1 Introduction The E psonN et 802 .11b W ireless P rint S erver lets you print fr om any computer in yo ur existing networ k without additional wiring. E ven without a network, you c an print from a wireless-equipped Windows ® PC or lap top, Macintosh, ® App le ® iB ook, ™ or P ow erBo ok, ® from di stances up to 120 feet.
2 Wireless Networking The E psonNet 802 .11b Wireless P r int Se r ver is designed for u se in a small office , home, or school n etwork. On a wi red netw ork li ke the one illustrat ed below , the computers and other equipment share information and Internet access thr o ugh a series o f cables.

4 Windows System Requirements F or printing wi th the E psonN et 802.11b W ireless P rint Server , make sure each compute r meets the following requiremen ts: ■ A M icrosof t ® Windo ws compatibl e PC or laptop with a P entium ® proc essor or late r , 200 M Hz or faster r ecommend ed ■ Windo ws 95, Windo ws 98, Windo ws Me, W indows NT ® 4.
5 Macintosh System Requirements F or printing wi th the E psonN et 802.11b W ireless P rint Server , make sure each Macintosh meets the f ollowing requirements: ■ An Apple iBook, iMac, ™ P owerB ook G3 or G4, P ower M ac G4 C ube, or P owe r Mac G3 or G4 ■ Mac ® OS 8.
6 Where To Get Information U se thi s booklet to set up and configure your E PSON printer and E psonNet 802.11b W ireless P rint Server . Please follow the se guidelines : Cautions must be observed to avoid damage to your equipment. N otes contain import ant information about your print server .
7 Setting Up Your Print Server This chapter descri bes how t o unp a ck and set up your print server . Y ou can l ocate the printer and pr int se rver anywhere in your home o r offi ce.
8 Unpacking the Print Server T ake e verythi ng out of the box and make s ure you have the items shown below . You wil l also need a parallel cabl e to connect th e print serve r to your printe r. Make sure you r cable follow s the specificat ions li sted on page 4.
9 Connecting the Print Server After you have verified that the pr inter is working cor rectly , you ’ re ready to conne ct the print server . 1. P ress the P power button to turn off your printer . 2. Slide the print ser ver into the base and press firmly to attach it.
10 5. Connect the powe r supply to the print ser ver . 6. Plug the AC adapter into an electrical outlet. Both the green and yellow lights come on for a moment and then go out.
11 Configuring Wireless Printing for Windows This chapter explains how to i nstall the software and s et up the Ep sonNet 802.11b W ireless P rint Server for p rinting with Windo ws. Once the print s erver is co nfigured, you can set up the network port for wir eless printi ng on other compu t ers i n your netw ork.
12 Preparing to Install Configuring the p rint ser ver is the process of setting it up to work with your network. Thi s proces s begins i mmediatel y after you instal l the soft ware, so it’ s imp ortant to make s ure your print ser ver and pr inter are s et up befo re you start installing.
13 Checking Your Netwo rk Befor e you begin the ins tallation process, do the follo wing: ■ F ollow the instruc t ions starting on page 9 to set up the print ser ver , connect it to your prin ter , and tes t the connection.
14 Installing the EpsonNet Wireless Utilities Before you i nstall the utilit ies, ma ke sure you c heck your network se ttings, as described on pa ge 13.
15 4. Click Ne x t . Y ou see th e licen se agr eement . 5. Read the license agreement, and c lick Ye s . 6. F ollo w the instruc t ions on the scre en and click Ne x t . Y ou see this window: 7. Check XA dmin32 if you want to install it. Then see the XAdmin32 on- scr een help fo r configurat ion instruct ions.
16 Configuring the P r int Server After the softwar e is ins talled, you ’ re ready to establish a connection to the print ser ver a nd configure it f or your wi reless network.
17 Y ou see the f ollowing: If yo u see the mess age Wirele ss Communic ation Failed , click OK, then click CONFI GURE agai n. If you c ontinue to see this messag e, m ove th e print serve r clos er to your c omput er an d access point, if you have one .

19 8. Make any other changes you want and click OK . F or example, you might want to change the Server N am e to something that is easy to remember , or enter a password to limit access to the Configuration screen. 9. Continue with the instr uctions in the next section to compl ete the configuration and installation.

21 Setting Up Additi onal Computers After you confi gure the print ser ver , you n eed to set up a net work por t on all the computers that wil l print over the wireless network. F irs t, do the following : 1. M ake sure y ou have i nstalled the printer dr iver and uti lity softwar e.
22 Setting Up a Network Port on Windows XP o r 2000 The process of se tting up a netw ork port is s i milar on Windo ws XP and Windows 2000. Alth ough t his secti on shows Windows XP , you ’ll se e simil ar screens in Windows 2000. Make sure yo u are logged in to the computer as an administrator .
23 5. Click Ne x t . Y ou see a window l ike the fo llowing: 6. In the Printer Name or I P Address box, enter the print ser ver’ s name or IP address and cli ck N ext . 7. F ollow the instruc tions on the screen to complete the wizar d. 8. Click Cl ose to close the Printer P orts window , the n click Apply on the P roper ties window .
24 Setting Up a Network Port on Windows Me, 98, or 95 Befor e you begin, run W P-Admin and note the IP addres s of your print ser ver . Make sure the printe r drive r is insta lled, and the wire less adap ter (or network adapter) is configur ed and working correctly .
25 4. Righ t-click yo ur printer icon, and the n click Properties . Y ou see the P roperties window . Click the Detail s tab to display a window like the following : 5. Click Add Port o n the Details tab. Y ou see the Add P ort window: 6. Make sur e Ne two rk is selected, then click Browse .
26 Y ou see the Browse for Printer win dow: . 7. Click the + next to Entire Network , then c lick the + next to Epson_lpr and sele ct your print e r . (M ake sur e the IP addres s matches y our pr int ser ver ’ s IP address.) 8. Click OK , then click OK again.
27 Setting Up a Network Port on Windows NT 4.0 Ma ke sure you have M i cros oft T CP/IP P rinting ins talled on the computer before you begin. Run WP-Ad min and no te the I P addr ess and se r ver n ame of your print ser ver .
28 6. Click Cl ose to close t he P rinter P orts win dow . 7. Click OK to close the P roper ties wi ndow . 8. Righ t-click yo ur printer icon in t he P rinters w indow an d click Properties . 9. T o test the connection, sel ect the General tab and click Print Test Pa ge .

