4 I-5. Safety Information In order to ensure the saf e operation of the device and its users, pleas e read and act in accordance with the fol lowing safety inst ructions. 1. The device is desi gned for indoor use only; do n ot place it outdoors. 2. Do not place th e device in or near hot/humid pl aces, such as a kitchen or bathroom.
5 II. Installation The EW -7438RPn has three different operati ng modes which you can ch oose depending on you r network requirements . Each mode is described belo w: Wi-Fi Extender The device connects wirelessly to your existing network and repeats the wireless signal.
6 2. The green power L ED will fla sh while the system is booting up. The device is ready when the green power LED displays on . 3. Use a Wi-Fi device (e.g. compute r, tablet, smartphon e) to search for a Wi- Fi network wit h the SSID “ Edi max. Setup ” and conn ect to it.
7 4. Op en a web browser and if you d o not aut omatically arrive at the “Get Started” screen shown below , enter the URL http:// edimax.setup and click “Get Started” to begin the setup process. If you cannot access http://edimax.setup , please make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address.
8 II-1. Wi -Fi Extender Mode 1. Pl ease read the on screen instructions ab out selecting a good location for your wireless extender and t hen click “NEX T” to cont inue. You can check your signal strength on t he next page. 2. Select you r Wi-Fi network from the l ist and ent er the security key/password.
9 Do not check “C onnect to a hidden network” unles s you wish to connect to a hidden SSID instead. 3. Please wait while the EW -7438RPn te sts the connecti on. If your Wi-Fi extender cannot obtain an IP address (below) from your existing router/access point then c lick the “Static IP” button to assign an IP address to th e exte nder.
10 5. Pl ease wait a moment until the extender is ready. 6. A final congratulations scr een will indicate that setup is com plete. The EW -7438RPn is working and r eady for use - the ambe r signal strengt h LED should display on or flash depending on your signal str ength .
11 7. Please close the browse r window. Y ou can now conn ect to the extender ’s new SSID on a wir eless device within range such as a c omputer, smartphone or tabl et. Do not conne ct to your route r’s SSID inst ead! The password for your Wi- Fi extender’s SSID is the same as for your router’s SSID.
12 II-2. Wi -Fi Adapter/Bri dge Mode 1. Select you r Wi-Fi network from the l ist and e nter the security key/password. If the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect to does not appear, try clicking “Refresh”. Do not check “C onnect to a hidden network” unles s you wish to connect to a hidden SSID instead.
13 If your Wi-Fi extender cannot obtain an IP address (below) from your existing router/access point then c lick the “Static IP” button to assign an IP address to th e exte nder. For more guidance please refer to VII-1. Configuring your IP address .
14 5. A fi nal congratulations screen will in dicate that setup is co mplete. Pl ease close the browser window. 6. The EW - 743 8RPn is working a nd ready for use as a wireless bridg e . Use an Ethernet cable to connect the EW- 7438RPn to the Ethe rnet po rt on your network device.
15 II-3. Wi -Fi Access Point Mode 1. Connect t he LAN port of your EW -7438RPn to the LAN port of y our existing router using an Ethernet cab le, and then click “Next ”. 2. Cli ck “Next” to continue. 3. Select “Obt ain an IP address automatical ly” or “Use the following IP address” for your EW -7438RPn.
16 4. Enter a name and pa ssword for your wireless netw ork, then click “Next ” to continue..
17 5. A summa ry of your configuration w ill be displayed, as shown belo w. Check that all of t he details are correct and then cli ck “ Apply ” to restart the EW -7438RPn.
18 7. A final congrat ulations screen will indicate that setup is complete. Please close the browser window. The EW -7438RPn is workin g and ready for use.
19 II-4. WPS Se tup The WPS button is a qu ick and easy method to establish a secure conn ection between your EW - 7438RPn and wireless rout er/access point .
20 2. W ithin two minutes , press the WPS but ton on the EW- 7438RPn for 2 – 5 seconds to activate WPS. The gree n WPS LED wil l flash to indicate tha t WPS is active. 3. The devices will establish a connection. The green WPS LED on the EW -7438RPn will di splay on for 5 minut es to indicate a succe ssful connection.
21 II-5. Reset to Fac tory Default Settings If you experience problems wit h your extender or if you want to change t he extender to a diffe rent operating mode, you can reset the device bac k to its factory settings. This resets all settings back to d efault.
22 III. Browser Based Configuration Interface After you have setup the EW -7438RP n as detail ed in II. Installation or th e included Quick Installation Guide , yo u can use the bro wser based configuration int erface to configure advanced sett ings. Please ensure that your computer is set to use a dynamic IP address.
23 3. You wil l arrive at the “ Sta tus and Information ” screen . Use the menu down the left side t o navigate..
24 III-2. Save Settings 1. After you make any chang es to the EW - 7438RPn’s set tings, please click “APPLY”. 2. Then, select “CONTI NUE” to save cha nges but not apply them y et , or select “APPLY” to r estart the EW - 7438RPn and bring th e changes into effect.
25 III-3. Main Menu The main menu di splays different opt ions depending on your device’s operating mode. Please refer to the f ollowing chapt ers for guidance on ea ch mode.

