28 Using the Keyboard and Mouse Keyboard Pairing Failed If your computer fails to recognize the k eyboard, follow these steps: 1 P ress the power button to turn the computer off, and then press the power button again to r estart the computer; wait about thr ee minutes for the operating system to load and the computer to initialize the drivers.

Using Multimedia 37 Using Multimedia Playing Media NOTICE: Do not press down on the optical drive when you open or close it. Keep the tray closed when you are not using the drive. Do not block the drive from opening fully . NOTICE: Do not move the compute r while playing media.
38 Using Multimedia T o r emove the disc from the drive: 1 P ress the eject button on the media button panel in front of the optical drive. The drive will rise and eject the disc. 2 Remove the disc. NOTICE: Do not manually push the drive down. 3 P u sh the eject button to retract the drive.
Using Multimedia 39 Adjusting the V olume NOTE: When the speakers are muted, y ou do not hear the media playing. In addition to using the media co ntrol buttons to adjust the volume, you can also adjust the volume in the following way : 1 Click Start → All P rograms → Accessories → Entertainment → V olume Control .

Using a Battery 55 Using a Battery Replacing the Battery CAUTION: Using an incompatible battery may increase the ri sk of fire or explosion. Replace the battery only with a compatible battery purcha sed from Dell. The battery is des igned to work wi th your Dell™ computer .
56 Using a Battery 3 Insert the battery straight down into the battery compartment with the battery access door in the open position. 4 Slide the battery in the direction of the #1 arrow until it snaps into place.
Using a Battery 57 5 Close the battery access door by pu shing it down with your finger . Removing the Battery 1 Ensure that the computer is turned off. 2 Slide the battery latch release on the bottom of the computer in the dir ection of the #1 arrow .
58 Using a Battery 3 Using your thumbs, slide the battery in the direction of the #2 arrow by inserting one thumb into the recess ne xt to the battery access door and th e other thumb into the indention surrounding the #2 arrow . 4 Lift the battery straight up and out of the computer .
Using a Battery 59 Battery operating time varies dep ending on operating conditions. NOTE: Battery operating time (the time the battery can hold a charge) decrea ses over time. De pending on how often the battery is used and the conditions under which it is used, y ou may need to purchas e a new battery during the life of your computer .
60 Using a Battery Microsoft Windows Power Meter The Microsoft W indows P ower Meter indicates the re maining battery charg e. T o check the P ower Meter , double-click the icon on the taskbar . If the computer is connected to an el ectrical outlet, a icon appears.
Using a Battery 61 Charging the Battery NOTE: When the computer is turned off, the AC adapter charges a completely discharged battery to 80 percent in about 90 minutes. Full battery charge time will be long er . Charge time is lo nger with the comp uter turned on.
62 Using a Battery Standby Mode Standby mode conserves power by turning off the display and the hard drive after a pr edetermined period of inactivity (a time-out). When the comp uter exits standby mode, it r eturns to the same operating state it was in before entering standby mode.

82 Using Cards ExpressCard Reader NOTE: PCMCIA cards will not work in the ExpressCard reader . The ExpressCar d slot has one connector that supports both 34-mm and 54-mm ExpressCards. Using Cards 83 T o insert a car d: 1 Hold the card with its orientation symbol pointing into the slot and the top side of the car d facing up. The latch may need to be in the "in" position before you insert the car d. 2 Slide the card into the slot until the car d is completely seated in its connector .

T roubleshooting 87 T roubleshooting Dell T echnical Update Service The Dell™ T echnical Update service provides proactive e-mail notification of softwar e and hardware updates for your computer . The service is fr ee an d can be customized for content, format, and how frequently you r eceive notifications.
88 T roubleshooting b P ress and hold the <Fn> key while powering the computer on. NOTE: If you see a message stating that no diagnostics utility partitio n has been found , run the Dell Diagnostics from the Drivers and Utilities disc.
T roubleshooting 89 Dell Diagnostics Main Menu 1 After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want. 2 If a problem is encountered during a test, a message a ppears with an error code and a description of the problem.

94 T roubleshooting S CAN THE COMPUTER FOR SPYWARE — If you are e xperiencing slow comp uter performance, you frequently receive pop-up advertisements, or you ar e having problems connect ing to the Internet, your computer might be infected with spyware.
T roubleshooting 95 G ENERAL FAILURE — The operating system is unable to carry out the command. The message is usually followed by specific information—for example, Printer out of paper . T ake the appropriate action. H ARD - DISK DRIVE CONFIGURATION ERROR — The computer cannot identify the drive type.
96 T roubleshooting M EMORY DOUBLE WORD LOGIC FAILURE AT ADDRESS , READ VALUE EXPECTING VALUE — A memory module may be faulty or improperly seated. Reinstall the me mory modules (see "Memory" on page 129) and, if necessary , replace them.
T roubleshooting 97 T IME - OF - DAY CLOCK STOPPED — The reserve battery that supports the system configuration settings may requir e replacing. See "Coin-Cell Battery" on page 134.

102 T roubleshooting • Searching – The Dell Mobile Broadband Card Utility has not yet located a Mobile Broadband network. If the searching state persists, ensu re that the signal str ength is adequate. • No service – The Dell Mobile Broadband Card Utility did not locate a Mobile Broadband network.

T roubleshooting 105 No sound from integrated speakers A DJUST THE W INDOWS VOLUME CONTROL — Double-click the speak er icon in the lower -right corner of your screen. Ensur e that the volume is turned up an d that the sound is not mu ted. Adjust the volume, bass, or treble controls to eliminate distortion.
