Important Instructions Safety Instructions Read and follow these instructions to en sure safe use of this pr oduct. Make sure you keep this guide for future reference. Also, be sure to follow all warni ngs and instruct ions marked on the product. ❏ Use only the power cord supplied with the product and do not use the cord with any other equipment.
❏ The power-supply cords should be placed to avoid abrasi ons, cuts, fraying, crimping, and kinking. Do not place objects on top o f the power-supply cords and do not allow the power- supply cords to be stepped on or run o ver.
❏ Do not press too hard on the scanne r glass when placing the origi nals. ❏ During the life of yo ur product it may be necessary to replace the waste ink pad when it has become full.

Paper Handling Introduction to Using, Loading, and Storing Media You can achieve good results with most types of plain pa per. However, coated papers prov ide superior prints because they absorb less ink.

D Fan a stack of paper, then tap it on a flat surface to even the edges . E Load the paper with the printable side up, against the right side of the rear paper feed.
Note: ❏ Leave enough space in front of the prod uct for the paper to be fully ej ected. ❏ For plain paper, do not load paper above the H arrow mark inside the edge guide. For Epson special media, make sure the number of sheets is less than the limi t specified for the media.
D Load envelopes short edge first with the flap facing down and to the left. Then slide the edge guide agains t the left edge of the envelopes, but not too tight ly. E Flip the feeder guard back. Note: ❏ The thickness of envelopes and their ability to fold vary widely.
Placing Originals A Open the document cover and place your original face-down on the scanner glass. B Slide the original to the corner. Note: See the following sections if any problems occur with the scanning area or th e sca nning direction when using EPSON Scan.
Printing Printer Driver and Status Monitor The printer driver lets y ou choose from a wide variety o f settin gs to get th e best printing results. The status monit or and the printer utilit ies help you check the prod uct and keep it in to p operati ng condition.
❏ Windows XP : Click Start , Control Panel , ( Printers and Other Hardware ,) t hen Printers and Faxes . Select the product, then click Printing Prefer ences on th e File me nu. From the shortcut icon on the taskbar Right-click the product icon on the taskbar, then sel ect Printer Settings .
Basic Operations Basic printing Note: ❏ The screen shots in this section may va ry depending on the mod el. ❏ Before you print, load paper properly. & “Loading Paper” on page 19 & “Loading Envelopes” on page 21 ❏ Refer to the section belo w for the printable area.
E Select Portrait (tall) or Landscape (wide) to change the orientation of your print. Note: Select Landscape when printing on envelopes. F Select the appropriat e Paper Type sett ing. & “Paper type settings from the printer driver” on page 18 Note: Print quality is automatically adju sted for the selected Paper Type.
B Access the Print dialog box. & “Accessing the printer driver for Mac OS X” on page 25 Note: If the simplified status mo nitor is displayed, click the Show Details button (for Mac OS X 10.7) or the d button (for Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.5 ) to extend this dialog box.
F Select Print Settings from the pop-up menu. G Select the appropriate Media Type setting. & “Paper type settings from the printer driver” on page 18 H Click Print to start printing. Canceling printing If you need to cancel printing, follow the instructions in the appropri ate section below.
B Click the Print Queue button. The Window s Spooler appears. C Right-click on the job you want to cancel and then select Cancel . For Mac OS X Follow the steps below to cancel a print job. A Click your product icon in the Dock. B In the Document Name list, select the document which is printing.
Note: The availability of this software varies depending on the product. Starting Epson Easy Photo Print For Windows ❏ Double-cli ck the Epson Easy Photo Print icon on the desktop. ❏ For Windows 7 and Vista: Click the start button, point to All Programs , click Epson Software , and then click Easy Photo Print .
Paper Size Plain paper Legal, Letter, A4, B5, A5, A6 Epson Bright White Ink Jet Paper A4 Note: ❏ This feature is not available for Mac OS X. ❏ This feature may not be av ailable at some settings. ❏ This feature may not be available when the produ ct is ac cessed over a network or i s used as a sh ared printer.
Fit to page printing Lets you automatically enlarge or reduce the size of you r do cument to fit the paper size select ed in the printer driver. Note: This feature may not be av ailable at some settings. Product settings for Wind ows A Access the printer se ttings.
Pages per sheet printing Lets you use the printer driv er to print two or four pages on a si ngle sheet of paper. Note: This feature may not be av ailable at some settings.
Sharing the Product for Printing Setup for Windows These instructions tell you h ow to set up your product so other users on the network can share it. First you will set up the product as a shared printer on th e computer directly conne cted to it. Then you wil l add the product to each network comp uter that will access it.
If you want to aut omatically download printer drivers for compu ters that are running different versions of Windows, click Addition al Drivers and select the environment and the operating system s of the other computers. Click OK , then insert the pr oduct software disk.
