- 3 - Uninstalling a Pr e vious V ersion If you ha ve been using an earlier version of P ock et CoPilot, you must uninstall the application and its data befor e installing CoPilot.

- 5 - Adding a Da ta Region If you ha ve purchased an additional data r egion after your initial purchase of CoPilot, you will need to modify the original (“Base”) installation and activate the new r egion. IMPOR T ANT: Y ou can only use your Expansion Pr oduct K ey AFTER you ha ve installed CoPilot with a Base Product K ey .
- 6 - Softw are Activ ation NO TE: CoPilot won’t open on y our P ocket PC unless map data has pre viously been downloaded fr om CoPilot on the desktop . T o launch CoPilot, first turn on your Pock et PC , attach the GPS receiv er , and insert your QuickStart card (if provided).
- 7 - Data Do wnload to Y our Pock et PC T o use CoPilot on your P ocket PC, you first need to download map data fr om your desktop or laptop computer to y our Pocket de vice. Y ou select the data to download fr om one or more r egions (“data areas”) that y ou specify in the CoPilot application on your desktop .
- 8 - Data Do wnload Step 2: Choose a Data Selection Method After you specify a location wher e the data will be stored, you will be pr ompted to select a region on the map to do wnload. CoPilot allows you to download data using one of the three methods described below .
- 9 - Data Do wnload Step 3: Select Y our Data Use any of the thr ee methods cov ered on the follo wing pages ( City Radius , Map Area , or Tr i p ) to select one or more regions and then do wnload your data.
- 10 - Map Ar ea Note: CoPilot’ s available memory calculations subtract 15 MB from the a vailable memory on your storage card (if y ou are using one) to account for support files. 4. Name the selection, then click Next . 2. Enter a City , Countr y or P ostal Code (address optional) within the area that y ou would like to do wnload.
- 11 - T rip 3. If you choose the Points of Interest tab, enter a City , Country or a postal code and click the Find button. Y ou can specify search parameters by selecting a POI Category and/or Ty p e (this will speed up the search). 3a. Highlight a selection, click Select , then Add Stop .
- 12 - Data Do wnload Step 4: Download the Data When you’ re ready to ex ecute a download, the Wizard will display a list of Availab le Area(s) for do wnload on the left side of the window . T o designate an area to include in the download, click on it and then click on the right arrow button to move it to the Data Included in This Download list.
- 13 - Impor ting Custom Places CoPilot’ s Custom Place Import Wizard enables you to import addr esses from your Outlook Contacts database, an Excel file , or text file . (If you are using another type of database or contact manager , you can export your contacts/ locations to an Excel or text file before importing them into CoPilot.
- 14 - Editing Custom Places in the Database After custom places ha ve been added to the database, they can be edited at any time. Select Manage Custom Places fr om the T ools menu, then highlight the custom place you wish to edit, click Edit , and make y our changes.
- 15 - Addr ess Entr y NO TE: There is no need to enter a starting point. CoPilot uses GPS positioning to determine your location automatically . Address entry is a step-by-step pr ocess in which you enter the country or postal code, city , and house number/street name in separate scr eens.
- 16 - Star t Driving! After entering one or more destinations, start driving and enjoy CoPilot’ s spoken instructions, continuously updated maps and ET A’ s, and automatic route recalculation capabilities. A text-only Driver Saf ety Screen will r eplace the Map Screen when your speed exceeds 16 km.
- 17 - Entering a Home Addr ess Entering a W ork Addr ess F a v ourites T ap a Fa vourite on the list to enter it as a destination. T o change which Fav ourite is assigned to the Home or W ork buttons, tap Menu > Options > Settings and tap Fa vourites (see Settings Menu , p.
- 18 - Contact Integr ation CoPilot allows you to link dir ectly to Pock et Outlook to retrie ve addr ess information. With just a few of quick ta ps of the stylus, you can enter a contact’ s home and/or work addr ess as your destination. 1. T ap the Contact button in the Select Stop screen.
- 19 - Finding Points of Inter est Map Pr e view of a POI: T o previe w a POI on the map befor e you decide to enter it as a destination, highlight it on the match list and tap Map . In the map screen, a sliding bar lets you zoom the vie w in and out.
- 20 - Intersection T o enter the intersection of two r oads, tap the Intersection button in the Select Stop screen. Intersections are enter ed just like ad dresses (see p . 15-16), except that instead of a house number you enter a “First Street” and “Second Street”.
- 21 - Sa v ed T rip Nearb y Places Sear ch Closing CoPilot T o exit the CoPilot application on your P ocket PC, select Menu > Quit . Latitude/Longitude Ta p More... then tap Sav ed T rip in the Select Stop screen to enter a trip that was built on your desktop and transferr ed to your P ocket PC.
- 22 - Itiner ary Screen Driv er Safety/Map/Itiner ary Screens NO TE: It is not safe to attempt to alter settings on your Pock et PC while you are driving. Either ha ve a passenger mak e changes, or pull over to a saf e area. Ta p Menu > View to select how y ou want the guidance screen to display .
- 23 - Map Modes CoPilot gives y ou a choice of sev eral differ ent displa y modes for the Map Scr een: 3D P erspective CoPilot’ s two-dimensional default displa y mode can be changed to a three-dimensional perspective based off an isometric camera angle.
