1 Getting Started 17 Unpac king the Fir eP or t 1394 In addition to this man ual, y ou should fi nd the follo wing items inside the FireP ort 1394’ s box: • The FirePort 1394 • F our brack et stands , each with raised n ubs on one side . T hese ser ve as “feet” for your FST driv e, for the sake of traction an d air circu lation.
1 Getting Started 18 Connecting/Disconnecting the Fir eP or t 1394 The first thing to do is attach th e four brac ket stands to the FST driv e caddy , o ne to each corn er , as illustrated below: These raise the FST drive off the table or desk slightly , which will help keep air circulating around the drive and prev ent ov erheating during use.
Operations 2 19 Routine connections Once you hav e ev er ything working, these are the ste ps to o bser v e when connectin g an FST driv e to the FireP ort 1394: 1. Make sure the pow er switc h on the FireP or t 1394 is set to OFF . 2. Connect the FST drive to the FireP or t 1394.
1 Getting Started 20 Installing FST/Connect The brain behind the FireP ort 1394’ s “brawn” is FST/Connect. This is a software prog ram developed by Alesis , an d you will find it on the CD-ROM that w as in the box with the FireP o rt 1394. Installing FST/Connect is simple .
2 Operations 21 The FST/Connect Main W i ndow The main window of FST/Connec t has four major subdi visions , eac h of which c ontains betw een tw o and nine functions .
2 Operations 22 T o get the FSP reading fo r recording time available at 96 kHz, clic k anywhere in the window to the righ t of the “ At” bo x and select the number 96 from the menu. If your 48k song has 16 or 24 tracks , the number in the “F o r” box will c hange automatically to 12.
Operations 2 23 The Song windo w As stated earlier, eac h Project can ho ld up to 99 son gs if you’ re using file system 1.10. The So ng wi ndow is the one that allo ws you to choose the current Song within the Proje ct.
2 Operations 24 The T r ansf er window Occupying ov er half of the main win dow , the T ran sfer window sports a majority of the features fou nd in FST/Connect. It is here you will select whic h tracks to send which wa y , decide where they will wind up , an d deter mine what their for mat will be when they get there .
Operations 2 25 T o switch betw een the tw o tabs , clic k on one or the othe r with the cursor, or use the Left and Right cursor keys . Y ou’ll notice th at as the tabs change, the button below the Preview box will c hange automatically from Export to Impor t or vice versa.
2 Operations 26 If you ha v e a single track se lected, y ou can listen to it through y our computer’ s sound card. It doesn’ t matter wh ether the file is on th e FST dri ve or on you r PC’ s hard driv e; if the f ile sho ws up in the T rack l ist, it can be pre view ed.

Operations 2 29 Essentials of Exporting and Importing There are still some ver y impor tant things to cov er regarding expor ting and imp or ting . They are mostly related to the differences in the ways files are handled by PC and Macintosh computers .
2 Operations 30 Importing SD2 files fr om a Macintosh application Once y ou are done ed iting the audio f ile on the Maci ntosh, here is what to do in order to get the resultant file back into the PC: 1. Inside the Mac intosh, drop the file onto the MacBinary II+ icon.
Operations 2 31 Other notes about importing Bringing files from a PC into an FST driv e is similar in some wa ys to copying trac ks betw een songs on an HD24. If the segment y ou are pasting fits within the destinat ion song, then when the trac k is pasted the song le ngth does not change .

The first thing to know is that y ou can jump f rom one windo w to the next by using the T ab ke y .
Applications 3 35 Selecting cer tain tr ac ks f or impor t/expor t When you’ re working in the T rac k window , you don ’ t hav e to select only tracks or files that are all in a ro w . If desired, you can “leapfrog” o v er trac ks whic h you do not want to import or export.
3 Applications 36 Star ting and r estarting FS T/Connect and Fir eP or t 1394 Y o u may start and restar t FST/Connect without tur ning off the power to the FireP or t 1394. But if you want to turn its power off you shou ld dismount the hard dri v e fi rst using the taskbar tool, as described on pag e 19, and then tur n o ff the FireP ort 1394.