B Windows 7 and Vista: Click the Add a printer button. Windows XP: Click the Add a printer button. The Add Pri nter Wizard appears. Click the Next button. C Windows 7 and Vista: Click Add a network, wire less or Bluetooth printer , and then click Next .
Scanning Let’s Try Scanning Starting a Scan Let’s scan a d ocument to get used to the process. A Place your original(s). & “Placing Originals” on page 23 B Start Epson Scan. ❏ Windows: Double-click the Epson Scan icon on the desktop. ❏ Mac OS X: Select Applications > Epson Software > EPSON Scan .
D Select Text/Line Art as the Document Type setting. E Click Preview . F Click Scan . User’s Guide Scanning 39.
G Click OK . Your scanned image is saved. Image Adjustment Features Epson Scan offers a variety of settin gs for improving color, sharpness, contrast, and other as pects affecting image quality. See the Help for more details on Epson Scan. Histogram Provides a graphical interf ace for adjusting highlight, shadow, and gamma levels individually.
Tone Correcti on Provides a graphic al interfac e for adjusting tone levels individually. Image Adjustment Adjusts brightness and contrast and the balance of red, gr een, and blue colors i n the overall image.
Color Restoration Restores the colors in faded photos automatically. Backlight Corre ction Removes shado ws from photos that hav e too much ba ckground lig ht. Dust Removal Removes dust marks fr om your originals automatically. Text Enhancement Enhances text recognition when scanning text documents.
Basic Scanning from Your Computer Scanning in Full Auto Mode Full Auto Mode lets yo u scan quickly and easi ly, without select ing any settings or pr eviewing your image. This mode is useful when you need to scan your originals at 100% si ze. Note: See the Help for more details on Epson Scan.
Note: If the Show this dialog box before next scan check box is cleared, Epson Scan starts scanning imme diatel y without displaying this screen. To return to this s creen, click Cancel in the Scanning dialog box during scanning. D Click Scan . Epson Scan star ts scanning in Full Auto Mode.
B Start Epson Scan. & “Starting Epson Scan Driver” on page 57 C Select Home Mode from the Mode list. D Select the Document Type setting. E Select the Image Type setting. F Click Preview . & “Previewing and Adjusting the Scan Area” on page 50 G Adjust the exposure, brightness, and other image quality settings.
I In the File Save Settings window, se lect the Type setting and the n click OK . Note: If the Show this dialog box before next scan check box is cleared, Epson Sca n starts sc anning immediately without displaying the File Save Settings window . Your scanned image is saved.
C Select Office Mode from the Mode list. D Select the Image Type setting. E Select the size of your or iginal as the Size setting. F Select an appropriate reso lution for your original(s ) as th e Resolution setting. G Click Scan . H In the File Save Settings window, se lect the Type setting and then click OK .
Scanning in Professional Mode Professional Mode gives you total control of yo ur scanning settings and lets yo u check the changes y ou have made in a preview image. This mode is re commended for advanced users. Note: See the Help for more details on Epson Scan.
C Select Professi onal Mod e from the Mode list. D Select the type of original(s) yo u are scanning as the Document Type setting. E If you select Reflective as the Document Type setting, select Photo or Docume nt as the Auto Exposure Type setting. F Select the Image Type setting.
H Click Preview to preview your image(s). The Preview wi ndow opens and displays your image(s). & “Previewing and Adjusting the Scan Area” on page 50 I Select the size of th e scanned image(s) as the Target Size setting if necessary.
Creating a marquee A marquee is a moving dotted line th at appears on the edges of your prev iew image to indicate the scan area. Do one of the following to draw a marquee. ❏ To draw the marquee manually, position the pointer in the area where you want to place the corner of your marquee and click.
Note: ❏ To restrict the movement of the marque e to vertical o r horizontal only, hol d down the Shift key as you move the marquee. ❏ To restrict the size of the marquee to th e current proportions, hold down the Shift key as you resize the marquee.
E Click Scan . F Select PDF as the Type setting, and then click OK . Your scanned image is saved. User’s Guide Scanning 53.
Scanning Multiple Documents to a PDF File First of all, place your do cument and start Epson Scan. & “Starting a Scan” on page 38 A Select Professi onal Mod e from the Mode list. B Click Preview . C Adjust the exposure, brightness, and other image quality settings.
D Click Scan . E Select PDF as the Type setting, and then click OK . Note: If the Show Add Page dialog after scanning check box is cleared, Epso n Scan automa tically save s your docum ent without displaying the Add Page Confirmation window. F Epson Scan starts scanning your document.
H Click Edit page or Save File . Edit page Select this button if you want to delete or reorder any of th e pages. Then use the icons on the bottom of the Editing Page window to select, rotate , reorder, and delete pages. See the Help for more details on Epson Scan.
