1 Welcome! Your EPSON Stylus ® COLOR 980 printer is the ide al output device for text, business graphics, digital photo graphs, and more. You can print anything from reports and re sumes to photos and g reeting cards with amazing results . EPSON ® offers a variety of net working and IEEE 1394 (FireWire ® ) options for your printer.

3 Viewing Yo ur Electronic Printer Man ual Your printer software CD-ROM includes an electronic Reference Guide for your printer. The manual is in HTML format, so you need a browser—such as Microsoft ® Internet Explorer 3.0 or later o r Netscape Navigator ® 3.
4 4. Click View Referen ce Guide . The main screen for yo ur printer Reference Guide appears: 5. You can eith er view the manual from the CD-ROM ( View Reference Guide ) or copy the manual to your hard drive ( Install Reference Guid e ) and view it from there.
5 Click a to pic on the left to ex pand the table of con tents. After expandin g the table of content s , you can cl ick on the topic you want to view. If there’s a right arrow , click it to view subtopics, t hen click on a topic to go to it. Click the d own arrow to close a s ubtopic list.
6 The Main Me nu appears: 3. Click View EPSON Documentation . You s ee this screen: 4. Click Watch Prin ter Movies . The main s creen for the pr inter movies appears: 5. Click the poster for the mo vie you want to see. If necessary, select an op tion on the next s creen.
7 Printing from Start to Finish Here’s what to do to print a basic document —su ch as a memo, newsletter, or photo—fro m loading the pa per to selecting p rint setting s to controlli ng the print job.
8 Keep the following in mi nd when loading paper: ■ Load the printabl e side face up. It’s usually whiter or brighter than the o ther side. ■ Load lett erhead or prepri nted paper into t h e print er top edge first. ■ Don’t load pap e r above the arrow on t h e left edg e guide.
9 Selecting Printer Software Settings Once you click Propert ies , you see your printer software Prop erties dialog box: Make the fo llowing settings: ■ Choose the Media Type for yo ur paper (click the arro w to display the Media Type li s t).
10 Selecting Windows Default Settings The print er settings you ma ke apply only t o the applicatio n you’re currently usin g. If you usuall y print one typ e of document in different applic ations—for examp le, black ink on le gal size paper—you can ch ange the default p rinter settings for a ll your programs.
11 Controlling Printin g At the Print dialog box, click OK (or Print , depending on yo ur application) t o start prin tin g. After a m oment, the Pro gress Meter appear s and shows t he progress of yo ur print job. You can use the buttons to cancel, pause, or restart printing.
12 Printing on a Macintosh This section describes the basic steps for printing on a Macintosh. (To print with Windows, see page 7.) Loading Pap er Make sure yo ur printer and computer are turned on. Place your pa per against the ri ght edge gu ide and slide th e left edge guide a gainst the pape r.
13 Opening the Printer Software After you op en your application pro gram and create your do cument, you’re ready to select your pa ge setup and other printe r software sett ings.
14 Selecting Printer Software Settings Now op en the File menu and click Pr int . You see the main printer set tings dialog box for your appli ca tion (your dialog b ox may look slightly different): M.
15 Controlling Printin g Once you’ve clicked Print , yo u r document begins printing. If you turned on background printing i n the Chooser, you can select EPSON Monitor3 from the A pplication menu at th e right side of th e menu bar to check the progre ss of your print job.
16 Printing on Envelopes You can load up to 10 envelopes at a tim e, flap edge first and pri ntable side up. Place them again s t the r ight edge guid e and slide the l eft edge g uide a gain st th em. (You’ll g e t bett er results if you press each envelope flat be fore loading it, or load one envelope a t a time.
17 Printing on Both Sides of the Paper You can prin t on bot h side s of the p age wi th you r prin ter’s Double-Sided Print ing option . This section includes i nstructions for standard do uble-sided printing . You can also vi ew a short explanat ion of double-sided printi ng in the printe r movies on your CD-ROM.
18 2. Windows: Sele ct File > P rint . Then choose Double-Sided Printi ng on the EPSON Stylus COLOR Prope rties Layout tab. Macintosh: Select File > Page Setup . Then choose Double-Sided Printing in the Page Setup dialo g box. 3. Click OK to sav e your se ttings.
19 Selecting the Co rrect Media Type Your printer a utomatically ad justs itself for the t ype of paper you select in your printer software. That’s why the Me dia Type setting is so import ant. It tells your printe r what kind of pape r you’re using an d adjusts th e ink coverage accordingly.

