MAN 65 0067:F 3 MOUNTING SYSTEMS WITH ALUMI NUM TRIM There a re two methods for mounting th e display panel in to your dash. The f irst method is to cut an o pening in the dash the size of the inside lip an d “sandwich” the da sh between the bezel and the mounting plate.
MAN 65 0067:F 4 Method #1 Cut a re ctangular hole where you want th e dash mounte d that is 1-11/16 ” tall x 17” long. Next round the ends to match the bezel. The hole shou ld be 18-11/16” long in the center from end to end. Remove the six screws that secu re the mounting plate to the display panel.

MAN 65 0067:F 6 MESSAGE DI SPLAY Since the VFD 3 X systems use a shared message center fo r speed and tach messa ges both Switch 1 and 2 are used to cycle th rough the various messa ges. Use Switch 1 to select different me ssage screens (Milea ge, Performance , Tach Bar).
MAN 65 0067:F 7 CONTROL BOX MOUNTING Once the disp lay panel is in place, mount the control box within reac h of the ribbon cable on the displa y panel (approximately 3 f eet). Pick a mount ing location that will allow you access to wire all of t he inputs on the control box.

MAN 65 0067:F 9 POWER Connect the PO W ER terminal to a ccessory +12V power from the fuse panel or vehicle wiring harness. This termina l should have power when the k ey is on or in accesso ry position. In addition t o powering the display system , this is also where the voltmeter gau ge reads the vehicle electrical system voltage.
MAN 65 0067:F 10 SPD + This term inal is used to supply power to Dakota Digital speed sensor SEN-01-5 . This supplies 5V DC to the sensor and should not be hooked up to anything else.
MAN 65 0067:F 11 To enter DEMO mode, press and ho ld switch 2 while turning th e key on. The s ystem will light up and say DAKOTA DIGITAL o n the message readou t, release the switch and the system will stay in dem o mode until the power is cycled off and back on without the switch h eld.
MAN 65 0067:F 12 OIL + This term inal is used to supply power to Dakota Digital pres sure sensor SEN-03-8 . This supplies 5V DC to the sensor and should not be conne cted to anything else. Conn ect the red wire from the SEN-03-8 to this term inal. ***DO NOT us e this terminal to power any other devices; it is a low current +5V output .
MAN 65 0067:F 13 If your wiring harne ss already has a sin gle wire routed throu gh the vehicle for th e fuel sender, then it may be used. If usin g a wire from an existing harn ess, make sure that the wire does not ha ve power. The fuel send er gets power from t he control box only.
MAN 65 0067:F 14 4x4 (-) The 4x4 te rminal can be used on four wheel drive vehicles. Th e 4x4 input is act ivated by a ground signal from a switch on th e transfer case.
MAN 65 0067:F 15 DISPLAY RIBBON CABLE This is where the grey cable from the display system p lugs into the control box. To connect the ribbon cable from th e display system to the control box; • First open the two locking tabs on either side of the b lue RIBBON CABLE connector.
MAN 65 0067:F 16 Setting up the control box Below is a list of all of the setup me nus. You mu st have S W 1 wired to ente r setup; description s of each menu are below. Pay close a ttention to Setup Menus a nd settings as incorrec t settings will cause faul ty readings on the dis plays.
MAN 65 0067:F 17 SPEEDOMETER SETUP/CALIBRA TION There a re two main methods for ca librating the spee dometer, Auto Cal an d Adjust. Auto Cal requires th at you have one measu red mile marked ou t (1 km for metric).
MAN 65 0067:F 18 (Auto Cal continued) NOTES: You do not ha ve to drive at a constant speed nor do you have to avoid stopping during Auto Cal. When comple ted, you do no need to s top, you may, but you can also just press a nd release SW1 as y ou pass the 1 m ile mark.
MAN 65 0067:F 19 Speed Output ( O UTPUT ) If a speed s ignal is needed for an E CM or cruise control, t he SPD OUT termina l can be used. This terminal can supply a 20 00 ppm or 4000 ppm signal. • W hen “ OUTPUT ” is displayed, press and hold S W 1 until you get “ - ” • Release the switch.
MAN 65 0067:F 20 Display update setup ( UPDATE ) The display update rate can be adjusted so the reading on the tachometer doesn ’ t change so q uickly. This is a persona l preference and is just u sed to “slow” the reading by averaging. The value can be chan ged from slow, mid, and fast .
MAN 65 0067:F 21 WATER TEMP SETUP The water tem p setup allows you sele ct the units the tem perature is displayed in, Fahrenheit or Celsius. It also allows you to set a high temperat ure warning point that will cau se the display to f lash whenever the rea ding on the display is h igher than the set point.
MAN 65 0067:F 22 Temp se nsor test ( TEST ) Th is menu will allow you t o check the resista nce the control box is rea ding from the water temp senso r. This can be use d for a diagnostic tool if you are having troub les or feel that the reading is inco rrect.
MAN 65 0067:F 23 Oil pressur e sensor test ( TEST ) Th is menu will allow you t o check the voltage th e control box is rea ding from the pressu re sensor. This can be used for a diagnostic tool if you are ha ving troubles or fee l that the reading is incorrect.
MAN 65 0067:F 24 Fuel se nsor setup ( SENDER ) Th is menu is used to select the fuel level se nsor type. The t able, on previous pa ge, shows the s even options and re sistance ranges as well as the custom optio n.
MAN 65 0067:F 25 Exit fuel se tup ( DONE ) This will allow you to exit the fue l setup and go on to the ne xt setup menu. • W hen “ Set done ” is displayed, press and hold SW1 until you get “ .
MAN 65 0067:F 26 BUS INTERFACE MODULE SETUP The bus interfa ce modules ( BIM ) are a future produc t added to Dakota Digital instrument ation systems. The y allow you to add au xiliary gauge functions, suc h as fuel pressure, vac/boost, trans temp, etc.
MAN 65 0067:F 27 ODOMETER PRE SET MENU The control box will allow you to set the odometer m iles to match your cu rrent odometer reading, ONE time within the first 100 miles. Once the odometer has more than 100 miles, this menu opti on will no longer be displ ayed.