A Select Home Mode from the Mode list. B Select Photograph as the Document Type s etting. C Click Preview . D Adjust the exposure, brightness, and other image quality settings. See the Help fo r more details on Epson Scan. E Click Scan . F Select JPEG as the Type setting, and the n click OK .
How to start ❏ Windows: Double-cli ck the EP SON Scan icon on the desktop. Or, select the start button icon or Start > All Programs or Progr ams > EPSO N > EPSON Scan > EPSON Scan . ❏ Mac OS X: Select Applications > Epso n Software > EPSON Scan .
❏ Text with tightly spaced characters or line pitch ❏ Text that is in tables or underlined ❏ Cursive or italic fonts, and font sizes less than 8 points ❏ Folded or wrinkled document s See the ABBYY FineReader help for more details.
Refilling Ink Ink Bottle Safety Instru ctions, Precautions, and Specifications Safety instructions Observe the following when h andling the ink: ❏ Keep ink bottles and the ink tank unit out of the reach of children. Do not allow children to drink from or handle the ink bottles and ink bottle cap.
❏ Do not continue printing when the ink level is below the lower line on the ink tank. Continued use of the product when the ink level is below the lower line could d amage the product. Epson recommends fill ing all ink tanks to the upper line when th e product is no t operating to reset the in k l evels.
A Make sure the P light is on, but not flashing. B Unhook the ink tank unit from the product and lay it down. Note: Do not pull the tubes. C Open the ink tank unit cover, and then remove the cap of the ink tank. Note: ❏ Be careful not to spill any ink.
c Important: Install the ink bottle cap tigh tly; otherwise ink may leak. Note: Do not dispose of the top of the cap. If any ink remains in the ink bottle after re filling the tank, use the top of the cap to seal the ink bottle cap. E Refill the ink tank with the correct colo red ink up to the upper line on the ink tank.
F Install the cap onto the ink tank secure ly. G Repeat steps 3 to 6 for each ink bottl e. H Close the ink tank unit cover. I Hook the ink tank unit onto the product.
Maintaining Your Product and Software Checking the Print Head Nozzles If you find that the printout is unexpe ctedly faint or that dots are missing, you may b e able to identify the problem by checking the print head nozzl es.
Cleaning the Print Head If you find that the printout is unexpect edly faint or that dots are missing, yo u may be able to solve these problems by cleaning the print head, which ensures that the nozzles are delivering ink properly.
C Access the Epson Printer Utility 4. & “Accessing the printer driver for Mac OS X” on page 25 D Click the Head Cleaning icon. E Follow the on-screen instructions.
D Click the Print Head Alignmen t icon. E Follow the on-screen instructions to align the print h ead. Replacing Ink inside the Ink Tubes If there is still banding or missing colors in the printouts even after running Head Cleaning several times, you may need to replace the ink inside the ink tubes to solv e the problem.
Using the Power Ink Flushi ng utility for Mac OS X Follow the steps below to use the Power Ink Flushing utility. A Make sure that the transportation lock is set to the unlocked position. B Make sure that no warnings or errors are indicated in the control panel.
C Select Off , 30 minutes , 1 hour , 2 hours , 4 hours , 8 hours , or 12 hours as the Power Off Ti mer setting. D Click the Apply button. Checking the Number of Sheets of Paper Fed You can check the number of sh eets of paper fed from the printer driver.
c Important: ❏ Be careful to keep water away from the electronic components. ❏ Do not spray the inside of the product with lubricants. ❏ Unsuitable oils can damage the mechanism. Contact your dealer or a qualified service person if lubrication is needed.
E Open the scanner unit. Secure the print head with tape, as shown be low, then close the scanner unit. F Set the transportation lock to the locked position. G Unhook the ink tank unit from the product and lay it down, and then make sure to install the cap onto the ink tank securely.
H Install the covers that came with your product over the protruding parts of the ink tank, and then hook the ink tank unit onto the pr oduct. I Flip the feeder guard forward, close the paper support, and then flip the feeder gu ard back and clo se the output tray.
Note: Store the covers of the installed ink tanks at the side of the product for use when transporting the prod uct. Checking and Installing Your Software Checking the softw are in stalled on your computer To use the functions described in this User’s Gu ide, you need to install the following software.
B Double-click the Epson Software folder in the Applications folder and check the contents. Note: ❏ The Applications folder contains software provided by third parties. ❏ To check that the printer driver is installed, click Syst em Preferences on the Apple menu and then click Print & Scan (for Mac OS X 10.
F Do one of the followi ng. Windows 7: Click Uninstall/Change or Uninstall . Windows Vista: Click Uninstall/Change or Uninstall , and then click Continu e in the User Account Control window.
Note: If you uninstall the printer driver and th e name of your prod uct remains in the Prin t & Scan (for Mac OS X 10.7) or Print & Fax (for Mac OS X 10.