- 24 - T rip Editing and W a ypoints T o get to the Going T o screen from the guidance screens at an y time , tap Menu > T rip > Edit . From here y ou can edit the current trip, add additional stops, or start a new trip.
- 25 - Detour Fea ture CoPilot’ s Detour Featur e allows you to pr eview an alternate route bef ore deciding whether or not to take it. Perfect for situations in which traffic has suddenly slow ed ahead of you, the Detour Feature will generate an alternate route and tell y ou exactly how much distance the new r oute will add to your trip .
- 26 - Settings Menu Guidance In the Guidance tab, the settings under Speak T urn W arning At determine how often and where CoPilot will giv e you next turn inf orma- tion out loud.
- 27 - Fa vourites T ap the F a vourites tab to open y our List of Fa vourite Addresses . T o change the assignment of your work or home address, highlight your choice on the list and then tap either W ork or Home . T o edit an address, highlight it and tap Edit .

- 30 - Refer ence: Scr eens & T oolbars in Guidance Mode on Y our Pock et PC The following is a summary guide to the screens and toolbars you will see on y our Pock et PC as you operate CoPilot in Guidance Mode.
- 31 - Select Stop Screen No GPS Signal When you see this scr een it means that CoPilot is not receiving data fr om the GPS unit. 1) Check that all your connections ha ve been made correctl y , and that all wires are secure. 2) Make sur e your receiver is plugged into your v ehicle's pow er source.
- 32 - Map Scr een Itinerar y Screen The Itinerary provides turn-by-turn driving dir ections. In this screen you can highlight a road to a void and CoPilot will generate a detour around that r oad (see Selective Routing , p. 25). T rip Buttons Distance between turns .
- 33 - T rip Planning on Y our Pock et PC Y ou can use CoPilot on your Pock et PC for trip planning whether or not the GPS receiv er is connected and receiving data. Planning Mode allows y ou to run a trip on your P ocket PC even when y ou're not in your car .
- 34 - T rip Planning on Y our Desktop Y ou can use CoPilot's desktop functions to map out routes and print maps and driving directions bef ore getting on the r oad. Desktop trip planning is an additional featur e of CoPilot that is in no wa y connected to using your Pock et PC for r oute guidance.
- 35 - Print button or Print... in the File menu. T ak es you to the standar d Windows Print options for printing the active windo w that con- tains your map or driving dir ections. Activate the map or directions b y clicking on it or selecting it in the Windo w menu.
- 36 - Zoom In button or Zoom In in the Map menu. Each time you click this button, your view will be zoomed in by one increment. The zoom lev el is shown in the title bar of the map window . Zoom Out button or Zoom Out in the Map menu. Each time you click this button, your view will be zoomed out by one increment.
- 37 - Zoom to Region button or Zoom Region in the Map menu. This function allows you to zoom your map vie w to a specific area. Choices in the sub-menu will depend on which CoPilot data region(s) wer e purchased. Refresh Map button or Refresh Map in the Map menu.
- 38 - Select Landmark Repor ting from the drop-do wn T rip menu. Use the drop-do wn Help menu to access CoPilot Help for assistance with all aspects of the software and to quickly access ALK’ s web site. (For North Amer ica only) In this menu you will also find helpful tra vel links and a link to the ALK data corrections e-mail address.
- 39 - T rip Planner Windo w (Contacts) Driving Directions and Ma p (Split Screen) Enter a person’ s first or last name and hit <Enter>. CoPilot will search y our Contacts database for matches.
- 40 - Routing Options T rip Summar y Click the Options button in the T rip Planner window to access CoPilot routing options. Auto and Quickest is the default setting, and provides the quickest r outing for automobiles based on practical considerations such as road quality , terrain, and urban/ rural classifications.
- 41 - CoPilot Liv e Communications CoPilot Live allows y ou to maintain two-way comm unication with drivers who are using CoPilot and to actually see wher e they are curr ently located. Y ou can do this using a computer with CoPilot installed or from our CoPilot Liv e web page.
- 42 - Live Mode - Automatic V ehicle Location (A VL) Live Mode - Send/Receiv e Messages T o send a message to the driver , click the Send Message button on the toolbar or right click on the vehicle and select Send Messa ge fr om the pop-up window . Click your cursor in the space just below the Standar d Response Buttons , and begin typing.
- 43 - Live Mode - Send T rip Itinerary Updates T o send a T rip Itinerary Update to the driver , click the New T rip button on the toolbar and create a trip itinerary in the T rip Planner window just as y ou would in Planning Mode (see p.
- 44 - P ocket PC Setup for Liv e W eb T racking If you w ould lik e access to CoPilot’ s Live Netw ork on the W eb so that your friends, family , and co-workers can message and track y ou from anywher e in the world, you’ll need to set up y our P ocket PC f or web tracking.
- 45 - Driving with Live - Receiv e T rip Itinerar y Updates When you ar e the driver and a T rip Itinerary Update is sent to you, CoPilot Live displa ys it on top of all other windows. If you ha ve CoPilot Live's text-to-speech engine installed, you will hear the itinerary updates spoken out loud.
- 46 - About GPS T echnology The Global Positioning System (GPS), dev eloped by the U .S. Department of Defense, is a constellation of 24 satellites that orbit the Ear th twice daily . Each satellite contains an atomic clock that is accurate to the nanosecond, and constantly emitting radio wa ves toward Earth.
