- 1 - W elcome to CoPilot! Imagine… a CoPilot at your side that al wa ys knows wher e y ou are, where y ou’ re g oing, and exactly how to get ther e. Now confi dentl y driv e anywher e while CoPilot, using the latest, most accurate GPS technology , shows you all the cor r ect turns to tak e to r each your destination.
- 2 - Getting Star ted This User Guide includes complete instructions for installing y our CoPilot software and using CoPilot on y our phone to guide y ou to y our destination or to plan trips.
- 3 - Installing CoPilot Installing Fr om a Quickstar t Installation Memor y Card: 1. Set up your phone and charge the battery following the instructions in your phone’ s manual. 2. Y ou must set the cor r ect date and GMT time on your phone f or optimal GPS functionality .
- 4 - c. On a desktop/laptop go to the Internet site http://activate.alk. com and enter the information. Y ou will be given an activation code. d. Enter the activation code into the phone when pr ompted and select Next . e. Once complete , you will see the message ‘ licence activated successfully ’.
- 5 - Har dw ar e Setup W ARNING: Y our GPS receiv er is temperatur e-sensitive. Nev er lea v e y our mobile phone or GPS receiv er in a closed v ehicle that exceeds 140 o F.
- 6 - Map Do wnload to Y our Smar tphone NO TE: If your CoPilot pr oduct came with a Quickstart installation memor y card, you don’ t need to download map data (it’ s already on your Quickstart card). Y ou can skip to Using CoPilot for Guidance , p .
- 7 - Selecting a Data Ar ea After you specify a location wher e the data will be stor ed, you will be pr ompted to select a region on the ma p to download. CoPilot gives y ou a choice of four wa ys to select a data region, described on p . 7-9 below .
- 8 - 1. Click the Map Ar ea icon in the Data Download Wizar d. Map Ar ea This method of selecting data allows y ou to choose an ar ea of data by dra wing a bo x on the Data Download Wizar d’ s map screen. In the Wizard, you enter a city name near which y ou w ould lik e to select data, then click Next .
- 9 - 1. Click the T rip icon in the Data Download Wizar d. T rip This method of selecting data is by far the most customisable method. It allows y ou to run a trip and select str eet-lev el data specifi c to that trip , thereb y a v oiding unneeded data and sa ving valuable memory space .
- 10 - 6. Y ou will r eturn to the Data Selection menu wher e y ou can select another data area if y ou lik e, using any method. When you fi nish selecting data ar eas, click Do wnload . T rip itineraries that wer e cr eated using the Tr i p download method will be transferr ed along with ma p data (see p .
POI Do wnload Options When you do wnload a data r egion fr om your desktop PC, you get all r oads within that region. Also included are r egional points of inter est (POI) such as gas stations, hotels, r estaurants, visitor attractions, etc. CoPilot now lets y ou contr ol the number and types of POI that get downloaded along with map data.
- 12 - Impor ting Custom Places CoPilot’ s Custom Place Impor t Wizard enables y ou to import addresses fr om your Outlook Contacts database, an Excel fi le, or text fi le. (If you are using another type of database or contact manager , you can export your contacts/ locations to an Excel or text fi le befor e importing them into CoPilot.
- 13 - Editing Custom Places After custom places ha v e been added to the database, they can be edited at any time. Select Manag e Custom Places fr om the T ools men u, then highlight the custom place you wish to edit, click Edit , and mak e your changes.
- 14 - Using CoPilot for Guidance In CoPilot’ s Guidance Mode on your mobile phone, you will r eceive turn- by-turn r oute guidance information as y ou tra vel. For y our safety , the Safety Vie w screen will hide ma ps when y our speed exceeds 16 k.
- 15 - Step 2 Step 3 Step 3a Step 3b Step 3c Step 4 2. In the Address scr een, enter a Street Name with or without a House Number , and a City . Scr oll down to enter a Countr y or P ostal Code — pr ess left or right on the scr oll k ey to scr oll do wn or up the pick list of countries — then select Done to continue.
- 16 - Stop Menu Options In the Going T o screen, press Options to access options that include adding, deleting, moving, editing, and optimising your stops. T o add another destination, choose Add Stop fr om the menu. (Another wa y to do this would be to simply highlight <Add a Stop> in the Going T o list and pr ess the scr oll k ey .
- 17 - Entering Y our Home Addr ess T o program y our home addr ess f or quick trip entr y , select Home in the Select Stop screen and enter your home ad dr ess as you w ould a new ad dress (p .
- 18 - CoPilot automatically places e very stop you enter on a list of fa v ourite places for futur e quick trip entr y . T o enter one of these fa v ourites as a stop , select Fa v ourites in the Select Stop screen. In the next screen, choose one of the places on the scr ollable list, then press Select .
- 19 - Finding Points of Inter est CoPilot enables you to sear ch f or points of inter est (POI) such as gas stations, hotels, r estaurants, visitor attractions, etc. within the region for which map data was downloaded fr om y our desktop/la ptop computer .
- 20 - Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 1. Select Pick fr om Map in the Select Stop screen. 2. CoPilot will pr ompt you to enter a location on the map wher e y ou can start searching for the place y ou ha v e in mind. Highlight one of the options, press Select , and enter any necessar y information.
- 21 - Star t Driving! Once you ha ve enter ed at least one stop in the Select Stop screen, you’ re r eady to start driving with CoPilot! Y ou’ll r eceive turn-b y-turn directions and ma ps to guide y ou safely to y our destination.
