Introduction The EPSO N ® Styl us ® 1500 is an a fforda ble, h igh-q uality ink jet printer that produces re alistic grayscale images, sharp text, and line art at a res olution of 720 × 720 dpi. The Stylus 1500 comes equipped for printing in bla ck ink; however, you can easily upgrade it to print in color with the optional Color Upgrade Kit.
Refer to the Reference Guide for instructions on op erating and maintaining your printer, as well as for troubles hooting tips and technical specifications. Getting the Most Out of Your Printer The printer supports a wide variety o f settings t hat let you improve print quality or speed up printing.
Special Pape rs The type of pape r you use is very import ant. Although you get good results with plain bond pape r, you will get bet ter results by using coat ed papers because they do not absorb as much ink.

Imp orta nt Safety Inst ruct ions Before using your printer, read the following safety instructions to make sure you use it safely and effectively: ❑ Turn off and unplug the printer before cleaning. Clean wi th a damp cloth only. Do not sp ill liquid on the printer.
Chapter 1 Setting Up the Printer As you follow the inst ructions in this chapter to se t up your prin ter, re fer to the illu stration s on the inside front cover to identify the printer’s components.
Avoid locations subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity. Also kee p the printe r away from direct sunlight, heat source s, and sources of electromagnetic interferen ce, such as the base units of cordless telephones. Always leave adequate space around the printer to accommodate its cables.
Attaching the Paper Support and Ou tput Tray 1. Attach the paper su pport by placing the hole on the right side of the support over the right mounting post on the printer. Then push the notch on the left s ide onto the le ft mounting post. 2. Attach the output tray by fit ting the notches on the tray over the mounting posts, as shown below.
Plugging In and Turning On the Printer Follow these steps to plug in and turn on the printer: 1. Mak e sure you h ave rem oved a ll prote ctiv e pac king materials from inside the printer. (See page 1-2 for more information.) 2. Make su re the printer is turned off by checking the position of the Operate button.
Installing the Black Ink Cartridge Follow th e steps in this section to install your printer’s black ink ca rtridge. w Warni ng: The ink cartridge is a self-contained unit. Under ordinary use, ink will not leak fr om a cartridg e. If ink gets on you r hands , wash them thoroughly with soap and water.
4. Insert the end of the cartridge with the foil plug int o the ink compartment followi ng the instructions on the cartri dge. Push the cartridg e all the way into the co mpartment. You will f eel s ome r esistan ce. When the cartridg e is correctly insta lled, the Ink Out O light goes off.
The first time you install the ink cartridge, the printer automatically charge s the ink delivery system. This t akes about two minutes . c Caution: During the ink charging process, the Pause light flashes. Never turn off the printer whi le the Pause light is flashing.
Installing the Co lor Print Head Foll ow th ese steps to in stal l th e color prin t h ead: 1. Make su re the printer is turned on and th e Data light is off. 2. Open the printer cover using the notch in the middle of t he cover. 3. Press the Pause button to turn the Pause light on.
5. Raise the b lue print head unit release lever as far as i t will go. 6. Remove the protective cover from the print head compartment. c Caution: Do no t touch the carriage inside the printer; this may damage the printer.
7. Remove the print head un it from the storage box by pressing on the notch as shown. c Caution: Do not touch the print head or the electrical contacts on the back and bottom of the unit; otherwise, you may damag e the print head.
9. Press down the blue print he ad unit releas e lever until it clicks into place . Note: Make sure that the Data and Paper Out lights are not flashing. If they are, remove the print head unit and reinsert it prop erly. c Caution: Do not remove the color print hea d unit once you’ve installed it.
1. Lift up the ink cartridge clamp. Then remove the protective sheet from the cartridge hol der. 2. Open the ink cartrid ge package. Ne xt, remove the tape seal from the top of the cartridge as shown. c Caution: Do not remove the tape seal from the bottom of the cartridge; ink will leak out.
3. Lower the cartridge into the print head unit with the label face up and the arrow mark pointing to the rear. Do not push down on th e ink cartridge.
