8 INTRODUCTION Thank you for choosing the ESAM 5600 automa- tic coffee and cappuccino maker . We hope you enjoy using your new appliance. T ake a few minutes to read these instructions. This will avoid all risks and damage to the machi- ne. Symbols used in these instructions Important warnings are identified by these symbols.

10 Heating up IMPORT ANT MESSAGE (see section "Displayed messa- ges"). Please wait... FILL T ANK! Hot water BEFORE USE Controls after transport After removing the packaging, make sure the pro- duct is complete and undamaged and that all accessories are present.
11 NB! When using the appliance for the first time, you need to make 4/5 cups of coffee and 4/5 cappuccinos before it starts to give satisfactory results. TURNING THE APPLIANCE ON NB! Before turning the appliance on, make sure the main switch on the back of the appliance is in the I position (fig.
12 Setting the temperature T o modify the temperature (low, medium, high) of the water used to make the coffee, proceed as fol- lows: 1. Choose the "SETTINGS" section as described above; 2. Press the selection icons < or > until "COFFEE TEMPERA TURE" is displayed; 3.

Setting auto-start time Y ou can set the auto-start time in order to have the appliance ready at a certain time (for example in the morning) so you can make coffee immedia- tely .
14 Selecting the quantity of coffee in the cup The appliance is set by default to make a standard quantity of coffee. T o choose the quantity of cof- fee, press the selection icon (C10) until the "quan- tity" bar has filled as follows: The quantity bar fills up progressively each time you press the selection icon (C10).
15 NB! • While the machine is making coffee, delivery can be interrupted at any moment by pressing the lit cup icon. • At the end of delivery , to increase the quantity of coffee in the cup, just press (within 3 seconds) one of the coffee icons ( or ).
16 denser froth. Moving it towards CAPPUCCINO obtains a less dense froth. 2. Press the CAPPUCCINO icon (fig. 23). A cup is displayed and gradually fills as preparation progresses. (After a few seconds, frothed milk flows out of the milk spout into the cup below .
17 2. Press the icon corresponding to the function you want to programme until "PROGRAM QUANTITY Milk for ..." is displayed and the icon corresponding to the selected function flashes. 3. Release the icon. The appliance starts delive- ring milk.
18 • Empty the grounds container and clean tho- roughly to remove all residues left on the bot- tom. Important! When removing the drip tray , the grounds container must be emptied, even if it is not completely full. If this is not done, when you make the next cof- fees, the grounds container may fill up more than expected and clog the machine.
19 NB! If the infuser is difficult to insert, you must first adapt it to the right dimension by pressing it forcefully from the bottom and top as shown in the figure. 7. Once inserted, make sure the two red buttons have snapped out. 8. Replace the drip tray and grounds container .
20 Important! Danger of burns. Hot water containing acids flows out of the hot water spout. Avoid contact with splashes of water . 7. Press the selection icon corresponding to OK to start the descaling programme. 8. The message "DESCALING UNDERWA Y .
21 DISPOSAL Electrical appliances must not be disposed of as household waste. Appliances with this symbol are covered by European Directive 2002/96/EC. All unused electric and electronic appliances must be disposed of separately from household waste by taking them to the special centres provided by the State.

24 The coffee is delivered too quickly . • The coffee is ground too coarsely . • T urn the grinding adjust- ment knob one click anti- clockwise towards "1" while the coffee mill is in opera- tion (fig.
25 The milk contains bubbles or squirts out of the milk spout. • The milk is not cold enough or is not semi-skimmed. • The frothed milk regulator is incorrectly adjusted. • The milk container lid is dirty . • Y ou should ideally use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk at refrigerator tempe- rature (about 5°C).