- 22 - Itinerar y View Press Options > Vie w to get to the trip Itinerar y . The Itinerar y is a scr ollable set of driving directions f or the curr ent trip . Individual roads on your Itinerary can be a voided using the Options men u in this scr een — highlight the r oad to a v oid and select Options > Actions > Av oid Road .
- 23 - Menu Options on the Road Fr om any guidance scr een, you can zoom y our map vie w in and out, edit your trip , calculate a detour , sav e y our location as a fa v ourite, and more. Press Options and select an y of the f ollowing options: Zoom In/Out In the map screen, zooms your vie w in/out.
- 24 - Sa ving a Curr ent Location as a F a v ourite A v oiding Roads T o a void an individual r oad and ha ve CoPilot calculate another r oute ar ound that r oad, you m ust be in the Itinerar y scr een.
- 25 - Gener al Options GPS Select GPS in the Settings screen. The GPS screen pr o vides tools for setting up and viewing y our Smartphone’ s GPS functionality . Select Options > T urn On Bluetooth to turn your phone’ s Bluetooth connection on fr om within CoPilot.
- 26 - Guidance Select Options > Settings > Guidance . The Guidance screen lets y ou indicate ho w far ahead of your next turn y ou want to be when you get a “Next turn” aler t. Four differ ent settings can be toggled on or off (scr oll down to see the Just Ahead option).
- 27 - License Select Options > Settings > License . This option displa ys y our CoPilot licence information. Press Options > Activate/ Upgrade in this screen to activate a ne w licence, or Options > Deactivate to deactivate CoPilot if you need to install the application on another phone.
- 28 - CoPilot Modes CoPilot has three modes of operation on y our Smartphone . T o switch modes, press Options > Mode in the Going T o screen or an y guidance screen. Guidance Mode In Guidance Mode, you enter one or more destinations, then press Drive to start driving and receiv e guidance.
- 29 - T rip Planning On Y our Smar tphone Y ou can use CoPilot on your Smartphone for trip planning whether or not the GPS receiv er is connected and r eceiving data. In Planning Mode you can run a trip e v en when y ou’ re not in your car . Y ou’ll get driving directions and ma ps to use as a r efer ence befor e y our trip begins.
- 30 - T rip Planning On Y our Desktop Y ou can use CoPilot’ s desktop functions to map out r outes and print maps and driving dir ections befor e getting on the r oad. Desktop trip planning is an additional featur e of CoPilot that is in no wa y connected to using your Smartphone for r oute guidance.
- 31 - Sa v e T rip Sa v e T rip button or Save T rip / Save T r ip As ... in the File menu. Open T rip Open T rip button or Open Tr i p in the File menu. Print Print button or Print... in the File menu. Help Help button or Help Contents and Search in the Help menu.
- 32 - Zoom In Zoom In button or Zoom In in the Map menu. Each time you click this button, your vie w will be zoomed in by one increment. The zoom lev el is shown in the title bar of the map window . Zoom Out Zoom Out button or Zoom Out in the Map menu.
- 33 - Zoom T o Region Zoom to Region button or Zoom Region in the Map menu. This function allows you to zoom y our ma p view to a specifi c ar ea. Choices in the sub-menu will depend on which CoPilot data region(s) w er e pur chased. Refr esh Map Refresh Ma p button or Refresh Map in the Map menu.
- 34 - Landmark Repor ting Select Landmark Repor ting fr om the dr op-down T rip menu. In this window y ou can contr ol how many landmarks CoPilot points out when generating driving directions. Help Menu Use the dr op-down Help menu to access CoPilot Help for assistance with all aspects of the software and to quickly access ALK’ s web site.
- 35 - Click the P oints of Inter est tab. Enter a City-Countr y or P ostal Code in which y ou would lik e to search, a radius within which to sear ch, and (optionally) choose a category and type fr om the dr op-down menu. Click the binoculars to start the sear ch.
- 36 - Click the Options button in the T rip Planner window to access CoPilot r outing options. Auto and Quick est ar e the default settings, pr oviding the quick est r outing for automobiles based on practical considerations such as r oad quality , terrain, and urban/rural classifi cations.
- 37 - CoPilot Liv e Communications CoPilot Live allo ws y ou to maintain two-wa y communication with drivers who are using CoPilot and to actuall y see wher e they ar e curr entl y located.
- 38 - Y our Live connection status is shown by the r ound icon at the bottom right of the black information bar : • Green — Good. • Y ello w — OK. Usually seen when fi rst connecting or in poor GPRS cov erage. • Red — No connection. Check your GPRS netw ork co verage and Live settings.
- 39 - Using T raffi c In Guidance Mode, press Options > T raffi c . Options in this menu are: • Check Route: Select Check Route to manually check f or traffi c incidents along your cur r ent r oute. • Find T raffi c: Select Find T raffi c to sear ch for traffi c incidents ar ound any location.
- 40 - Cr ea ting/Using Y our Own V oice Y ou can create your o wn v oice or load voices that other CoPilot users ha v e cr eated and posted online. T o do this, create a folder with any name y ou want and cop y sound fi les with the exact names of the CoPilot sound fi les.
- 41 - CoPilot T echnical Suppor t After registering y our softwar e (see p .42), you’ re entitled to technical support and discounts on new versions of CoPilot. Check out ALK’ s web site f or technical support documentation and posted answers to common questions.
- 42 - Using Help Files CoPilot pr ovides extensiv e Help Files, available on y our desktop/laptop and your Smartphone, to guide you thr ough the pr ogram as you use it. T o access Help on your Smartphone , once the CoPilot application is launched, press Options > Help .