5. Press the Alt button again to return the print head unit to its home (far righ t) position. (Even if you do not press Alt , the printer moves the print head unit back to its home position about 30 seconds after you ins tall the cartridge.
If You Ar e New to Colo r Printing Color printing with the EPSON Stylus 1500 produces amazing images, whether you pri nt text, graphics, li ne drawings, photographs, or documents containing many different image types.
If you need extreme precision in matc hing colors, you can use a color ca libra tion system av ailabl e with many softwa re applica tions. If you use a sc anner, make sure your scanni ng software is set to the correct set ting for ink jet printers to he lp you match colors .
2. Raise the output tray until it locks in the upright position. 3. Slide th e rig ht edg e guide to the left as far as it will go. Then slide the left edge guide to match the width of you r paper.
4. Move the center support to a point midway between the edg e gui des . Th en gent ly exten d th e rear edge guid e un til i t sto ps. 5. Fan a stack of paper; then tap it on a flat surface to even the edg es. 6. Load the stack of paper, printable side down, all the way into the sheet feeder.
Note: The sheet feeder can hold up to 100 sheets of 17-lb (64 g/m 2 ) plain paper. Do no t load paper above the arrow mark, which is located on the inside surface of the edge guide.
8. Lower the output tray t o the printing p osition. Make sure that the rear edge guide of the paper tray is positioned under the output tray. The rear edge guide must be under the ou tput tray to allow room for the p aper loaded in the sheet feede r and to prevent a paper jam.
2. Wh ile h olding dow n the Load/Eject button, press th e Operate button to turn on the printer. Wait for the paper to load, th en release th e buttons. The 360 dpi self tes t begins by printing in black ink on the first and last lines of t he first she et of paper to measure the page le ngt h.
Connecting the Printer to Your PC You nee d a shielded, twisted-pair parallel cable to connect y our printer to you r computer. T he cable must have a D-SUB, 25-pin male connector for your c omputer and a 36-pin, Centr onics compatib le connector for the printer’s parall el interface.
Chapter 2 Installing and Using the Printer Driver This chapter describes how to install the Windows p rinter driver and us e it to control printe r set tings such as media t ype, document type , printing mode, and halftoning. (To install a driver for DOS programs, see page 2-7.
3. Insert the Windows printer drive r diskette in a diskette drive. 4. In t he F ile menu , se lect Run . You see the Run dialog box. 5. In th e Comman d Line box, type A:SETUP (or B:SETUP if you inserted t he diske tte in drive B). Pres s Enter or clic k OK .
Changing the defa ult print er or pr inter po rt If you want to change your default printer in Windows or if you want to use your printer on a different printer port, follow these steps: 1. In the M ain window, double-click t he Control Panel icon. 2.
Installing the Driver for Windows 95 Fol low the se st eps to i nsta ll the p rinte r softw are for Windows 95. Firs t you’ll install the driver using the Windows 95 plug and-play capabilities; then you’ll run th e EPSON Printe r Driver Setup p rogram to install the printer driver utilitie s and create an EPSON folder o n your hard disk .
9. Make sure yo ur printer mode l name is selected in the Models pull-down list and click OK . 10. At the next screen you can give the pri nter a unique name. We recommend that you k eep the model name, but y ou can type a new one in the Printer name box, if desired.
18. The installation program beg ins copying the files to y our hard disk and shows the progres s of the installation as it proceeds. After the status bar disappe ars, the driver continues installing fo r a minute o r so. Wait until the EPSON folder and EPSON Printer Drive r Setup confirmation screen appear.
Insta llin g a Drive r for DO S Progra ms Most DOS so ftware programs include drive rs for EPSON ESC/P 2 pr inte rs. If t he St ylus 1500 dr iver i s not listed in your software , choose the first printer available in the lists below.
Using the Windows Printer Driver The printer drive r contains a variety of settings that allow you to control y our print job. For e xample, you can se lect the media type, res olution, document type , and halftoning settings that are best for the ty pe of docume nt you are printing.
