Save all pack ing an d protective mat er ials , inc lud ing the pr otective locking clips on the pape r tensio n unit and the trans porta tion scre w, in ca se y ou need to sh ip the pr inte r in the futur e. I t sho uld always be tran sported in its original packaging.
2. Make sure the print he ad is at the ribbo n installatio n position as shown below . If the prin t head is not at t his position, slide t h e print head to the corr ect pos itio n (the ind ented port ion of t he paper tension unit). w Warning Never move t he printhead wh ile the pri nter is turned on; this can dam ag e the print e r.
4. Hold the cartridg e s o that the r ibbon-tigh te n ing knob is facin g up and is on the lef t. P lac e the bot to m ed ge of the cart rid ge int o the pri nter s o tha t the no tch o n each en d of the c artrid ge fits ove r the s mall p eg on e ach s ide o f the pr inte r.
7. Slide the prin t hea d from side to si de to make sur e it moves sm ooth ly . 8. Replace th e printer co ver by first inserting t he fr ont tabs int o the slots near the front of the prin te r; the n lower it until it locks into pla ce. 1-7 1-8 L S unf l o wer - P Re v .
9. Insert th e paper se parator into the paper guide as shown below. Note: You may fi nd it easy to insert the pap er separator one side at a time. You need no t separate t h e paper guid e and the pap er separator, in case you need to ship t he printer.
11. Lift t he paper path guide, and rest it against the paper guide. Note: Always close the printer cover befo re printing. The p rinter stops printi ng when the c over is open. Pl ug g i n g i n th e Pr i nte r 1. M ake su re the printer is tu rned off .
R unni ng t he S el f Tes t You can run a self test on the prin te r in letter q uality or d raft mode , with ei ther co ntinuous paper o r single sheets. 4. Move the left edge guide until it locks in plac e next to the ar row guide mark. Then a djust the r ight edg e guid e to match the width o f your pa per. c Cau tion: Run the s e l f tes t us i n g pa pe r at lea s t 360 m m (14 inc he s ) wide; oth erwise, the print head prints directly on the platen.
6. Insert a sheet of paper bet wee n the ed ge guid es unt il it meets resistance. Make sure you adjust the edge guides to ma tc h the width of yo ur paper. Afte r a few seco nds, t he pr inter feeds the paper to the loadin g position and begin s printi ng the se lf test.

Us i ng Co nt i nuous P a per The printer’ s built-in paper -hand ling sys tem allows you to load continuous pa per using the standard rear push tractor. In additio n to this, yo u can load c o ntinuous paper thro ugh the fron t or bot to m usin g on e or mor e opt ion al t ra ct or u n i ts .
Follow the steps below to load paper with the rear push t ractor : 1. M ake su re the printer is tu rned off . 2. Rem ove the pri nter c over an d pape r guid e. 3. Make sure t he pape r re lease lever i s set to t he rea r pus h trac tor position. 4.
5. Slide the lef t sprocket to the left marg in of the pape r usin g the scale o n t he pr inter as s how n be low. (Pr inting start s at t he “ 0 ” mark . See the App e ndix fo r more info rmatio n on the l eft ma rgin po siti on.) The n sli de th e righ t spro cket to ma tch the width of yo ur p aper, but do not l ock it.

If you feed paper through th e bottom paper slot, use a printer stan d that h as a lar g e eno u gh open in g for p aper to fe ed from the bot tom w ith o u t ob s tru c tion .

3. Open the fron t paper g ui d e an d rem ove it by gras pin g both s ide s and pulling it straight out of the printer. 4. Press the tract or’s lock tabs, tilt it up, and lift it out of the printer.
5. Replace th e fr ont pape r guide by sliding it along t he trac k un til it locks in place. 6. Clos e th e fro n t p a p er g u i d e . I ns tal l i ng th e tr a cto r i n th e p ul l pos i ti on Before you lo a d continuous paper using th e pull tractor position, you must firs t pur chase the optio nal pull tr acto r.

5. Replace the paper guide . You are n ow re ad y to load c ontinu o us paper wit h the pu ll trac t or . See “ L oading paper wit h the pull tractor” o n page 2-24 or “L oa ding pape r w ith the push/pull tractor combinat ion” on page 2-27 for mor e d eta ils.
5. Replace the clear plastic paper-tension unit by placing the small peg s in to the notche s on each si de of the pri nte r. Press dow n until it locks into place. 6. Slide the prin t hea d back and forth t o make s ure it can move freely. If it cann ot, the paper-t en s ion unit wa s inc orre ctly installed.

Label s Whe n select ing labels fo r printing, alw ays ch oose the type mounted on a c ontinuous backing sheet with sprocket holes for use with a tra ctor. Do not try to print labels as single s h eet s because the s hin y backing sh eet will not feed properly.

U sin g Q u ie t M o d e The Quiet mo de allows you to print with les s nois e, howev er printing spe ed is reduced . To enter Q uiet m ode, ho ld do wn the Font and Co nd en s ed buttons while turning on the printer . You can o nly set this mode when you tur n on the printer.
4. Press th e Load/Eject [ ↑ ] button to move the loadin g position dow n on the pa ge, o r pre ss the LF/FF [ ↓ ] bu tt on to mo ve the loading positio n up on the page. 5. For contin u ous pap er , mark a poin t 6. 5 mm abov e the perforation and position the mark on the paper so it aligns with the top of the plastic ribbon guide.
Note: ❏ The print er h as a min imum and a maximum loading position.