21 Maintaining Your Printer This sect ion describes main tenance procedure s to keep your p rinter working at its best and prepar ation steps for mo ving your printer.
22 Follow th ese steps to run the Head Cle aning utility: 1. Make sure th e printer is turned on but not printing, an d both the B black and A color ink out lights are off.
23 7. If the no zzle check pattern has n o gaps in its lin es, click Finish . If the patt ern has any gaps, click Clean to clean the prin t head again. If you don’t see an y improvement afte r cleaning three or four time s, check the so lutions in “Problems Getting Go od Print Quality” on page 39.
24 Replacing an Ink Cartridge When th e B bla ck or A color i nk out light flash es, the indicated ca rtridge is low on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge. When the light stays on, the c artridge is empt y and you need t o replace it.
25 Removing and Installin g Ink Cartridges This section describes how to replace an ink cartridge when the B black or A color ink out light i s either flashi ng or on. If both lights are off and you want to re place an outdated ink cartridge, fol low the procedure on page 27.
26 6. Lift the cartridge out of the printer and dispose of i t carefully. 7. Unwrap the new ink cartridge. Then remove the yellow tape seal o n top. 8. Lower the new ink cartridge i nto its holder with the label facing up and toward the back of the prin ter.
27 Replacing an Outdated In k Cartridge If an ink cartridge is more t h an six months ol d, you may need to replace it. How can you tell? You may notice that yo u r printouts don’t look a s good as they used to. If print quality doesn’t improve after cl eaning and al igning the print head, you can replace one or bot h cartridges.
28 5. Pull up the ink cartridge clamp. The cartridge rises up from its holder. 6. Lift th e cartridge out of the printer and disp ose of it carefully. If ink gets on your hands , wash t hem thor oughly with so ap an d water. If ink gets into you r eyes, flush t hem immediate ly with water .
29 Aligning the Print Head If your printo uts contain mi saligned vertical li nes, you may need t o align t he print head. Your prin ter must be connected to a local port, no t on a network, to use the Print Hea d Alignment util ity. Follow the s e st eps: 1.
30 Cleaning the Printer To keep your printe r working at its best, you should clean it s everal times a year. Follow th ese steps: 1. Turn off the printer an d wait for the P power l ight to go out. 2. Unplug the powe r cord and disconnect the printer cable.
31 Transportin g the Printer If you move your p r inter some distance , you need to prepare it for transportation i n its or iginal box or on e of a similar size. Follow the s e st eps: To avoid damag e , always leave the ink ca rtridges installed whe n transp o rting the printer.

34 Follow th e guidelines belo w when you check the contro l panel lights: P is on The P pow er light is on when the printer is ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a print job, c harging ink, or cleaning the print head. S flashes When the S paper out light flashes, you have a pa per jam.
35 Running a Prin ter Check You can run a pri nter check to dete rmine whether a probl em comes from the printe r itself o r some other s ource. Follow th ese steps: 1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. 2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.

37 Problems and Solutions Here are s ome troubleshoot ing tips if yo u have any p r oble ms setting up your pri nter, installing software, or p rinting. Problems Settin g Up the Printer or In stalling Software The printer star ted making noise after ink cartridge installation.
38 Your printer icon doesn’t appear in the Chooser (Maci nt osh). ■ Your Macin tosh ha s extens ion conflicts. Disable Qui ck Draw ® GX in the E xtensions Man ager. Make sure EPSON Monito r3 and SC 980 are enabled, and then restart your Macintos h.
39 Printing is t oo slow. To achieve your printer’s fastest speed, a USB con nection is re commended, where poss ible. Your print e r prints faster than your parallel port can trans fer da ta, so prin ting m ay appe ar to pause while data transfer ca tches up.
40 ■ Set the p a per thickne ss lever to the 0 positi on. Set the leve r to the + positi on when you print on thicker paper or e nvelopes. You may also need to turn off High Speed in the prin ter sof tware. Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ Make sure your pape r isn’t damp or curled, or loaded face do wn.
41 ■ Make sure the Media Ty pe setting match es th e pape r you loade d. See page 19 for guidel ines. ■ Make sure your paper isn ’t damaged, old, dirty , or loaded face down. If it i s , reload a new stack o f paper with th e printable side up; it is usuall y whiter or sh inier than t he other s ide.
42 Problems with P aper Feeding Too many copies are printing. Make sure the Copies set tings is co rrect in both your ap plication and the printer software. Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ■ If the paper do esn’t eject fully, yo u may hav e set th e wr ong pap er size .
43 Solving Miscellaneo us Printout Problems The ma rgins are i ncorrect . ■ Make sure the pa per settings i n your printer software a re correct for your paper size . See the electroni c Reference Guide for instruction s. ■ Check your s oftware documentatio n for instruction s on selecting the correct margins for your paper size .
44 Uninstalling Printer Software If you need to uninstall and then reinstall yo ur printer softw a re, such as when you upgrade your computer operating s ystem, follow thes e steps: Uninstalling Win dows Software 1. Double-click My Computer , then double-click the Control Panel icon.