28 IV-2. iQ Setup You can run the set up wizard again to reconfigu re the basic settings of the device. Pl ease refer to II -1. Wi -Fi Extender Mode St ep 2 onwa rds for guidance. If you wish to change the operating mode, please reset the EW-7438RPn back to factory default sett ings.
29 IV-3 . WPS Settings Wi-Fi Protected Setup is a simple way to estab lish connections betw een WPS compati ble devices. When WPS is activated in the co rrect manner and at the cor rect time for two compatible devices, they wil l automatical ly connect.
30 IV-4. Wireless Advanced In “Wireless Advanced” yo u adjust the power out put and LED operation of t he EW-7438RP n. The subm enu also allows you to confi gure security, as well as various administra tive and manag ement functions. This product should work for a long time, and provide round-the-clock Wi-Fi service.
31 IV-4-1. WLAN 2.4GHz Sec urity Broadcast SSID Enable or disable ESSID broadca st. When enabled, the ESSID wil l be visible to clients as an available Wi -Fi network. When di sabled, the ESSID will not be visi ble as an avail able Wi-Fi network to clients – clients must manually enter the ESSID i n order to connect.

Configuration Too ls The “Configurati on Tools” menu allows you to backup the EW - 7438RPn’s settings, restore the setting s to a previous version or restore the EW - 7438RPn back to its factory defa ult state. You can also upgrade t he firmware, rebo ot the device and exp ort the system log.
34 Upgrade Firmwar e You can upgrade the syste m firmware to a mo re recent version. You can download the latest f irmware from the Edimax website . After the upgrad e, the system will restart. Do not switch off or disconnect the device during a firmware upgrade, as this could damage the device.
35 Reboot In the event that the route r malfunctions or is not r esp onding , then it is recommended that you restart the d evice. Rebooting the EW-7438RPn will not affect the current configuration/settings of the device. Apply Click “Apply” to reboot th e device.
36 System Log You can export the system log to a sepa rate file if you require. Export system log Click to open a new wind ow and select a location to save th e log file.

49 VI -3. Basic Settings The “ Basic Setti ngs ” screen displays various sett ings for your wireless net work. Mode The EW- 7438RPn’s mode is displayed here. Band Displays the wireless sta ndard used for the EW -7438RPn . “2.4 GHz (B+G+N)” means that 802.
50 Multiple ESSID This page allows you to configu re the wireless settings for mult iple ESSID ’ s. No. Identification number of each additional ESSID. Enable Check the box to e nable or disable a n ESSID . SSID Enter the SSID (the name u sed to identi fy this wireless access poi nt) here.

52 VI -4. WPS Settings Wi-Fi Protected Set up is a simple way to establish connections betw een WPS compatible devices. When WPS is activated in the co rrect manner and at the cor rect time for two compatible devices, they wil l automatical ly connect.
53 Configuration Mode The configuration mode of the device’s WPS setting is displ ayed here. “Registrar” means the device acts as an access point for a wi reless client to connect t o and the wireless cli ent(s) will follow the device’s wireless s ettings.
54 VI -5. Wireless Advanced Using the “Wireless Advanced” menu, you can configure security, MAC fi ltering and various other settings. The settings on the “Wireless Advan ced” page sho wn below are for expe rienced users only. Please do not change any of the val ues on this page unless you ar e already familiar with these functions.
55 DTIM Period Set the DTIM period of wireless radio. T he default value is 3. Data Rate Set the wireless da ta transfer rate. T he default is set to aut o.
56 VI -5-1. Security The access point p rovides a variety of wireless se curity options (wireless d ata encryption). When data is encrypted, inf ormation transmitted wirelessly cannot be read by anyone who does not know the encrypt ion key. The “ Security ” screen displays security s ettings for your E W-7438RPn.
57 VI -5-1-1. Disable Encryption is disab led and no passwo rd/key is required to conne ct to the EW -7438RPn. Disabling wireless encryption is not recommended. When disabled, anybody within range can connect to your device’s SSID. Enable 802.1x Authentication Check the box to e nable the 802.

If you have a RADIUS authenticat ion server, you can authenticate the identity of every wi reless client against a user database. 60 VI -5-2. MAC Filte ring The MAC filtering feature all ows you to define a l ist of wireless devices permitted to connect to t his access point , identified by their unique MAC address. When this fea ture is enabled, d evices which a re not on the list of permitted MAC ad dresses cannot co nnect to the acces s point.

97 VII-1-3. How to Find Your Network Sec urity Key To find your netw ork security key, please follow the i nstructions approp riate for your operating system. If you are using Windows XP or earlier, please contact your ISP or router manufacturer to find your network security key.
98 4. You shoul d see the profile of yo ur Wi-Fi n etwork in the list. Rig ht click on your Wi- Fi netwo rk and then click on “P roperties”. 5. Click on the “Secur ity” tab, and then check the b ox labeled “Show characters”. This wil l show your network security key.

111 VII-3. Troub les hooting If you are experiencing problems with your wireless extender , please refer to this troubleshooti ng guide before cont acting your dealer of purchas e for help. Scenario Solution I can’t log onto the browser-based configuration interface.

113 VII-4. Glossary Default Gateway ( Wireless bridge ): Every non-ac cess point I P device needs to configure a defaul t gateway’s IP address. When the device sends out an IP packet, if the destina tion is not on the same netwo rk, the device has to s end the packet to its defa ult gateway, which will then send it out towards the destinati on.
114 A network mask is also a 32 -bit binar y pattern, and consist s of consecutive leading 1’s followe d by consecutive trail ing 0’s, such as 11111111.11111111.11111111. 00000000. Therefore sometimes a net work mask can also be described simpl y as “x” number of lea ding 1’s.