Troubleshooting for Printing/Copying Diagnosing the Problem Troubleshooting product problems is best handl ed in two step s: first diagnose the probl em, then apply likely solutions until the problem is fixed.
When you access EPSON Status Monito r 3, the following window appears: Note: If EPSON Status Monitor 3 does not appear , access the prin ter driver and click the Maintena nce tab and then the Extended Settings button. In the Exte nded Settings window, c heck the Enable EPSON Status Monitor 3 check box.
B Click the EPSON Status M onitor icon. The EPSON Status Monitor appears. Paper Jams ! Caution: Never touch the buttons on the control pane l while your hand is inside the product. c Important: Be careful not to pull the cables or ink tubes, or touc h other components inside the pr oduct unnecessarily.
Removing jammed paper fr om inside the product A Open the scanner unit. c Important: Do not lift up the scanner unit wh en the d ocument cover is open. B Remove all of the paper inside, including any torn pieces. C Close the scanner unit . If the ja m med paper remains near the output tray, carefu lly remove the paper.
Preventing pape r jams If your paper jams frequently, c heck the following. ❏ The paper is smooth, not curled or wrinkled. ❏ You are using high-quality paper. ❏ The printable side of th e paper is face up in the rear paper feed. ❏ The paper stack was fanned before loading.
& “Incorrect or miss ing colors” on page 83 & “Blurry or smeared print ” on page 84 Horizontal banding ❏ Make sure the printable side (the wh iter or glossier side) of the paper is face up in the rear paper feed. ❏ Run the Head Cleaning utility to clear any clogged ink nozzles.
❏ Make sure the transp ortation lock is in the unlocked position. ❏ For Windows, clear the Grayscale setting i n the Main window in your pri nter driver. For Mac OS X, clear the Grayscale setting in Pr int Settings in the Prin t dialog box in your printer driver.
Miscellaneous Printout Problems Incorrect or garbled characters ❏ Clear any stalled print jobs. & “Canceling printing” on page 29 ❏ Turn off the product and computer. Make sure the product’s interface cable is secure ly plugged in. ❏ Uninstall the printer driver, then reinstall i t.
Inverted image ❏ For Windows, clear the Mirror Image check box from the More Options wind ow of your printer driver, or turn off the Mirror Image setting in your application.
❏ If you print continuously for an exte nded period, the printing may be extremely slow. This is to slow down the printing speed and prevent the product mechanism from ov erheating and bei ng damaged. If this happens, you can continue to print, but we recomme n d stopping and leaving the product idle for at leas t 30 minutes with the power on.
❏ If too many copies of a file are being printed , check the Copies setting in yo ur printer driver as follows, and also check in your application. For Windows, check the Copies setting on the Main window. Mac OS X, check the Copies setting in the Print dialog.
❏ Users of Windows can clear any stalled print jobs fro m the Windows Spooler. & “Canceling printing” on page 29 ❏ Uninstall the printer driver, then reinstall i t.
The following dialog box appears. Select the following check boxes and print speed may be increased. ❏ High Speed Copies ❏ Always spool RAW datatype ❏ Page Rendering Mode ❏ Print as Bitmap For more details on each item, see the onl ine help.
For Windows, select the Quiet Mode check box in the Main window of your printer driver. For Mac OS X, select On from the Quiet Mode. To display the Quiet Mode, click through the following menus: System Preferences , Print & Scan (for Mac OS X 10.7) or Print & Fax (for Mac OS X 10.
Troubleshooting for Scanning Problems Indicated by Messages on the LCD Screen or Status Light ❏ Make sure the product is connected to your computer properly. ❏ Turn off the product and turn it on again. If the proble m is not solved, the product may be malfunctioning, or the light sourc e in the scanner unit may need to be replac ed.
Using the button Note: Depending on the product, the scanning functi on may not be available when using the button. ❏ Check if you have assigned a program to the button. & “Epson Event Manager” on page 58 ❏ Make sure Epson Scan and Epson Ev ent Manager are installed correc tly.
❏ Windows XP: Click the Exce ptions tab, and then confirm that the check box fo r EEventManager Application is selected in the Programs and Services list.
❏ Adjust the Threshold setting. Home Mode: Select Black&White as the Image Type setting, click the Brightness button, and then try adjusting th e Threshold setting. Office Mode: Select Black&White as the Image Type setting, and then try adjusting the Threshold setting.
The scanning area or dire ction is unsatisfactory The edges of your orig inal are not scanned ❏ If you are scanning in Full Auto Mode, or using thumbn ail preview in Home Mode or Professional Mode, move the document or photo 6 mm (0.2 inch) away from the horizo ntal and vertical edges of the scanner glass to avoid cropping.
Problems Remain After Trying All Solutions If you have tried all the solutions and have not sol ved the problem, initialize the Epson Scan settings. Click Configuration , select the Other tab, and then click Reset All .
