4 DTS SYSTEM TEST 6. Index Switch. A small black momentary push button switch located below the TIMECODE HEAD OFFSET switches (behind the plate and under the LED s). I t is commonly called the “index switch”. This button can be used to i ncrement to the nex t track being play ed.
5 DTS SYSTEM TEST 13. Unblock the timec ode. Once the c i nema proce ssor automatically returns to a dig ital format, go into the theater and listen to the sound track. Verify good sound quality and lip sync. Also verify no extraneous noise during the quiet scenes.
6 DTS 70mm Fail-sa fe Test NOTE: I f using one DTS-6D unit, there is no fail-safe or fall-back available on this ty pe of system. If using two DTS-6D units, verify connections to the fail-safe board. See installation manual. There are no magnetic sound tracks on DTS 70m m prints .
7 DTS TEST DISCS Below is a list of all the test discs released by DTS. Some of these test discs are obsolete and should no longer be used. I n m ost cases, the discs are obsolet e due to software changes that made them incompat ible with curr ent DTS playe rs.
8 DTS EMPIRICAL TEST DI SC Te sts # 1 t hro ugh #35 will play automatically . For a specific test, wait f or the announcem ent, then select the des ired test number on the TI M ECODE HE AD OFF SE T rotary switch es (located behind the play er's front panel acces s cover).
9 DTS SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Movie not playing in DTS digital sound, CP (cinema process o r ) w on’t sw itch to DTS format. Is t h e SYSTEM light blinking on the DTS player? NO System is not ready to play . Ensure movie disc(s) are in the DTS player.
10 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING 1. (continued) . Movie not playing in DT S digital sound, CP (cinem a processor) won’t switch to DTS format . * Is CP in the correct sound format ? I n most cases, DTS will automatica lly pulse the CP. • I f re-starting after film break , some autom ation systems m ay switch the CP out of the dig ital format.
11 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 2. ( continued) DTS digital m ovie defaulting to optical (analog) and not stay ing in digital. • If the reader’s g reen LE D is solid and the DTS still defaults, look at the lights on CD-ROM drives themselv es. They should blink sporadically when their disc is being read.
12 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 6. Sound not in sync with pict ure. * Turn off the DTS player until the audience leav es. Get the DTS num bered leader. Thread it through DTS reader & projector. Put “00” at reader’s lens and find number at sound head.
13 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 12. Noise, distortion, and other sound anom alies. * Apparent in optical as well? Not a DTS player problem . • Turn off all am ps, one by one to localize the problem. If an am p hums or is noisy, replace it. • If us ing Kin tek KT-90 subw oofer amps, thes e are prone to hum because they are s elf-pow ered.
14 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 13. Channel output too low/high and won’t adjust. * Apparent in optical as well? Not a DTS player problem . Are all the amps on? * Apparent in DTS only, turn off the D T S player until there is tim e to troubleshoot. • Use DTS Setup Disc to verify DTS SPL adjustments.
15 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 17. Volume too loud / soft. If the ov erall volume is too loud/soft: Adjust fader pot on CP. Do not adjust DT S player trim pots behind front panel. If sound lev el not balanced between analog and digital, verify B-chain alignm ent.
16 SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTIN G 20. No Subwoofer. * Verify the subwoofer am p is powered on. * Use the DTS Setup disc to verify DTS subwoofer output. * On a CP65, verify the sub switch on the CAT441 is in AUTO .
17 DTS-6 /-6D UNIT TROUBLESHOOTING W hen making any repairs to the DTS player, be sure to update the TCR firmware (U14 on the D422 board). 1. DRIVE P ROBLEMS • Noisy operation • The drive m otors on in-service older DTS- 6D players are at the end of their useful life.
18 DTS-6/D TROUBLESHOOTI NG 7. WON’T BOOT / LOAD • Verify dri ve assignments and that each drive is spi nning. • Verify that th e ROM-DOS chip is programme d with the latest version firmware. NOTE: On DTS players with FUTURE DOMAIN SCSI board, the ROM-DOS RevE is located at U12 on the DTS D422 board.
19 Replaci ng CD-ROM Driv es We have used only two manufacturers of CD-ROM drives, Toshiba and TEAC. Do not substitute with any other manufacturer. Only drives approve d by DTS w ill work . Toshiba / Future Domain SCSI and the “ ROM-DOS” chip When replacing drives with ones made by Toshiba, be sure to use the current “ ROM-DOS” chip.

26 BLINKING TIMECODE READER LED The timecode reader LED should remain brig ht and not flash more than a few times a minute. Ex cessive flashing indicates a problem and should be fixed as soon as possible. The optics on the reader should be blown off with compressed air at least once a day , but never ad just the len s .
27 BLI NKING TI MECODE READER LED Film Instability, continued • Gently squee ze the edges of the film betwe en two finge rs as it enters the rea der, pull back slig htly a nd allow y our fing ers to ac t as shock absorbers. Repeat on the exit side of the rea der.
