U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . Executive Summary Multi-switch Link Aggregation or MLAG is a feature that allows t wo Dell Network ing switches to act as a single switch, provid es m.
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 1 Introduction MLAGs provide an active-active split aggregation depl oyment across two switches acting as o ne.
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 2 Caveats for Enabling MLAG There are a few limitations in impleme nting MLAGs : Two identical s witch models are required to create MLAG peer s . This means an N2048 can only be peered with another N2048, a n N3024 with anot her N3024 , and so on .
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . Change any setti ngs mentioned below on both the MLA G peers when requir ed . E nable MLAG only after the above settings are conf igured on the two peer switches . It is also recommended f or MLAG to be t emporarily di sabled in order to make subsequ ent changes to the above settings.
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 3 Supported Topologies MLAGs topologies contain several options. T hey can be a single layer (only one pair of MLAG peer switches) or two layer s (two pair of MLAG peer switches) . Each MLAG doma in can have anywhere from 1 to 8 partner switc hes .
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 4 Single-Tier Example This example sho ws the configuration of the two ML AG peers with t wo MLAG partner s. The default spanning tree configurat ion is used a nd spanning tre e is disabled on the peer link .
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . Primary MLAG Pe er (N3048) Secondary MLAG Peer N3048) Description of commands switchport trunk native vlan 30 vpc 30 exit interface port-channel 40 s.
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . Note : Interfaces used to connect each peer to the par tner switch LAG do not need to match on each peer . For instance, in the exampl e above, one p artner LAG interf ace connects to 1/0/47 on the primary peer while the other inter face connects to 1/ 0/11 on the secondar y peer.

U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 5 Two -Tier Example Figure 5 shows a l ogical topol ogy for a 2-tier fully meshed ML AG, off ering full redundanc y across all four MLAG peers .
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . In a full mesh, a ll eight ports joined togeth er in the MLAG (fo ur blue cables) are in the same port c hannel to achieve maximu m redundanc y. To configure the 2- tier in a full mesh configu ration, f ollow the steps belo w: 1.
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . MLAG Peer B MLAG Peer C Description of commands interface gigabitethernet 1/0/1 channel-group 40 mode active description "MLAG-Partner-Link".

U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . Note : Interfaces used to connect each peer to the par tner switch LAG do not need to match on each peer . For instance, in the exampl e above, one p artner LAG interf ace connects to 1/0/47 on the primary peer while the other interface connects to 1/0/11 on the seco ndary peer.

U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . 6 Using MLAG with VLT or Cisco v PC MLAG can also be used in conjuction with similar technologies su ch as Dell Networking VLT or Cisco v PC (virtual port-chan nel), but only in a multi-lay er topolo gy .
U s i n g M L A G i n D e l l N e t w o r k s . In Figure 9 belo w, the first topo logy shows MLAG peers on one la yer and Dell VLT peer s on the second layer, with a full -mesh LAG . Th e second topol ogy shows MLAG peers on o ne layer and Cisco vPC (or Cisco VSS) on the second layer, also with a full -mesh LAG .