3. Choose EPSON Stylus 1500 from the list of Installed Printers. 4. Choose Setup . You see the printer driver dialog box shown on pag e 2-11 . Accessin g the driver fro m Win dows 95 Follow th ese steps t o access t he driver from the W indows 95 My Computer group: 1.
If you choose Print , you first see a Print dialog box similar to the one sho wn below (depending on your s oftware program). The Print dialog box contains the settings y ou change most often, including the number of copies and the print range. To access the printer driver settings, choose the Printe r , Setup , or Opt ions button.
Using the Driver Dialog Box However you accessed t he printer driver, you see the followi ng dialog box: (If you do not see this dialog box, the driver has not been installed correctly. See page 2-1 for i nstructions on instal ling the driver.) At the top of the screen are tabs that open various dialog boxes.

Note: The av ailability of optio ns or se ttings in a dialog b ox may de pend on the setting selected in another dialog box. Therefore, you may not see all options or settings listed, or some of them m ay be grayed out. If you want to return all the printer driver settings to their factory defaults, choose Defaults .
Note: If you selected a country other than the United States in the Windows Control Panel International utili ty, the default paper size may be different. In additi on, the mea surement units displayed i n the printable area example (benea th the Paper Size box) may be metric.
Copies Allows you to speci fy the number of copies, whether to collate them (print them in sets), or whether y ou want to print t he page s in reverse order (from las t page to first). Normally y ou should se lect these three settings from the Print dialog box in your s oftware, n ot with the driver.
You achieve the best re sults using the Automatic option. Howeve r, if you prefer t o set the document ty pe manually, follow these guideli nes: ❑ Select Pres entation when you are printing documents contai ning many graphi c elements, such as charts in presentations.
Ink Specifies Color (CMYK) or Mo noc hrome p rinti ng. C MYK refers to the printer’s colored inks: cyan (blue -green), magenta, yellow, and black (K). These colo rs are combined to form any of 16 million colors . Sele ct Color ( CMYK ) only if you have installed the optional Color Upg rade Kit and your documen t includ es color.
If you prefer t o set the halftoning method manually , follow these guidelines: ❑ Use No halftoning to speed printing for text or monochrom e line art. Do not use it when printing in col or. ❑ Error Diff usion is b est for photographic images. It creates color by randomly dist ributing the dots, mak ing edges and colors softer.

When spee d is important and draft quality is good enough, use Draft - 180 dpi resolution. Note: Printing at lower resolutions also conserves ink. Media Type Sets up the printer for the type of pap er you loaded.
❑ EPSON high-quality glossy paper . Use th is pap er wi th 720 dpi to p roduce camera-ready composites. When printing on glossy paper, use only EPSON high-quality glossy pape r. ❑ EPSON transparency film . When printing transparenci es, use only EPSON transparencies.
Image Settings The Image Setting s options allow you t o adjust the brightnes s, contrast, and color ma tching features of your printed images. It is be st t o let th e pr int er driv er’s Automatic Document Type setting select the appropriate image settings for you.
Color Matching Controls the printer’s color correction fe atures base d on the se lecte d Docume nt Type . C olor Matching is automatically se t to the most appropriate sett ing when yo u select a particular document type or us e the Automatic sett ing.
Chapter 3 Using the Printer Driver Utilities This chapter explains how to manag e print jobs that you se nd to the printer using th e EPSON Spool Manage r. It also tells you how to cal ibrate the printer using the EPSON Printer Calibrati on Utilit y if v ertical li nes in your pr inted outp ut become misa ligned .
The Despooler stat us box, which is similar to the one shown below, allows you to monitor t he progress of the print job and canc el ( ), p ause ( ), or res tart ( ) t he pr int job . If you do not want the Despooler status box to appear each time you print, d ouble-cli ck the EPSON Spool Manager icon to op en it.
Calibrating the Pri nter Your printer has be en calibrated at the factory so that vertical lines in your te xt an d grap hics are p roper ly align ed. If you notice misaligned images in printou ts, howe ver, you can calibrate the printer with the E PSON Printer Calibration Utility.
For each pattern you selected, the printer prints a Test Alignment Sheet of multiple vertical lines. In most samples, the ve rtical lines are slightly misaligned.