32 If Your Maci ntosh Has a Non- AirPort Wireles s Adapter ■ M ake sur e your M acintosh c omputer ’ s wir eless mode is set corr ectly . Set it to Infrastructure if you are connecting through an acc e ss point, or 802.11b Ad Hoc if you are connecting without an access point.
33 Installing the EpsonN et Wireless Print Server 1. Insert the prin ter CD-R OM in your drive. 2. D o uble -click the Utility Inst aller icon . You may s ee a message that you have an older vers ion of the Java Runti me Environment on yo ur Macintosh.

35 If you see the m essage Wirele ss Communica tion Failed, clic k OK, then cl ick CONFIGU RE again. If yo u continue to see this mess age, move t he pr int se rver cl oser to yo ur com pute r and access point, if y ou have one. Also , move it away from large metal o bjects and de vices such as cordless phones or m icrow ave ovens .

37 Setting Up Additi onal Macintosh Computers Once the print ser ver is co nfigured on your wirele ss netwo rk, you ca n install the driver and selec t the printer on eac h Macintosh. Then make sure all your comp uters are se t up for yo ur wirele ss networ k.
38 If Your Maci ntosh Has a Non- AirPort Wireles s Adapter ■ M ake sur e your M acintosh c omputer ’ s wir eless mode is set corr ectly . Set it to Infrastructure if you are connecting through an acc e ss point, or 802.11b Ad Hoc if you are connecting without an access point.
39 Solving Wireless Printing Problems This chapter give s you inf ormation on solving pr oblems wi th print server setup and wireless pr inting. If you nee d to clean or align the print h ead, follow the instructions in Printer Bas i cs to run the appropriate u tilities.
40 Problem s and Solu tions Here are some troubleshooting t ips if you are having trouble setting up your print server or printi ng ov e r your w i reless networ k. When you start WP-Admin, you see a message t hat Javaw.exe wa s not found. Y ou must have t he J ava Runtime Env ironment instal led on your co mputer to run WP-Admin.
41 ■ Ho l d down the test button on the back of the print ser ver for at least f ive seconds to reset the pri nt server to its factor y defaults. The print s erver’ s green and yello w lights come on briefly when it resets. If you’ve already co nfigured the print server, yo u need to run WP- Admi n aga in to re confi gur e it.
42 ■ If you ’ ve set the Boot Method in WP-Admin t o AUTO or DHCP and unplugged the pri nt serve r , DHCP may have assigned anoth er IP address to the print s erver . T o che ck the IP address, press the te st button on the print se rver f or one second to print a status sheet .
43 ■ Make sure you ’ re connec ting to the correct pri nt ser ver . Chec k the MAC address on the back of the print server agai nst the MAC ad dress that appears in the WP-Admi n Wire less Server S earch windo w . ■ Check the printe r ’ s li ghts to see if there is a problem with the pri nter .
44 You wa nt to use a password on your AirPor t network. Because AirP ort uses p asswords that do not follow the standard for WEP encr yption, you need to change your network pas sword to a hexadecimal value.
45 6. T o use the printer in computer-to-c omputer mode, do the follo wing: ■ Cr eate a c omputer -to-com puter net work. ■ When prompted, enter as your password the hexadecimal value you entered in the 64B it Key 1 box on the W ireless Server Configuratio n screen.
46 Uninst alling the Soft ware Y ou may need to uninstal l and then reinstall the softwar e for your printer . F or example, this might be necessary if you upg rade your computer operating sys tem. Windows 1. Click Start > Settin gs > Control Panel (for Windows XP , click Star t > Control Pa nel ).

49 Appendix A: Configuration Settings The W i reless S er ver Config uration screen includes both fi e lds that display information and fields that al low y ou to modify print server settings.
50 Firmware R evision Indicates the version of the software embed ded in the pr int ser ver . Th is field cannot be changed. IP Address Ad dress use d to identify a node on a netw ork support ing the T CP/IP proto col. The format f or IP (Inter net P rotoco l) addresses is a set of f our bytes or se gments, sepa rated by pe riods.
51 Subnet Mask Set the subnet mask of your print ser ver to the correct setting for your network. This s etting will be 255.255.25 5.0 for mo st networks in the home or smal l offic e. Boot Method M eth od the print ser ver uses to obtain an IP address.
52 Data Rate Indicates the throughput spe ed in Mbps of th e wireless Ethernet connect ion (1, 2, 5.5, o r 11). The print server wi ll automatically negotiate to the highest possib le rate .
53 WEP Key Disables o r enables WEP (Wired Equi valent Privacy), wh ich provides a level of security for your network. T o co mmunicate, all node s on your network must be WEP-enabled and must u se the same WEP key . See the documentatio n for your wirel ess adapter or access po int for more information abo ut WEP .
