling through the entire menu.

Note : Probe parameters are uploaded to the INFO-CON connector at thi s point. 7.8.17 Filter The digital filter helps to smooth variations in the measurements and improve resolution. A negati ve ef fect of filtering is that it tends to slo w the response to changes in temperature.
8 Comm unications Interface Remote communications allows an e x ternal de vice, such as a computer , to com - municate with the 1521 to obtain measurement data and cont rol its operati on. Communication is accomplished with v arious commands issued to the 1521 through the RS-232 serial port .
ON (all carriage returns are followed b y a linefeed (ASCII decimal 10)), and the duple x to HALF disabli ng echo. The serial port can be used to transmit measurements to a computer or printer . It can also be used to change set tings of the 1521 from a comput er or interface with software.

9 Calibration The 1521 should be calibrated a t re gular interv als to ensure that it conti nues to measure with proper accuracy . Calibration should only be done by qualified, authorized personnel.
4. V erify the accuracy at 0 Ω , 4k Ω ,1 0k Ω ,4 0k Ω , 100 k Ω , and 500 k Ω . 5. Set the meter calibration date to the present date (see Section 7.
10 Maintenance • This instrument has been designed with the utmost care. Ease of operation and simplicity of maintenance have been a central theme in the product dev elopment. Therefore, with proper care the instrument should require very little maintenance.
11 T r oubleshooting In case you run into dif ficulty while operat ing the 1521, this sect ion provides some suggestions that may help you solve the probl em. Belo w are sev eral situa - tions that may arise follo wed by possible causes of the problem and suggested actions you might take .
Problem Solution While attempti ng to measure re - sistance the display shows an i n - correct value. Poor or incorrect connecti on of the probe. A common mista ke is to connect the wires of t he probe to the wrong t erminals. Check the wi r - ing carefully ( see Figure 6).
The instrument was designed specif ically as a test and measuring device. Com - pliance to the EMC di recti ve i s through IEC 61326-1 Electrical equipment for measur ement, contr ol and labor atory use – EMC r equire ments (1998). As noted in the IEC 61326-1, the instrument can ha ve varyi ng configurat ions.
